NOTE: Do not replace the timing belt if it has oil on it from the auto tensioner. Residual oil from the tensioner does not affect timing belt performance. 1. Follow steps 1 thru 12 of Timing Belt Removal in the engine mechanical section of the appropriate shop manual. 2. Secure the timing belt to both cam pulleys using plastic wire ties. This helps to keep the timing belt in place while you replace the auto-tensioner. WIRE TIES 3. Remove the timing belt auto-tensioner. 4. Install the new auto-tensioner. Refer to the engine mechanical section of the appropriate shop manual. 5. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner, and remove the wire ties from the cam pulleys. 6. Replace the dipstick tube O-ring. 7. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Tighten all nuts and bolts to the specifications shown in the appropriate shop manual. NOTE: Overtightening the power steering belt would cause the power steering pulley to fail, so make sure you set the belt tension to the used belt specification. Refer to the steering section of the appropriate shop manual. 8. Center-punch a completion mark above the fourth character of the engine compartment VIN.

BACKGROUND The current routing of the engine drive belt creates extra force on the drive belt auto-tensioner. In rare cases, this extra force could break the auto-tensioner pivot bolt, causing an engine noise or a loss of power steering. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the auto-tensioner pivot bolt, and reroute the drive belt. On vehicles with A/C, install a new drive belt. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. From above the engine, set a long-handled, boxed- end wrench on the drive belt auto-tensioner. Slowly turn the wrench counterclockwise, then remove the drive belt. NOTE: On vehicles without A/C, the drive belt will be reused. 2. Insert a pulley holder (see REQUIRED SPECIAL TOOLS) into one of the holes in the water pump pulley at the 12 o’clock position. The tool holds the pulley so you can loosen or tighten the pulley bolts. WATER PUMP PULLEY 3. Remove the water pump pulley (three bolts). 4. Remove the pivot bolt from the drive belt auto- tensioner. NOTE: In rare cases, the pivot bolt may be broken. If this has happened, remove the auto-tensioner, then remove the shank of the pivot bolt with Vise Grips or by drilling it out. Do not try to repair the engine block using a TIME-SERT. If you can’t remove the shank of the pivot bolt, you would need DPSM approval to install an engine short block assembly.

FORD: 1997-2005 Expedition, F-150 2002-2005 Explorer LINCOLN: 1998-2005 Navigator 2003-2005 Aviator MERCURY: 2002-2005 Mountaineer This article supersedes TSB 05-12-6 to update the Service Kit and Service Procedure information. ISSUE Some vehicles may exhibit an axle whine or hum during acceleration, deceleration and/or cruise. ACTION An axle repair kit has been developed which incorporates most parts required for a comprehensive axle repair. The kit should be used instead of installing a complete axle assembly to repair an axle whine/hum. Replace Ring and Pinion with Axle Kit and Components. NOTE REFER TO THE “DIFFERENTIAL RING AND PINION” IN-VEHICLE REPAIR PROCEDURE IN THE ONLINE WORKSHOP MANUAL SECTION 205-00, FOR THE LATEST AXLE DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PROCEDURES. NOTE FOR 1999 AND PRIOR MODEL YEAR VEHICLES, USE THE 2000 MODEL YEAR WORKSHOP MANUAL.

Installation (2001-02 Montero) 1. Place auto-tensioner in soft-jawed vise to SLOWLY compress the push rod. If there is a plug at the base of the auto-tensioner body, place flat washer around plug so it will not contact vise jaw. CAUTION: Never compress the auto-tensioner too fast, or the push rod will be damaged. 2. Slowly compress auto-tensioner push rod until holes in push rod and auto-tensioner housing are aligned. Insert a locking pin into the alignment holes. Install auto-tensioner on engine. WARNING: Right bank camshaft can easily turn from applied spring pressure. Be careful not to pinch fingers when installing timing belt. 3. Ensure all timing marks are still aligned. See Fig. 11 . Install timing belt on crankshaft sprocket, idler pulley, left bank camshaft sprocket, water pump pulley, right bank camshaft sprocket, and tensioner
