STRUT/SHOCK ABSORBER CAUTION: Removal 1. With vehicle on floor, remove plastic cap which covers upper strut/shock retaining nuts. Remove strut/shock retaining nuts. Slowly raise vehicle until weight is off spring. Remove bolt which retains lower end of strut/shock absorber to axle beam mount. Raise vehicle until strut/shock can be removed. Place strut/shock assembly in vise. 2. Hold piston rod. Remove strut/shock retaining nut and related components. See Fig. 1 . Remove slotted nut (some models). Remove spacer and coil spring. If coil spring is to be replaced, ensure paint stripe color on replacement spring matches original spring color stripe. Installation 1. Install protective cap and tube onto shock absorber. Install rubber buffer with small end downward. Install snap ring and washer. Place spring into lower seat. Install upper retainer with spacer sleeve. 2. Tighten slotted nut (some models) which retains piston rod. Install upper mounting hardware. Tighten piston rod. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. SUSPENSION ASSEMBLY CAUTION: DO NOT remove both suspension strut/shock absorbers at same time. When removing suspension assembly, add weight to rear of vehicle to prevent tipping due to change in center of gravity.

CAUTION: The vehicle must be standing on its wheels when removing the upper shock absorber mounting. 1 Detach upper shock absorber mounting. Model 140: Counter piston rod with Alien wrench (WAF 5). NOTE: Installation: Replace self-locking nut (11a). 2 Remove plate (11b) and rubber mount (11c). 3 Raise vehicle. 4 Detach shock absorber (11) from wishbone (31) and remove downwards. CAUTION: Installation: Replace self-locking nut (11u). 5 Remove mounting parts (11y, 11d, 11f, 11h) for shock absorber (11). 6 Check shock absorber. 7 Install in the reverse order. Remove/install Rear Shock Absorber CAUTION: Installation: Replace self-locking nuts and bolts. 1 Detach upper shock absorber mounting NOTE: The vehicle must be standing on its wheels when removing the upper shock absorber mounting. 2 Remove plate (75b) and rubber mount (75c) 3 Raise vehicle. 4 Remove rear axle switch for roll bar 5 Remove spring link cover (72c). 6 Detach damper (75) from spring link 7 Remove attaching parts (75k, 75d, 75f, 75i) of damper (75) 8 Shock absorber inspection 9 Install in the reverse order

Removing Shock Absorber Attachment To Knuckle 8. Remove the shock absorber from the rear knuckle first when removing the shock absorber from vehicle by pushing down on the rear suspension. 9. Move shock assembly downward and tilt top of shock outward, then remove shock assembly from vehicle through top of wheel opening. DISASSEMBLY – SHOCK ASSEMBLY For the disassembly and assembly of the shock assembly, use strut spring compressor Pentastar Service Equipment (PSE) tool W-7200, or the equivalent, to compress the coil spring. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely.

Removal WARNING: All vehicles are equipped with gas pressurized shock absorbers which will extend unassisted. Do not apply heat or flame to the shock absorbers during removal or component servicing. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury. CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect the performance of vital components and their failure can result in major service expense. They must be replaced with the same part number or an equivalent part if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to ensure proper retention of these parts. Vehicles equipped with air suspension 1. WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be turned off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Turn the air suspension service switch off. All vehicles 2. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 3. Use the special tool 014-00942 or equivalent to support the rear axle. Vehicles equipped with air suspension 4. WARNING: Do not remove an air spring under any circumstances when there is air pressure in the air spring. Do not remove any components supporting an air spring without exhausting the air. Release the air pressure from the air springs. For additional information, refer to Section 204-05. All vehicles 5. NOTE: Replace shock absorbers individually as required. It is not necessary to replace in pairs. NOTE: To assist in removing the upper attachment on shock absorbers, use a plastic dust tube and place an open end wrench on the hex stamped into the dust tube’s metal cap. For shock absorbers with a steel dust tube, simply grasp the tube to prevent stud rotation when loosening the retaining nut. Remove the shock absorber upper retaining nut, washer and insulator from the stud on the upper side of the frame. 6. Remove and discard the nut. Disconnect the shock absorber lower stud from the mounting bracket on the rear axle assembly. Installation All vehicles 1. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Vehicles equipped with air suspension 2. Inflate the air springs. For additional information, refer to Section 204-05.
