DESCRIPTION WHEEL ALIGNMENT NOTE: Suspension components with rubber/urethane bushings should be tightened with the vehicle at normal ride height. It is important to have the springs supporting the weight of the vehicle when the fasteners are torqued. If springs are not at their normal ride position, vehicle ride comfort could be affected and premature bushing wear may occur. Wheel alignment involves the correct positioning of the wheels in relation to the vehicle. The positioning is accomplished through suspension and steering linkage adjustments. An alignment is considered essential for efficient steering, good directional stability and to minimize tire wear. The most important measurements of an alignment are caster, camber and toe. CAUTION: Never attempt to modify suspension or steering components by heating or bending. NOTE: Periodic lubrication of the front suspension/steering system components may be required. Rubber bushings must never be lubricated. Refer to LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE for the recommended maintenance schedule. OPERATION WHEEL ALIGNMENT CASTER is the forward or rearward tilt of the steering knuckle from vertical. Tilting the top of the knuckle forward provides negative caster. Tilting the top of the knuckle rearward provides positive caster. Positive caster promotes directional stability. This angle enables the front wheels to return to a straight ahead position after turns. See Fig. 1 CAMBER is the inward or outward tilt of the wheel relative to the center of the vehicle. Tilting the top of the wheel inward provides negative camber. Tilting the top of the wheel outward provides positive camber. Incorrect camber will cause wear on the inside or outside edge of the tire. See Fig. 1 TOE is the difference between the leading inside edges and trailing inside edges of the front tires. Wheel toe position out of specification cause’s unstable steering, uneven tire wear and steering wheel off- center. The wheel toe position is the final front wheel alignment adjustment. See Fig. 1 THRUST ANGLE is the angle of the rear axle relative to the centerline of the vehicle. Incorrect thrust angle can cause off-center steering and excessive tire wear. This angle is not adjustable, damaged component(s) must be replaced to correct the thrust angle. See Fig. 1 STANDARD PROCEDURE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT

Use this bulletin If, based on preliminary diagnosis, the technician feels that an adjustment and/or alignment of the door(s) will correct the customer complaint or if the vehicle displays an issue where the following labor codes would be used: B4000/B4001 (Front Side Door Adjustment – LH & RH) and/or B4400/B4401 (Rear Side Door Up/Down Adjustment – LH & RH). Cause GM Engineering is attempting to determine the “root cause” for the concern with side door alignment. GM Engineering has a need to obtain information first-hand during the diagnosis and repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to “root cause” the customer’s concern and develop a field fix. 2003 Ford Windstar Camber and Caster Adjustment

All Vehicles 1. Using a 19 mm (0.76 inch) dowel, check the front sub-frame alignment. The dowel should slide directly through the front sub-frame and body without tilting. Vehicles Requiring Front Sub-Frame Alignment 2. Loosen the four bolts. 3. Align the front sub-frame to the correct position. The dowel should slide directly through the front sub-frame and body without tilting. Tighten the four bolts. 5. Recheck the camber and caster measurements. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Adjust the camber and caster as necessary. On a correctly aligned front sub-frame, the RH caster will lead the LH caster by 0.5 degrees. Vehicles Requiring Camber and Caster Adjustment 6. Remove the cowl top vent panel. 7. Center punch the four spot welds. 8. Loosen the nuts. 9. CAUTION: Do not cut deeper than necessary to remove the alignment plate. Using the special tool, remove the four spot welds. 10. Remove the nuts and the alignment elate. 11. Prepare the shock tower and alignment plate surfaces. Remove any burrs. Clean and paint any exposed metal. 12. Position the alignment plate. Loosely install the nuts. 13. Adjust the camber and caster. 14. Tighten the nuts. 15. Check the alignment settings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Readjust the camber and caster as necessary. 16. CAUTION: Do not drill deeper than 9.6 mm (0.38 inch) into the shock tower. Drill three 3.2 mm (0.12 inch) holes through the alignment plate and shock tower. Clean and paint any exposed metal. 17. Install three pop rivets. Use 3.2 mm (0.12 inch) diameter x 6.4 mm (0.25 inch) grip range steel pop rivets. 18. Install the cowl top vent panel.

PRE-ALIGNMENT CHECKS Ensure steering wheel is centered and front wheels are in straight-ahead position (to correct, shorten one tie rod adjusting sleeve and lengthen the opposite sleeve in equal amounts). Ensure none of the following conditions exist: Incorrect vehicle ride height (see RIDE HEIGHT ). Incorrect tire pressure, mismatched tires (differing size or type), excessive tire runout, unbalanced tire and wheel assemblies, loose wheel bearings, or loose wheel lug nuts. Loose or worn steering linkage/suspension components, or excessive play in steering gear box. CAMBER & CASTER ADJUSTMENT “C”, “G” & “K” Series Except 1999 Sierra & Silverado C1500 & C2500 (Caster Adjustment) 1. Check frame angle. See “C”, “G”, “K” & “P” (FRAME ANGLE) . If corrected caster is not within specification, remove frame bracket slots. See “C”, “G” & “K” SERIES (FRAME BRACKET SLOT REMOVAL) . Reset caster by loosening nut on end of each cam bolt securing upper control arm to frame brackets. See Fig. 18 . 2. Rotate cam bolts until caster is within specification. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS table. Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
