FORD: 2005 Mustang 2004-2005 F-150 2005 Expedition, F-250, F-350 This article supersedes TSB 05-15-8 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature. The noise may be described as “ticks”, “taps”, “knocks”, or “thumps”. In some cases the noise may be a normal characteristic of these engines. In other cases the noise may require further investigation. Sorting out and defining the noise as reported by the customer is important to successfully diagnose and/or repair the condition. ACTION Before starting diagnosis, it is critical to determine the specific engine noise the customer is concerned with. The customer should be interviewed to get their detailed perception and description of the noise, and to determine if the noise occurs at idle or above idle speed, and if the engine is cold, hot, or both. Attempt to duplicate the noise, and determine the source of the symptom. Refer to the following Service Procedure to help determine the source of the noise and if a repair is needed. INTRODUCTION Some models may be equipped with one or more resettable maintenance reminder lights indicating service is required. Once services are performed, resetting of lights may be required. Information is provided to reset these lights where applicable. Most vehicles are equipped with a computer malfunction indicator light. If light comes on and remains on while driving, the vehicle requires service. After repairing fault(s) and clearing fault code(s), the malfunction indicator light should go out. Some models may use a dual-function indicator light, which is also used to indicate emission component service is due. After performing required service, reset indicator light. RESET PROCEDURES (CADILLAC) NOTE: 1980 CADILLAC 1. Every 15,000 miles, a reminder flag appears in speedometer face, indicating service of oxygen sensor is necessary. Inspect and service oxygen sensor as necessary, and reset flag. 2. To reset flag, remove lower steering column cover. Sensor reset cable is located to the left of the speedometer cluster. Pull cable lightly (maximum 2 lbs. force). Reinstall lower steering column cover. 1989-93 ALLANTE Engine Data Display 1. An OIL LIFE INDEX is one of the displays on Driver Information Center (DIC). It will display remaining oil life as a percentage estimate of the useful life of oil. 2. It will show 100 percent when the system is reset. When the oil life is 0 percent, the display will show CHANGE ENGINE OIL. After changing oil, reset oil life display. 3. To reset service reminder on 1989 models, press RANGE button until OIL LIFE INDEX appears on display. Depress and hold in AVG ECON and RANGE buttons for more than 5 seconds or until 100 is displayed. This will reset remaining oil life to 100 percent. 4. On 1990-93 models, press RANGE button until OIL LIFE INDEX appears on DIC display. Depress and hold in AVG SPEED and RANGE buttons for more than 5 seconds or until 100 is displayed. This will reset remaining oil life to 100 percent. 1989-91 ELDORADO & SEVILLE Most General Motors 1981-88 vehicles do not use a Service Reminder Indicator (SRI).

Fault Idle would intermittently rev up to 4000 rpm. Car would also accelerate on its own up to around 3000 rpm when driven off. If clutch depressed during this time while driving, the engine would rev up to 4000 rpm.

At present the vehicle needs to be returned to a Ford dealer for the engine management ECM to be reprogrammed using dedicated equipment. It has been noted that affected Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97FB-12A650-ASA. Later Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97 -12A650-AFC. After the original Ford EECV engine management ECM has been reprogrammed, the Ford dealer should tag the Ford EECV ECM with the new part number

The purpose of the Reset Adaptions function is to reset the base values stored in the CM’s memory to a zero state. These base values vary according to the age of the engine and the purpose of them is to maintain a perfectly adjusted engine system. After a reset the CM will re-learn the values, either automatically or by the technician performing a number of steps. The function should be used when important components have been replaced. If the base values are not reset the engine will experience stalling and hesitation problems. The process for Reset Adaptions varies from CM to CM. The technician may have to go through several steps to successfully complete the reset and re-learn procedure. On systems which require a diagnostic command the scan tool will attempt to guide the technician through these steps, but due to battery voltage dips during engine cranking the scan tool may reset before a procedure has been completed.
