IF YOU CONFIRM: • DTC P0400 (EGR) or P0402 (EGRC-BPT Valve) is stored in the ECM, and/or • The vehicle exhibits rough running or other drivability incidents, and/or • Difficulty in setting the EGR System Readiness Test (SRT) status to CMPLT. ACTION: Clean the intake manifold EGR ports.SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove the throttle chamber assembly and place it aside. • Refer to the EM section of the appropriate Service Manual (ESM). NOTE: It is not necessary to completely remove the throttle chamber assembly. • Only remove harness connectors, cables, and hoses necessary to allow the throttle chamber assembly to be placed aside. • Throttle chamber coolant hoses do not need to be removed. NOTE: Figure 1 gives a general location of the plugs for the EGR ports, but the plugs are not visible in the photo. 2/4 2. Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts and then move the EGR valve outward about ½ inch (see Figure 2). • This is so you can remove the plug for the “rear most” EGR port. EMISSION SYSTEMS & SUB-SYSTEMS EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) SYSTEM TEST NOTE: EGR systems contain different components depending on application. See Fig. 19 . When testing EGR system and components, use proper illustration determine component location. NOTE: When performing EGR system test, it may be necessary to monitor engine by using scan tool. For scan tool connections, see IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE in ADJUSTMENTS 1. Ensure EGR vacuum modulator filter is clean and in good condition. Clean filter with compressed air (if necessary). NOTE:
EGR vacuum modulator filter must be installed with coarse side facing
upward, away from EGR vacuum modulator.

Some customers may experience a water leak at the front floor area. Water may be Introduction entering the body due to a body sealer void on the engine compartment rear wall, near the upper door hinge. Repair 1. Raise the vehicle. On the side of the vehicle that has the water leak, remove the front Procedure wheel and the front fender plastic liner. 2. Examine (with flash light and mirror) the body sealer condition on the engine compartment rear wall, near the upper door hinge. Also examine the sealer condition inside the inner fender box frame structure with access holes (see illustration).

CAUTION: If ECM replacement is instructed in following testing, always ensure ECM connectors and ground circuit are okay. If either are suspect, repair and repeat testing to confirm ECM malfunction. Circuit Description The EGR system recirculates exhaust gas through intake system to reduce combustion temperature and NOx emissions. The amount of EGR valve opening is regulated by the EGR vacuum modulator according to engine load. Vacuum source to valve is controlled by the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV), which is controlled by The EGR valve is closed (VSV on) under the following conditions: Engine is not warmed up. Vehicle under deceleration.
Light engine load. Engine racing.

IF YOU CONFIRM The MIL is ON and code P1402 EGR OPEN is stored in the ECM. ACTION • Inspect the EGR valve for metallic debris. See the Service Information section of this bulletin for the specific inspection procedure. • If metallic debris is present, replace the Bank 1 catalyst and EGR valve. SERVICE INFORMATION 1. Remove the EGR valve as per the EM section of the respective ESM. 2. Inspect the EGR valve for metallic flake debris. (see Figures 1 and 2) 3. If metallic debris is present in the EGR valve, remove Bank 1 catalyst (rear of engine) as per EM section of the respective ESM. 4. Inspect both the top and bottom of the catalyst. • Bank 1 Catalyst–viewed from the top. (see Figure 3) 5. If the catalyst has loose material as seen if Figure 3 above, blow out the debris from interior of Bank 1 exhaust manifold. Remove the EGR valve and tube, and then blow out any debris from the EGR valve and tube. 6. Replace the Bank 1 catalyst and EGR valve in the reverse order of removal. 7. Clear stored code P1402 from the ECM memory.
