Some vehicles may exhibit a grabbing condition from the rear brakes during the first few brake applications. The condition only occurs after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE To service, reduce/minimize moisture intrusion into the rear drum brake assemblies by applying Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the brake backing plate. 1. Place vehicle on hoist and remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the rear brake drums and replace the rear linings. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-02. WARNING Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. 3. Inspect the rear brake assemblies for damaged, missing and/or improperly seated adjuster plug or parking brake cable. 4. Inspect and clean the lining contact area of the brake drum; machine if necessary. 5. Reinstall the rear brake drums and adjust the lining to drum clearance per WSM, Section 206-02. 6. Thoroughly clean the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate to promote proper adhesion of sealant. 7. Apply Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate at the following inter[ace areas (Figure 1): ^ Axle Flange ^ Wheel Cylinder ^ Parking Brake Cable ^ Hold Down Pins NOTE AVOID GETTING SEALANT ON THE BRAKE BLEED SCREW AND BRAKE TUBE NUT. 8. Reinstall the rear wheels and torque lug nuts per Workshop Manual, Section 204-04.

The hydraulic pressure from the dual master cylinder is split diagonally between the right front/left rear and left front/right rear wheel brake circuits, providing a balanced braking response should a malfunction occur in a brake line. The proportioning valve function is produced by the Electronic Brake Proportioning System (EBP). EBP dynamically adjusts the application of hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes. Both front and rear brakes are disc type with single piston floating calipers. The front discs are internally ventilated while the rear discs are solid. To ensure better ventilation of the brakes, additional openings for cooling air have been integrated into the bumper. The parking brakes are drum type with the drum located in the hub area of the rear disc. The self adjusting brake mechanism is like the W140 and is located under the passenger compartment second seat row. Component Location 4-ETS/ABS Hydraulic Unit

BRAKES – REAR BRAKE NOISE- “MOANING/GROANING” FROM REAR BRAKES WHEN COLD ^ NOISE – “MOANING/GROANING” FROM REAR BRAKES WHEN COLD MERCURY: 1999-2001 COUGAR ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes may exhibit a “moaning/groaning” noise on initial brake application (cold soak). This may be caused by the rear brake pads vibrating in the caliper. Braking performance is not affected by this condition. ACTION Install revised Rear Disc Brake Service kit. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Lift and support vehicle. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual, Section 100-01. 2. Remove both rear tire assemblies. 3. Remove rear brake pads per instructions in the Workshop Manual, Section 206- 04.4. Remove U-spring from the top of the caliper and replace with L-spring supplied in kit (Figure 1). NOTE THE LEG OF THE L-SPRING FACES THE OUTSIDE OF VEHICLE.5. Remove adhesive backing protection from new pads with C-springs (Figure 2) and install new pads into caliper. The parking brake control applies tension to the front parking brake cable and conduit (2853) and parking brake cable equalizer (2A602). The parking brake cable equalizer is coupled to the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) and the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit. The respective rear brake assemblies are then applied. The rear wheel brake assembly contains a cable-actuated parking brake assembly. The parking brake releases the rear brakes using a remote release lever incorporated with the parking brake control. If the parking brake control is not fully released, the parking brake signal switch will illuminate the brake warning light. The parking brake signal switch is mounted on the parking brake control. The switch is held in place by a self-tapping screw and aligned with a locater pin. The drum brake parking brake system is self-adjusting, therefore cable tension does not need to be adjusted.
