Power Door Locks Inoperative Diagnostic Instructions • Perform the Diagnostic System Check – Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure. • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach. • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category. Diagnostic Fault Information Circuit Switch Side Supply Voltage Relay Door Lock/Unlock Signal Door Latch Control Driver Door Lock Switch Ground Passenger Front Door Lock Switch Ground BCM Ground 1. Door Lock Malfunction 2. Door Lock Switch Malfunction Circuit/System Description The DR LCK fuse supplies battery positive voltage to the body control module BCM for the door lock system. The BCM supplies and monitors a reference voltage to the door lock switch through the door lock switch lock/unlock signal circuit. The door lock switch also receives a constant ground source. If a door lock switch is placed in the lock position, the reference voltage is taken directly to ground and the BCM senses 0.0 volts on the signal circuit. If a door lock switch is placed in the unlock position, the reference voltage is taken to ground through a 1.5k ohm resistor that is internal to the door lock switches and senses approximately 2.9 volts on the signal circuit. This is how the BCM determines what portion of the door lock switch was activated. The BCM, upon receipt of a door lock switch lock or unlock signal, will switch the appropriate door lock actuator control circuits to battery positive voltage. The opposing side of the door lock actuators are connected to ground internally within the BCM through the other door lock actuator control circuit and the doors will lock or unlock appropriately. Vehicles without keyless entry have two internal drivers in the BCM to control the door lock actuators. All door lock and all door unlock. Vehicles equipped with keyless entry have three internal drivers in the BCM. Driver door unlock, passenger door unlock and all door lock. This is done to isolate the driver door lock actuator so it can be unlocked by itself using the keyless entry transmitter.

POWER DOOR LOCKS Power door lock system allows all doors to be locked or unlocked using either front door lock switch. All doors can be mechanically locked or unlocked using respective locking knobs or from outside of vehicle using key. Driver’s or passenger’s door can also be unlocked by actuating inside door handle. On Sebring Convertible, trunk can be unlocked using switch inside vehicle. All 4-door models are equipped with child protection locks on rear doors. Lever is located on inside edge of door, near latch. Moving lever to engage lock will allow rear door to only be opened using outside door handle. On models with anti-theft system, power door lock system is integrated into anti-theft system. See ANTI- THEFT SYSTEMS – SEBRING CONVERTIBLE, SEBRING SEDAN & STRATUS SEDAN article. Locking or unlocking door with key will arm or disarm anti-theft system (if equipped), and cancel or activate illuminated entry feature. An optional central locking system is also a part of anti-theft system. Turning key in driver’s door to unlock position one time will unlock driver’s door. Unlocking passenger’s door with a key or turning driver’s door lock to unlock position 2 times within 5 seconds will unlock all doors. All models are equipped with a door lock inhibit function. Body Control Module (BCM) will ignore command to lock power door locks with ignition switch in ON position and driver’s door open. When door is closed or ignition key is removed, BCM will lock all door locks. All models are also equipped with automatic door locks. Doors will lock automatically when all doors are closed, vehicle speed exceeds 14-16 MPH and Throttle Position (TP) sensor is greater than 8-12 degrees. This feature can be enabled or disabled. If door lock switch is pressed for longer than eight consecutive seconds, BCM will disable door lock relay. Power latches are equipped with a thermal protection system which prevents latches from burning out.

POWER DOOR LOCKS All doors can be locked and unlocked from either front door using control switch or door key. When you unlock driver’s door with door key, if you turn key once, only driver’s door will unlock. If you turn key twice within 3 seconds, all doors will unlock. KEY CONFINEMENT PREVENTION SYSTEM If driver leaves key in ignition, opens door, then tries to lock doors using control switch (on door panel), system will not allow doors to be locked. This prevents key from being locked inside vehicle. OPERATION POWER DOOR LOCKS Door Key Switch (Door Key Lock & Unlock Switch) This switch is part of door key cylinder. When lock cylinder is turned to LOCK or UNLOCK position, contacts inside this switch close. Door Lock Control Switch All doors can be locked and unlocked using control switch on driver’s side or passenger’s side. Door Lock Motors Each door contains a door lock motor (an electric actuator) that locks and unlocks door. Door lock motor assembly contains a door unlock detection switch and a door open detection switch.
