1. Adjust rear brakes. Release parking brake. Raise and support vehicle. Check parking brake cables for free movement. See Fig. 7 . Lower vehicle. Move front seats forward. Pry off plastic caps that cover access holes to parking brake console hood-to-tunnel bracket screws. Unfasten screws that secure parking brake console hood to tunnel brackets. Raise console hood to expose parking brake lever assembly and adjustment nut. See Fig. 8 . 2. Partially raise and support vehicle. Turn adjustment nut on lever assembly until wheels are difficult to turn. Loosen nut until rear wheels are just free to turn. Lower vehicle, position parking brake console hood and fasten it to tunnel brackets with screws. Tighten parking brake console hood-to-tunnel bracket screws to 2.5 N.m (22 INCH lbs.). Snap in plastic caps that cover access holes to parking brake console hood-to-tunnel bracket screws. Adjust front seats to their previous position.

Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove the air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Remove crankshaft pulley. Lower vehicle. 4. Support engine assembly from above with Support Fixture (J-28467-B). See Fig. 1 . Remove engine mount bracket from timing belt end of engine. See Fig. 2 . 5. Remove front timing belt cover. Using crankshaft center bolt, rotate crankshaft one full turn clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine). 6. Align mark on crankshaft sprocket with notch at bottom of rear timing belt cover. See Fig. 3 . Align camshaft sprocket timing marks with notches on valve cover. See Fig. 4 . CAUTION: Engine damage could result if camshaft sprockets are not properly aligned with notches on valve cover. 7. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. Use an Allen wrench to rotate tensioner and relieve tension on timing belt. See Fig. 5 . Remove timing belt. Installation 1. Ensure crankshaft and camshaft timing timing marks are still aligned. Install the timing belt. See Fig. 6 . Turn the timing belt tensioner clockwise to tension the timing belt. Turn tensioner until the pointer aligns with the notch on the rear timing belt cover. Tighten automatic tensioner bolt. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . 2. Using crankshaft center bolt, turn crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) 2 full revolutions. Ensure timing belt tensioner pointer is still aligned with notch. 3. If timing belt tensioner is correctly aligned, install timing belt cover. Install the engine mount bracket on the timing belt end of engine. Install crankshaft pulley. Install serpentine accessory drive belt. Install right front splash shield. Install right front wheel. 4. Install air filter housing. Connect air intake temperature sensor connector. Connect negative battery cable.

CAUTION: The torque converter must be replaced if a transmission failure resulted in large amounts of metal or fiber contamination in the fluid. The torque converter is a hydraulic device that couples the engine crankshaft to the transmission. The torque converter consists of an outer shell with an internal turbine (1), a stator (3), an overrunning clutch, an impeller (2), and an electronically applied converter clutch. The converter clutch provides reduced engine speed and greater fuel economy when engaged. Clutch engagement also provides reduced transmission fluid temperatures. The converter clutch engages in third through fifth gears. The torque converter hub drives the transmission oil (fluid) pump. See Fig. 267. A turbine damper (6) has been added for some applications to help improve vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics. The torque converter is a sealed, welded unit that is not repairable and is serviced as an assembly. IMPELLER

Automatic Transmission/Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder, Water in Transmission (Repair Transmission and Replace Transmission Filler Tube, Level Indicator and Seal) Condition Some customers may comment on a shudder condition at approximately 64-80 km/h (40-50 mph) when the TCC engages. Cause This condition may be caused by water in the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Water may enter the transmission by dripping from the cowl area onto the handle of the transmission fluid level indicator. Indications of water in the ATF may include: • Visible rust on the transmission fluid level indicator. • Visible water in the oil pan. • A milky white substance inside the pan area. • Spacer plate gaskets that appear to be glued to the spacer plate, valve body or case. • Rust on internal transmission iron/steel components. Correction First, repair the transmission and second, replace the transmission fill tube, seal and level indicator to prevent repeat water contamination of the ATF. Transmission Repair 1. Remove the transmission. Refer to the appropriate SI procedure. 2. Disassemble and inspect the transmission. Refer to Unit Repair Automatic Transmission – 4L60-E/4L65-E. Important: If water or coolant is found in the transmission, the following components MUST be replaced. • Replace all of the rubber type seals. • Replace all of the composition-faced clutch plate assemblies including the band. • Replace all of the nylon parts (Thrust Washers). • Replace the torque converter. • Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter. • Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J 45096. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-07-30- 052C or newer – Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flush and Flow Test Essential Tool J 45096 TransFlow . Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator WITH the transmission REMOVED from vehicle. 1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube from the transmission. 2. Replace the transmission fill tube seal, P/N 1259475. 3. Replace the transmission fill tube, P/N 15000220, following the appropriate SI Document for Transmission Installation. 4. Replace the transmission fluid level indicator, P/N 15069769 when appropriate during the transmission installation. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator with the transmission in the vehicle. 1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement (SI Document ID# 1364496). 2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the filler tube.

PROBABLE CAUSE The torque converter is faulty. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the torque converter, or the torque converter and the transmission, and update the PCM with the HDS. NOTE: You must update the PCM to complete the repair.REPAIR PROCEDURE B Follow the IN-WARRANTY EXCHANGE steps in service bulletin 90-009, Automatic Transmission In- Warranty Exchange Program, to order a remanufactured A/T, replace the failed A/T, and return the failed A/T core. 1. Remove the transmission: • Refer to page 14-203 of the 2003–04 MDX Service Manual, or • Online, enter keyword A/T REM, and select A/T Removal from the list. 2. Clean the transmission cooler. Refer to service bulletin 89-015, ATF Cooler Cleaner. 3. Install a remanufactured transmission: • Refer to page 14-215 of the 2003–04 MDX Service Manual, or • Online, enter keyword A/T INSTALL, and select A/T Installation from the list. 4. Update the PGM-FI software using HDS version 1.018.016 or later (see SOFTWARE INFORMATION). Refer to service bulletin 01-026, Updating the ECM/PCM. 5. Do the idle learn procedure: • Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are turned off. • Start the engine and let it run until it reaches its normal operating temperature (cooling fan cycles twice). • Let the engine idle with the throttle fully closed for 10 minutes.
