Cooling fan motors operate when Powertrain Control Module (PCM) determines fan operation depending on crankshaft position, Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, vehicle speed, Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, A/C switch and refrigerant pressure switch inputs. Cooling fans receive power through the cooling fan relay. Condenser fan operates only when A/C compressor clutch engages except 2004 models with turbocharger which uses dual fans for engine cooling with or without A/C operation. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . COMPONENT LOCATION For component locations, refer to illustrations. See Fig. 1 -Fig. 3 .

NOTE: 1. Mazda vehicles are manufactured with tamper-proof speedometers and the mileage can not be altered or adjusted. 2. When a speedometer is replaced, the new speedometer will read zero (0). 3. This procedure is extremely important to accurately represent actual vehicle mileage. 4. The “Speedometer Replacement Label” referenced below is available through the Mazda Program Center for a limited time. Mazda Motor of America, Inc. is providing 1 sheet of 20 labels with this bulletin (see Illustration). REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE 1. Remove and replace the speedometer according to the workshop manual. 2. Complete the following information on the “Speedometer Replacement Label.” ^ Mileage before speedometer replacement ^ Date of replacement ^ Dealer code. 3. Attach the label to the driver’s side “B” pillar. 4. Complete the “Speedometer Replacement Record” in the Warranty Information Booklet as referenced.

1994-1997 Ford Probe, Mazda MX3 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1994-2000 Mazda 626 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1998-2000 Mazda 626 with 6 cyl. & A/T 1995-2000 Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique with 6 cyl. & A/T 1999-2001 Mercury Cougar with A/T SUBJECT Vehicles with the Ford CD4E automatic transmission. CONDITION The driver’s side front CV axle has a 6-½ inch male inboard stub that fits into the transmission’s side gear. On the stub next to the housing seal surface is a carrier support surface that fits into the final drive sun gear inside the transmission (see figure 1). This sprocket assembly is chain driven with the reverse/overdrive sprocket by the planetary gear sets (see figure 2). The final drive sprocket assembly rides on the axle stub carrier support surface using a pressed, center bored bushing. This bushing wears the carrier support surface causing damage to the axle and eventually the transmission. SOLUTION If the carrier support surface of the axle being replaced appears rough and worn, then several possible failures need to be checked before replacing the axle or premature failure of the axle or possible damage to the transmission could occur. If the transmission’s internal oiling solenoid that lubricates this bushing fails, then the 2nd and 3rd gearshifts will not function. Although the Aftermarket lists this bushing, no tool exists to replace it. Ford only offer the bushing in a complete sprocket assembly making its replacement a very costly repair. The most common contributor to premature wear of this bushing is the vehicle not being within proper alignment specs. Without a four-wheel alignment, even though the front wheels may be centered to the rack, the rear thrust is pushing the front wheels causing stress on the front CV joints. The thrust forces acting on the front wheels while driving changes ALL the alignment specs resulting in the front wheels being in a constant turning action. This will wear the side gears and transmission seals as well as stressing this bushing. Another possible sign that alignment is affecting these items is a worn or torn inboard boot. Do not forget that worn motor mounts will also affect alignment thrust forces.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S) / VINS 2001-2007 Truck / B-Series (2.3L Only) 2005-2006 Tribute (2.3L Only) 2003-2007 Mazda6 (2.3L Only) 2004-2007 Mazda3 (2.0L & 2.3L) 2006-2007 Mazda5 2006-2007 Mazda MX-5 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 2007 Mazda CX-7 2007 Mazdaspeed3 DESCRIPTION When removing or replacing the crankshaft pulley on a 2.0L (Mazda3 only) or a 2.3L engine, be sure to follow the Workshop Manual procedures. The crankshaft pulley is not keyed to the crankshaft, and when loosened, it may move out of position on the crankshaft. The engine MUST be re-timed whenever the crankshaft pulley bolt is loosened, removed, or replaced. For normal aspirated engines, follow the Workshop Manual procedures and time the engine using Special Tools (Crankshaft Alignment Pin 303-507, Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool 303-465 and a standard M6 X 1.0 X 2.25 bolt). For direct injection spark ignition engines, follow the Workshop Manual procedures and time the engine using Special Tools (Crankshaft Alignment Pin 303-507, Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool 303-1061 and a standard M6 X 1.0 X 2.25 bolt). Please refer to the Mazda Job Aid on MS3 under Training titled “Engine Timing Verification and Correction LF2.0L and L3/L3T 2.3L” for more information. CAUTION: Engine damage will occur if the engine is not re-timed properly. Refer to applicable Workshop Manual (Section 01-10 – MECHANICAL – 2.0L (Mazda3 only) or 2.3L). NOTE: Damage to an engine caused by not following proper Workshop Manual procedures may result in denial of warranty claims or back charges.
