Some vehicles may exhibit a grabbing condition from the rear brakes during the first few brake applications. The condition only occurs after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE To service, reduce/minimize moisture intrusion into the rear drum brake assemblies by applying Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the brake backing plate. 1. Place vehicle on hoist and remove the rear wheels. 2. Remove the rear brake drums and replace the rear linings. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 206-02. WARNING Do not breathe dust or use compressed air to blow dust from storage containers or friction components. Remove dust using government-approved techniques. Friction component dust may be a cancer and lung disease hazard. Exposure to potentially hazardous components may occur if dusts are created during repair of friction components, such as brake pads and clutch discs. Exposure may also cause irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract, and may cause allergic reactions and/or may lead to other chronic health effects. If irritation persists, seek medical attention or advice. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. 3. Inspect the rear brake assemblies for damaged, missing and/or improperly seated adjuster plug or parking brake cable. 4. Inspect and clean the lining contact area of the brake drum; machine if necessary. 5. Reinstall the rear brake drums and adjust the lining to drum clearance per WSM, Section 206-02. 6. Thoroughly clean the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate to promote proper adhesion of sealant. 7. Apply Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket and Sealant to the backside of the rear drum brake backing plate at the following inter[ace areas (Figure 1): ^ Axle Flange ^ Wheel Cylinder ^ Parking Brake Cable ^ Hold Down Pins NOTE AVOID GETTING SEALANT ON THE BRAKE BLEED SCREW AND BRAKE TUBE NUT. 8. Reinstall the rear wheels and torque lug nuts per Workshop Manual, Section 204-04.

Removal 1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. 2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly. 3. Remove rear stabilizer bar link and bushing link nuts at both ends of rear stabilizer bar (5A772) . Rotate bar up and out of the way. 4. Disconnect parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) at rear disc brake caliper (2553) . 5. Install three Rotunda Spring Cages 086-00031 or equivalent to rear spring as follows: a. Install one spring cage without an adjuster link to the inboard side (the innermost “bend” of the rear spring (5560) ). b. Install two more spring cages, with adjusters, at 120 degree angles to the previously installed cage. Spring, Rear 6. Place a transmission jack or suitable stand under the rear suspension arm and bushing (5500) as far outboard as possible. 7. Support the rear wheel knuckle (5A969) assembly by wiring the rear suspension arm and bushing to the body. 8. Remove lower rear shock absorber mounting bolt, washer and nut. 9. NOTE: Rear suspension arm and bushing must not be lowered until pivot bolts are loose. Do not attempt to remove plastic cap on front pivot nut. Loosen both inboard pivot bolts on rear suspension arm and bushing . 10. Remove two bolts and nuts retaining rear suspension arm and bushing to rear wheel knuckle . 11. Lower the rear suspension arm and bushing by lowering jack. Ensure spring cages properly seat on rear spring as rear suspension arm and bushing is dropped. 12. Remove jack, lower rear suspension arm and bushing down fully by hand and remove rear spring with cages in place. 13. Remove rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) , if necessary. 14. If spring cages are to be removed for installation on rear spring , use Coil Spring Compressor D78P-5310-A or equivalent to compress rear spring and remove cages. Rear spring center mounting insulator should be installed on rear spring before installing rear spring in tool to prevent slipping of plates.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00. 3. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. 5. Fill the axle with the specified quantity of the specified lubricant. For additional information, refer to the Specifications in this section. Item 2: Rear Disc Brake Caliper Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support. Position the rear disc brake caliper aside. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00. Item 7: Differential Pinion Shaft Removal Note 1. Move the differential pinion shaft out far enough to remove the U-washers. Replace the shaft and install the lock bolt finger tight when U-washers are removed. Item 8: U-washer Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves. Remove the U-washers. 1. Push the axle shafts inboard. 2. Remove the U-washers. Item 10 and 11: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal and Axle Shaft Bearing Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 8.8 inch rear axle, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. 2. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 9.75 inch and the 10.25 inch rear axles, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. Item 11: Axle Shaft Bearing Installation Note 1. For the 8.8 inch and the 9.75 inch rear axles, use the special tools to install the rear axle wheel bearing. 2. For the 10.25 inch rear axle, use the special tools shown to install the rear axle wheel bearing. Item 10: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal Installation Note 1. Use the special tools shown to install the rear wheel bearing oil seal. Item 8: U-washer Installation Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the U-washer grooves. Install the U-washers. 1. Position the two U-washers on the button end of the axle shafts. 2. Pull the axle shafts outward.

Introduction Some 2010 Prius vehicles may experience rear brake squeak when backing up or moving forward during the ?rst few brake applications when the brakes are cold. An updated rear brake shim kit is available to reduce the likelihood of this condition occurring. Repair Procedure 1. Test drive the vehicle to con?rm the squeak is coming from the rear brakes. The condition occurs more frequently when backing up during light brake pedal application after cold soak. 2. Remove rear brake shims. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) 2010 Prius Repair Manual: Brake – Brake (Rear) Brake: Rear Brake: Removal 3. Clean the rear brake pad backing plates with a clean shop towel and apply a small amount of black disc brake grease to the backing plate of each rear brake pad. NOTE Make sure disc brake grease is not applied to the lining of the rear brake pads. 4. Install the No. 1 Anti-squeal shims. Install the No. 2 Anti-squeal shims. Figure 3. 5. Using the Variable Pin Wrench (SST 09960-10010), slowly rotate the caliper piston until the piston groove is positioned as shown in the illustration below. 6. Install new rear brake anti-squeal shims with brake pads into the rear caliper assemblies brackets. Refer to (TIS), 2010 Prius Repair Manual: Brake – Brake (Rear) Brake: Rear Brake: Installation NOTE • When installing the rear disc brake caliper assembly on the rear disc brake caliper mounting bracket, ensure the protrusion on the brake pad is centered in the caliper piston groove. • It is important to ensure the protrusion is not contacting the outer edges of the caliper piston groove. (both sides) 7. Road test the vehicle to con?rm the condition has been reduced.

During assembly, some wheel speed sensors may have been improperly installed and do not seal the hub assembly. Water may enter the hub assembly and damage the wheel bearing. In areas where road salt is used, the wheel bearings may corrode, which may cause the wheel to separate and fall off, increasing the risk of a crash. CORRECTIVE ACTION Inspect both rear ABS wheel speed sensors and their O-rings. If an ABS wheel speed sensor or O-ring is damaged, replace the damaged part and the hub bearing unit on that wheel. REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. 2. 3. 4. Raise the vehicle on a lift. Remove the rear wheels. Remove both rear ABS wheel speed sensors. Inspect the rear ABS wheel speed sensors and their O-rings. • If a rear ABS wheel speed sensor O-ring is damaged (cut, torn, pinched, or flattened), replace the O-ring and the corresponding rear hub bearing unit, then go to step 5. DAMAGED O-RINGS: O-ring is pinched. • If the rear ABS wheel speed sensor tip has any physical damage, remove the original sensor assembly, replace the corresponding rear hub bearing unit(s), and connect the new sensor’s wire harness. Then go to step 5. – Refer to page 18-34 (with disc brakes) or 18-36 (with drum brakes) of the 2006–07 Civic Service Manual, or – Online, enter keyword HUB, then select Rear Knuckle/Hub Bearing Unit Replacement from the list. O-ring is rolled out of the groove and flattened. -Refer to page 18-34 (with disc brakes) or 18-36 (with drum brakes) of the 2006–07 Civic Service Manual, or – Online, enter keyword HUB, then select Rear Knuckle/Hub Bearing Unit Replacement from the list. • If the rear ABS wheel speed sensors and their O-rings are OK, go to step 5. 5. Lubricate the ABS wheel speed sensor O-ring and the sensor hole in the knuckle with multi-purpose grease.
