temperature variation between the left and right hand ducts. Typical concerns may include that the right side of the vehicle cools down but the left stays warm or the opposite. This condition is sometimes associated by the customer with a recent service visit for other non-related repairs. The codes, DTC B0361 or B0441, may be present but will not illuminate a telltale lamp. The HVAC controller unit and the TEMP door actuator motors rely on a feedback system that supplies the controller with count values in order to accurately adjust the air temperature. When battery power is interrupted to the HVAC controller, the current actuator position values are lost. When power is restored, the controller will perform a “sweep test” of the doors from full cold to full hot and record the end values for reference. Over time, the TEMP doors may develop some flexing when run to their extremes. This flexing allows the count values to run out of range (beyond 0-255) and results in DTC code B0361 or B0441 to set. A revised HVAC controller has been released with new programming that allows for a wider tolerance in the expected range of the TEMP door. Replace the controller using the procedure below: Important: On the 1997 Buick Century and Regal, additional steps are required. You will have to run a jumper wire to the new HVAC controller. Be sure to follow the additional 1997 model year steps below. 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Important: On the Buick Regal, the console must first be removed to access the HVAC controller. For Buick Century and Oldsmobile Intrigue, skip to Step 10. Apply the parking brake and block wheels. Shift the transmission to first gear. Remove the console trim plate and disconnect the electrical harness. Disconnect the cigarette lighter sockets. Remove the console storage box. Remove the console control plate and disconnect electrical harness for traction control and heated seats, if equipped. 8. Remove the console retaining bolts. 9. Remove the console from the vehicle. 10.Remove the HVAC trim panel, if equipped. 11.Remove the HVAC controller retaining bolts. 12.Disconnect the electrical harness. 13.Discard the HVAC controller.

Correction Install a new power steering pressure (inlet) hose assembly on the following vehicles: • 1995-98 Buick Riviera • 1997-98 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra Install a new power steering pressure (inlet) and return (outlet) hose assembly on the following vehicles: • 1999 Buick Riviera • 1999-2001 Buick Park Avenue and Ultra • 2000-2001 Buick LeSabre • 2000-2001 Pontiac Bonneville 1. Verify that the power steering pump reservoir is full. • If fluid level is low, fill and check for leaks. • If power steering system has air in the system, perform the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure as described in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual. Important: When performing the “Bleeding Air from Power Steering System” procedure, it is important that the front of the vehicle is supported by the lower control arms. If the vehicle is not supported by the lower control arms, the procedure may cause the strut bushing to dislocate and cause new concern. Verify that the accessory drive belt is in good condition and that the pulleys are not bent or damaged. Verify proper belt tension and operation of the belt tensioner. Check for power steering hose ground out conditions. Check for good engine idle and correct engine RPM. NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures to retrieve or clear trouble codes without the Super Star II tester. The anti-lock brake/traction assist system has on-board diagnostic capabilities. However, the module as received from manufacturing is equipped with a stored error code (61). This will affect the service procedure. The error codes can be retrieved from the ABS module in the following manner. 1. 2. 3. 4. Connect Super STAR II tester to connector located in engine compartment on the power distribution box. Turn on Super STAR II tester and latch button down in TEST position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Read first code output. After approximately 15 seconds, the next code will be output. Leave button latched until all codes are output. NOTE: Make sure that all codes are written down. 5. The diagnostic procedure should be as follows provided that the CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator stays on all the time or flashes intermittently. NOTE: If the BRAKE warning indicator is on or intermittently comes on, refer to the Warning Indicator Symptom Chart. NOTE: If there are more codes stored in the anti-lock brake control module memory, no codes will erase until all codes have been output by the Super STAR II tester, all malfunctions have been serviced and the vehicle is driven about 40 km/h (25 mph). This means that if a 20s code originally existed and was serviced, it can be ignored when running the on-board diagnostic the second time. If the first code received is 18, 19 or in the 20s and no other code is received, service the indicated component. No other codes can be output if a 20s code exists. After servicing the indicated 18, 19, or 20s code, repeat the procedure for retrieving error codes. 6. If a code 61 is received with any other code, ignore the code 61 and service the other indicated components. If, after correcting all other indicated malfunctions, the CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator is still on, service the Fluid Level Switch (FLS) circuit. 7. If a code 61 is received and no other codes are received, service the FLS circuit. 8. If no code, or only a code 10 is received, use the Anti-Lock Quick Check Sheet since some possibilities are not recognized and retained in the anti-lock brake control module memory. When dealing with intermittent ABS warning light ON concern, make certain to visually inspect all wiring related to the component associated with the code received.

Powertrain DTC Summaries – OBD II FAULT DESCRIPTION MONITORING CONDITIONS CHECK ENGINE MIL (CK ENG) DEFAULT ACTION POSSIBLE CAUSES DTC Diagnostic Trouble Code. SYS The powertrain system with which the DTC is associated – EMS, TRANS, ABS/TC (DSC). DTC retrieval tools: OBD II – indicates that the DTC is an OBD II code and can be accessed via a generic scan tool or WDS. JAG – indicates that the DTC is not an OBD II code and is accessed only via WDS. Fault description. “DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR DRIVE CYCLE” for the particular DTC. Operate the vehicle as described to check for a reoccurrence of the DTC. Refer to pages 4 – 7. HIGH VOLTAGE – High voltage can be either sensor supply voltage (5 volts) or B+ voltage. 1 TRIP – indicates that the CHECK ENGINE MIL is activated by a fault occurring during ONE “TRIP”. 2 TRIPS – indicates that the CHECK ENGINE MIL is activated by a fault occurring during TWO CONSECUTIVE “TRIPS”. NO – indicates that the CHECK ENGINE MIL is not activated. OBD SYSTEM READINESS – ENGINE MANAGEMENT If DTC P1000 is flagged after DTCs have been cleared, all engine management OBD diagnostic monitor drive cycles HAVE NOT BEEN COMPLETED. If DTC P1111 is flagged after DTCs have been cleared, all engine management OBD diagnostic monitor drive cycles HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. OBD SYSTEM READINESS – TRANSMISSION Use WDS Datalogger “TOTAL NUMBER OF DTC SET” to determine if transmission OBD monitoring has been completed. Refer to page 7. OBD DIAGNOSTIC MONITORS The Engine Management and Transmission Control systems are continuously checked during vehicle operation by the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) on-board diagnostic (OBD) facilities. Powertrain OBD incorporates six diagnostic monitors. Each monitor has an associated group of DTCs. The diagnostic monitors will complete the diagnostic test(s) if a specified service “drive cycle” is carried out.
