Manual locking hubs engage and disengage front wheels from axle shafts on 4WD vehicles. These hubs are are optional. When hubs are engaged in LOCK position, wheels and axle shafts rotate together. When hubs are disengaged or unlocked in FREE position, front wheels free-wheel on hub bearings. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION MANUAL LOCKING HUB Removal 1) Position locking hub in FREE position. Remove cover-to- body retaining bolts. Remove cover assembly and gasket. 2) Remove snap ring from drive axle. Remove body-to-hub retaining bolts. Remove body and gasket. See Fig. 1. CAUTION: Lubricate sliding surfaces with multipurpose grease, but DO NOT pack hub with grease.

Removal (Bronco & F150) 1. Using Torx Bit (T-25), remove 5 bolts from cap assembly. Remove cap assembly. See Fig. 5 . DO NOT drop spring, ball bearing, bearing race or spring retainer. 2. Remove rubber sealing ring and seal bridge retainer. Remove retainer ring by closing ends with needle nose pliers while pulling hub lock from wheel hub. 3. If wheel hub and spindle are to be removed, remove “C” washer from stub shaft groove. Remove splined spacer from axle shaft. Remove wheel bearing lock nuts and lock washer. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUBS MANUAL LOCKING HUBS Removal 3. Using magnet, remove locking key from spindle keyway. It may be necessary to rotate adjusting nut slightly to relieve pressure for locking key removal. Loosen adjusting nut with 2 3/8″ Hex Socket (T70T- 4252-B). 4. Tighten adjusting nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 N.m) while turning hub back and forth to seat bearings. Spin hub and back off adjusting nut 90 degrees. Retighten adjusting nut to 16 INCH lbs. (1.8 N.m). 5. Align nearest hole in adjusting nut with center of spindle keyway slot. If necessary, advance nut to next lug. Install locking key in spindle keyway under adjusting nut. Install 2 thrust washers. Press plastic cam assembly onto adjusting nut while lining up key in fixed cam with spindle keyway.

Manual Locking Hubs, Ranger 1. Raise the vehicle and install safety stands. 2. Remove the lug nuts (1012) and wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Section 04-04. 3. Remove the retainer washers from the wheel hub bolt nut studs and the manual locking hub assembly from the front wheel spindle (3105). 4. Remove the snap ring from the end of the shaft of the front wheel spindle. Manual Locking Hub, Exploded View, Ranger 5. Remove the axle shaft spacers. 6. Remove the outer wheel bearing locknut from the front wheel spindlej using Hub Locknut Wrench Prong T83T-1197-B. Engage tool tabs into locknut slots. 7. Remove locknut washer from front wheel spindle. 8. Loosen the inner wheel bearing locknut. Engage tool tab in locknut slots. Make sure tool is centered over the locknut pin. 9. Tighten the inner locknut to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) while turning the rotor in the opposite direction to seat wheel bearings. 10. NOTE: If necessary, tighten inner locknut slightly to align the locknut pin with lockwasher hole. Spin the rotor and back off the inner locknut one-quarter turn. Retighten the inner locknut to 1.8 Nm (16 lb-in). 11. Install the lockwasher on the front wheel spindle. 12. Install the outer wheel bearing locknut using locknut wrench. Tighten locknut to 203 Nm (150 lb-ft). 13. Check the end play of the wheel and tire assembly on the front wheel spindle. Final end play should be 0.00-0.08mm (0.000-0.003 inch). The maximum torque to rotate the hub is 2.8 Nm (25 lb-in). 14. Install the axle shaft spacer. 15. Clip the snap ring onto the end of the shaft of the front wheel spindle. 16. Install the manual hub assembly over the front wheel spindle. Install the retainer washers. 17. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Install and tighten lug nuts to 135 Nm (100 lb-ft). DESCRIPTION Locking hubs provide a means of engagement of front wheels on vehicles with front driving axle. When hub is set in a dis- engaged position, front wheels are automatically locked to axle shaft the moment forward torque is applied to front axle. When hub is set in an engaged position, front wheels are lock- ed to axle shafts at all times. IDENTIFICATION All Warn Hubs employ BRASS control knobs to engage and disengage locking mechanism. Model number of hub is stamped into recesses of control knob. Model numbers for Warn Selective Lock-O-Matic hubs are as follows
