Steering Vibration/Shudder/Moan During Parking Maneuvers on Dry Pavement (Install Power Steering Pressure (Inlet) and/or Return (Outlet) Hose Assembly) 1995-99 Buick Riviera 1997-2001 Buick Park Avenue, Ultra 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville steering vibration, shudder or moan noise when steering during parking maneuvers on dry pavement. Correction Install a new power steering pressure (inlet) hose assembly on the following vehicles: • 1995-98 Buick Riviera • 1997-98 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra Install a new power steering pressure (inlet) and return (outlet) hose assembly on the following vehicles: • 1999 Buick Riviera • 1999-2001 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre • 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville 1. Verify that the power steering pump reservoir is full. • If fluid level is low, fill and check for leaks. • If power steering system has air in the system, perform the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure as described in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual. Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. Verify that the accessory drive belt is in good condition and that the pulleys are not bent or damaged. Verify proper belt tension and operation of the belt tensioner. Check for power steering hose ground out conditions. Check for good engine idle and correct engine RPM. Check to see that the rear transaxle mount does not have a plastic assembly aid installed which is used 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

This will assist in identifying improperly routed vacuum hoses which cause driveability and/or computer-indicated malfunctions. Removal Procedure Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disable the SIR system. 2. Remove the steering wheel from the column. 3. Remove the tilt lever from the lower trim cover. Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1,2) in the lower trim cover before removal. 4. If necessary, remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (1,2) from the lower trim cover (3). Remove the lower trim cover (3). If screws are not present in the lower trim cover, proceed to the next step. 5. Gently unsnap the lower trim cover from the upper trim cover. Important: You must check for 2 pan head tapping screws (1,2) in the lower trim cover (3) before removal. 2004 Buick LeSabre V6-3.8L VIN K 6. If necessary, remove 1 TORX head screw (1) from the upper trim cover (2). If a screw is not present, remove the upper trim cover (2). Installation Procedure Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Important: If the snap on/off feature on the trim covers was damaged during the removal procedure, you must use screws for the installation procedure. If screws were present in the trim covers before the removal procedure, you must use the screws during the installation procedure. If there was not any damage done to the trim covers during the removal procedure and no screws were present, proceed to step 3.

Removal Procedure Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions. 1. Disable the SIR system. 2. Remove the upper and lower trim covers. Important: The abrasion sleeve located on the steering column wire harness assembly must be reinstalled. Make note of what connector is coming out of the abrasion sleeve for installation purposes. 3. Remove the wire harness assembly (1) from the wire harness strap (2). 4. Disconnect the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly connector from the SIR system coil connector. 5. Slide the 2 connectors (2) of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly out of the bulkhead connector (1). 2004 Buick LeSabre V6-3.8L VIN K 6. Remove the 2 pan head tapping screws (1) and (3) from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2). 7. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly. Installation Procedure 1. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) onto the steering column tilt head assembly. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Important: Be sure that the electrical contact of the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2) rests on the turn signal cancel cam assembly.
