FOLLOW THIS TSB PROCEDURE ONLY IF THERE ARE NO SPECIFIC MISFIRE TSBs/SSMs RELEASED FOR THE VEHICLE SYMPTOM BEING
EXPERIENCED. ISSUEnApproximately 50% of coil on plug (COP) coils returned for warranty do not have a problem.
ACTION The misfiring cylinder must be identified through Self-Test misfire codes or through WDS Power Balance. Rule out base engine problems, rule out fuel problems, and then look at ignition problems (be sure to rule out coil primary circuit issues).
Once the above steps have been completed, and the issue is in the secondary part of the ignition system, the oscilloscope procedure outlined in this TSB can isolate the difference between a coil or spark plug problem.

Some 1999-2004 Navigator, 2002-2003 Blackwood, 2003-2005 Aviator, 2003-2004 Marauder and 2003-2004 Mustang vehicles built before 12/19/2004 equipped with 4.6L 4V/5.4 4V engine may exhibit a runs rough, lacks power, and engine misfire, prompted by a MIL light and DTC codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, and P0316. ACTION Diagnose engine for engine misfire concern. If diagnostics determine an engine misfire which is characterized by leakage through exhaust valve(s), only replace the affected cylinder head(s). SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR VEHICLES WITH RUNS ROUGH/MISFIRE CONDITION: 1. Perform relative compression check on all cylinders. If abnormal, check cylinder leakage and actual compression for “low” cylinders refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00. 2. If leakage/compression check indicates a valve train concern, per valve train diagnostics in WSM, Section 303-00, replace cylinder head and cam assembly, pipe plugs and timing chain tensioner, per procedure outlined in WSM, Section 303-01. 3. If cylinder leakage and compression tests are inconclusive, perform misfire diagnostic, per TSB 05-22-8.

Customer Concern: Tests/Procedures: Potential Causes: Tech Tips: Has a misfire on start up only. Sets cylinder #1 misfire code P0301 and cylinder #4 misfire code P0304. Sets pending misfire code P1399 as well. The problem only lasts a few seconds. Suspecting headgasket since the coolant level is low and smells anti-freeze when the engine is started. 1. Check for evidence of anti-freeze on the spark plugs or in the cylinders. Pressure test the cooling system and check for anti-freeze going into the cylinders. 2. If not anti-freeze, check fuel pressure and see if it holds in case a fuel injector is leaking down. 3. If pulling the cylinder head to replace the headgasket, have the cylinder head sent out and checked for cracks. Cylinder Head Cylinder Head Gasket Fuel Injectors Cylinder head was cracked. Other causes of a misfire like spark plug wires and incorrect valve adjustment are common but those wouldn’t likely be a misfire for just a few seconds on cold start up.

1. Use a scan tool to monitor the fuel trim numbers and the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor data stream grams/sec readings. Nominal
values are 5 grams/sec at idle in Park, and >150 at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) and 5000 RPM, in gear. Some scan tools have a freeze frame feature, which is useful in trouble shooting if the problem is set at idle versus at cruise. Vacuum leaks and crankcase breather problems generally show up at idle. Voltage at the airflow meter should be .7-.9V at idle and increase from there with more airflow. 2. Monitor the crankcase vacuum with a vacuum gauge, which can be adapted onto the tube for the oil dipstick. Specification for the crank case vacuum is 8 to 15 millibar, this equals about 1/4 to 1/2 PSI or pounds per square. So, 1 PSI of vacuum would be twice as much as there should be at idle. The proper method, per BMW, is to use a slack tube manometer which can be made easily with clear tubing and making it into a U shape and have it marked in inch increments then half fill it with water. When crankcase vacuum is applied to one side of the tubing it should displace 4 to 6 inches of water if the crankcase breather is working correctly. 3. Monitor the fuel pressure. It should be a constant 50 – 53 PSI.
