NOTE: The compressor clutch assembly can be serviced with the refrigerant system fully-charged. Typical A/C compressor shown in illustrations. 1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the accessory drive belt. 3. Disconnect the engine wire harness from the compressor clutch field coil connector (1) located on the top of the A/C compressor (5). 4. Remove the bolts that secure the A/C compressor to the engine and support the A/C compressor. 5. Carefully remove the compressor clutch field coil connector and wire lead from the connector bracket (2). 6. Remove the compressor shaft bolt (3). A band-type oil filter wrench or a strap wrench may be used to hold the clutch plate (4) from rotating during bolt removal. CAUTION: Do not pry between the clutch plate and the pulley and bearing assembly to remove the clutch plate from the compressor shaft as this may damage the clutch plate. NOTE: Use care not to lose any clutch shim(s) during removal of the clutch plate, as they may be reused during the clutch plate installation process. 7. Tap the clutch plate (2) lightly with a plastic mallet to release it from the splines on the compressor shaft (1) and remove the clutch plate and shim(s) (3). 8. Using snap ring pliers (2), remove the snap ring (1) that secures the pulley and bearing assembly (3) to the front of the A/C compressor and remove the pulley and bearing assembly. 9. Using snap ring pliers (Special Tool C-4574 or equivalent) (1), remove the snap ring (4) that secures the compressor clutch field coil (2) to the front of the A/C compressor (3) and remove the field coil. INSTALLATION NOTE: Typical A/C compressor shown in illustrations.

When discharging air conditioning system, use only approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Make every attempt to avoid discharging refrigerant into the atmosphere. NOTE: The purpose of this article is to provide GENERAL servicing overview. For more specific information, refer to the AUTO A/C-HEAT SYSTEM, MANUAL A/C-HEAT SYSTEM, or HEATER SYSTEM articles in this section. NOTE: Due to variety of clutch and shaft seal configurations, obtain appropriate A/C compressor service tools for compressor being serviced. ATSUGI ROTARY VANE CLUTCH COIL R & I Removal When replacing compressor clutch, be careful not to scratch shaft or bend pulley. When removing center bolt, hold clutch disc with Clutch Holder (KV99231010). Using Hub Puller (KV998VR001), remove clutch disc. When removing pulley, remove lock nut with Hub Socket (KV99235160)

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION A permanent magnet motor moves each of the power windows. A master switch on driver’s door controls all
windows and can lock out rear window operation (Dakota Quad Cab and Durango). Power is supplied from a circuit breaker in the junction block when ignition is on. A positive and negative battery connection to either of the 2 motor terminals will cause the motor to rotate in one direction. Reversing current through these same 2 connections will cause the motor to rotate in the opposite direction. Each individual motor is grounded through the master switch by a wire attached to the instrument panel reinforcement.
Vehicles are equipped with an Auto Down feature. Driver’s window can be lowered without having to hold the
switch in the down position. Auto Down feature can be activated by pressing down switch past first detent.

1. Position a floor jack under the right side lower suspension arm. 2. Raise the wheel and allow the tire to lightly contact the floor (vehicle weight relieved from the tire). 3. Mount a dial indicator (Special Tool C3339 or equivalent) solidly on the upper suspension arm (Fig. 1 ). Fig. 1: Right Side View Of Suspension (Wheel/Tire Removed For Clarity) 4. Position the dial indicator plunger against the back side of the steering knuckle boss for the upper ball joint (Fig. 1 ). 5. Zero the dial indicator while pulling outward on the top of the tire. 6. While an assistant watches the dial indicator gauge, grasp the top of the tire and push inward. Record the dial indicator reading observed from the full outward to full inward position. 7. Repeat Step #1 through Step #6 on the left side upper ball joint. When both the left and the right upper ball joints have been inspected, proceed to Step #8. 8. Based on the results recorded in Step #6: a. If the lateral movement on both upper ball joints is less than 0.060 in. (1.52 mm), no further action is required. Remove the dial indicator, lower the wheel and return the vehicle to the owner. b. If the lateral movement on either of the upper ball joints is greater than 0.060 in. (1.52 mm), replace both upper ball joints as described in the Repair Procedure.
