CAUTION: To prevent possible Electrostatic Discharge damage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Do Not touch the connector pins or soldered components on the circuit. Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or a Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM) change. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the engine calibrator (PROM) and PCM should be checked first to see if they are the correct parts. If they are remove the PROM from the faulty PCM and install it in the new service PCM. THE SERVICE PCM WILL NOT CONTAIN A PROM. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 51 indicates the PROM is installed improperly or has malfunctioned. When DTC 51 is obtained, check the PROM installation for bent pins or pins not fully seated in the socket. If the PROM is installed correctly and DTC 51 still shows, replace the PROM. Important: When replacing the production PCM with a service PCM (controller), it is important to transfer the Broadcast code and production PCM number to the service PCM label. Please do not record on PCM cover. This will allow positive identification of PCM parts throughout the service life of the vehicle. CAUTION: To prevent internal PCM damage, the ignition must be “OFF” when disconnecting or reconnecting power to PCM (for example, battery cable, PCM pigtail, PCM fuse, jumper cables, etc.). REMOVE OR DISCONNECT 1. Negative battery cable. 2. Right side sound insulator. 3. Vacuum center. 4. Connectors to PCM. 5. PCM. 6. PROM access cover. 7. PROM from PCM. INSTALL OR CONNECT 1. PROM to PCM. 2. PROM access cover. 3. PCM. 4. Connectors to PCM. 5. Vacuum center. 6. Right side sound insulator. 7. Negative battery cable.

Do not connect battery trickle charger. Risk of Injurywhen performing diagnostic tests and repairs on components of the SRS system. Store both airbags and side airbags with opening surface pointing upward. Do not expose to temperatures above 100°C . Preliminary work: Diagnosis – Function Test. See: FT – Function Test Preparation for DTC Readout : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Review DTC Memory and Actual Values. Fuses OK. Battery voltage 11 – 14 V SRS MIL (A1e15) illuminates. Connect Hand-Held Tester (HHT) as per connection diagram and readout DTC memory. WARNING: Interrupt any electrical current from reaching the airbag unit. NOTE: As of 07/93, diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) can only be read out and erased using the Hand-Held Tester (HHT). Determine MB number of the SRS control module via HHT (See DTC Chart). The SRS control modules beginning with the number 000, the fault code 1 is valid. Those beginning with 001, the fault code 2 is valid. NOTE : When installing additional accessories, observe harness clearances near SRS sensor lines. Test equipment : Hand-Held Tester (HHT) (Available through the MBNA Standard Equipment Program.)

1997 Buick Riviera DTC P0341 Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Performance

The camshaft position PCM input is produced by the ignition control module. The ICM produces the camshaft position PCM input by filtering the camshaft position (CMP) sensor pulses when the engine is running and CKP sync pulses are also being received. The PCM uses the camshaft position PCM input pulses to initiate sequential fuel injection and to determine crankshaft position for the misfire diagnostic. The PCM constantly monitors the number of pulses on the camshaft position PCM input circuit and compares the number of camshaft position PCM input pulses to the number of 18X reference pulses and the number of 3X reference pulses being received. If the PCM receives an incorrect number of pulses on the camshaft position PCM input circuit, DTC P0341 will set and the PCM will initiate injector sequence without the camshaft position PCM input with a one in six chance that injector sequence is correct. The engine will continue to start and run normally, although the misfire diagnostic will be disabled. Conditions for Setting the DTC • The engine is running (3X reference pulses are being received). • The ratio of 3X reference pulses to Cam pulses received by the PCM does not equal 6. • The ratio of 3X reference pulses to 18X reference pulses received by the PCM equals 6. • The above conditions are present for 600 engine revolutions. Action Taken When the DTC Sets • The PCM will illuminate the MIL during the second consecutive trip cycle in which the diagnostic test has been run and failed. • The PCM will initiate injector sequence without the camshaft position signal with a one in six chance that injector sequence is correct. • If equipped with traction control, the PCM will command the EBTCM via serial data (CKT 800) to set an ABS/TCS DTC, the EBTCM will turn OFF traction control, and the EBTCM will illuminate the TRACTION OFF lamp. • The PCM will store conditions which were present when the DTC set as Freeze Frame and Fail Records data.

Some 2006-2007 Freestar and Monterey vehicles may experience a melted or damaged spark plug electrode, malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTC’s) P030X, rough idle, engine knock/ping on acceleration. Pre-ignition (which yields these symptoms) may be caused by water entering the powertrain control module (PCM). ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove PCM from vehicle. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-14. 2. Remove the PCM cover by carefully bending back the four (4) retaining clips holding the galvanized metal cover to the top plate. (Figure 1) Figure 1 – Article 07-14-1 3. Look for evidence of water within the PCM (liquid water, rust, water stains or deposits). (Figure 2) If found – obtain a replacement PCM before continuing on to Step 4. If no water is found, continue on to step 4 with the vehicle’s original PCM. Figure 2 – Article 07-14-1 4. Set the PCM top plate in a clean, dry location where the circuitry will be protected from damage. 5. With the PCM cover removed, drill a 1/4″ hole on each of the four (4) corners of the PCM cover. Get as close to the corner as possible. (Figure 3) Figure 3 – Article 07-14-1 6. De-burr the edges on both inside and outside surfaces. (Figure 3) Be sure to vacuum off all chips and wipe off all metal dust and any machining oil. 7. Clean the surfaces of the PCM cover with Motorcraft ZC-21 (Metal Surface Cleaner) or equivalent. Also clean the edges of the PCM top plate. The metal surfaces must be completely clean before proceeding to Step 8. 8. Apply Motorcraft TA-29 Ultra Silicone Sealant to all edges depicted. (Figure 4, 5, 6, 7) Proceed directly to Step 9 – do not let the sealant skin over. NOTE: Motorcraft TA-32 can NOT be used since its constituents may damage the PCM circuitry.
