FORD: 2005 Mustang 2004-2005 F-150 2005 Expedition, F-250, F-350 This article supersedes TSB 05-15-8 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature. The noise may be described as “ticks”, “taps”, “knocks”, or “thumps”. In some cases the noise may be a normal characteristic of these engines. In other cases the noise may require further investigation. Sorting out and defining the noise as reported by the customer is important to successfully diagnose and/or repair the condition. ACTION Before starting diagnosis, it is critical to determine the specific engine noise the customer is concerned with. The customer should be interviewed to get their detailed perception and description of the noise, and to determine if the noise occurs at idle or above idle speed, and if the engine is cold, hot, or both. Attempt to duplicate the noise, and determine the source of the symptom. Refer to the following Service Procedure to help determine the source of the noise and if a repair is needed. Check horn fuse 6 in the Power Distribution Center and fuse 7 in the Junction Block. If fuse is blown refer to FUSE BLOWN. If fuse is OK, refer to FUSE OK. Fuse Blown 1. Verify condition of battery terminals and voltage, refer to Battery If battery connections and battery charge is OK proceed to Step 2. . Using a voltmeter, test for battery voltage at both sides of horn fuse 7. If voltage is
OK, on both sides of fuse, proceed to Fuse OK. If voltage is OK, on one side of fuse, the fuse is blown, proceed to Step 3. 3. Using a suitable ammeter in place of the fuse, test amperage draw of the horn circuit. If amperage draw is greater than 20 amps without the horn switch depressed, a grounded circuit exists between the fuse and the horn relay Proceed to Step 4. If amperage draw is greater than 20 amps with the horn switch depressed, a grounded circuit exists between the horn relay and the horn. Proceed to step Step 5. 4. Remove the horn relay from the Junction Block. If the amperage draw drops to 0 amps , the horn switch or circuit is shorted. If the amperage draw does not drop to 0 amps , repair short at the Junction Block.

Fault Idle would intermittently rev up to 4000 rpm. Car would also accelerate on its own up to around 3000 rpm when driven off. If clutch depressed during this time while driving, the engine would rev up to 4000 rpm.
Cause
The Ford EECV engine management system ECM requires reprogramming. Vehicles Rectification
At present the vehicle needs to be returned to a Ford dealer for the engine management ECM to be reprogrammed using dedicated equipment. It has been noted that affected Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97FB-12A650-ASA. Later Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97 -12A650-AFC. After the original Ford EECV engine management ECM has been reprogrammed, the Ford dealer should tag the Ford EECV ECM with the new part number
