1992 Suzuki Swift VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

NOTE: Samurai & Sidekick 1) Remove rocker cover. Rotate crankshaft until zero degree (TDC) timing mark of timing belt cover is in line with timing mark on crankshaft pulley. 2) Cylinder No. 1 should be at TDC on compression stroke. Remove distributor cap, and ensure rotor is pointed upward at distributor hold-down bolt and to No. 1 terminal of distributor cap. If not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. 3) Measure valve clearance between adjustment screw and valve stem using thickness gauge. Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 2 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 3. 4) Turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 3 and 4 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 2 and 4. Ensure clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. 5) If clearance adjustment is necessary, loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw. After adjusting clearance, tighten adjusting Swift DOHC uses hydraulic lifters. Adjustment is not required. screw lock nut to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 N.m) on Samurai or 90-108 INCH lbs. If not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. 3) Measure valve clearance between adjustment screw and valve stem using thickness gauge. Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 2 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 3. Turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees). During “adaptation” with ignition switched on and the engine not running, the Motronic ECM “learns” the closed throttle position (CTP), wide open throttle (WOT) and other positions of the throttle valve control module, and a characteristic curve of the relationship between Throttle Position (TP) sensor -G69- and angle sensor for throttle drive -G187-. Adaptation must be performed if: – The voltage supply is interrupted – The throttle valve control module is removed and installed – The throttle valve control module is replaced – If when installing another engine another throttle valve control module is installed Special tools and equipment VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG1551/3 adapter cable Test conditions – No malfunctions stored in DTC memory. – Battery voltage: min. 11.5 volts – All electrical consumers switched off (radiator coolant fan must not run during test) – A/C switched off – Throttle valve in closed throttle position; if necessary adjust accelerator pedal cable – Cruise control adjustment OK Work sequence – Connect VAG1551 or VAG1552 scan tool and press buttons -0- and -1- to insert “Engine Electronics” address word 01 (with ignition switched on; engine not running). NOTE: If DTC P1519 is stored at same time as DTC P0505, troubleshoot DTC P1519 first, then recheck for DTC P0505. 1. Start the engine. Hold the engine at 3,000 rpm with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on. 2. Check the engine speed at idle with no-load conditions: headlights, blower fan, rear window defogger, radiator fan, and air conditioner off. Is the engine running at 730+/-50 rpm? YES – Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time.? NO – If the idle speed is less than 680 rpm, go to step 3; if it’s 780 rpm or higher, go to step 4. 3. Disconnect the idle air control (IAC) valve 3P connector. Does the engine speed increase or fluctuate? YES – Adjust the idle speed. If the idle will not adjust properly, clean the passage in the throttle body, and then adjust the idle.? NO – Replace the IAC valve.? 4. Turn the ignition switch OFF. 5. Remove the intake air duct from the throttle body. 6. Start the engine and let it idle. 7. Put your finger on the lower port (A) in the throttle body. Does the engine speed drop below 780 rpm? YES – Adjust the idle speed. If the idle will not adjust properly, replace the IAC valve, and then adjust the idle.? NO – With the throttle valve completely closed, check for vacuum leaks, and repair as necessary.?

NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used; no valve adjustment is required. When valve and/or valve seat is machined, valve clearance is reduced and may cause improper valve operation. Different length push rods are available for correcting clearance. Valve lifter must be collapsed to check valve clearance. 1. With valve cover removed, position piston No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Completely collapse cylinder No. 1 intake valve lifter and hold valve lifter collapsed. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem. 2. Clearance should be within specification. Refer to COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE table. Replace push rod, if necessary, to obtain correct clearance. 3. Position crankshaft as specified. See, in this article, VALVE CLEARANCE CHECKING SEQUENCE table, and check appropriate valves. Replace push rods if clearance is not within specification. 4. If push rod(s) is replaced, ensure corresponding cylinder piston is below TDC. It will be necessary to loosen or remove rocker arm to replace push rod. The idle stabilizer valve, which is located in the bypass pipe, maintains the appropriate idle speed for various engine operating conditions. The idle stabilizer valve consists of a set of electrical windings, the valve plunger, a return spring and valve housing. The Digifant II control unit supplies the stabilizer valve with approx. 400 mA of current at idle. As current is passed through the valve windings the magnetic field 1989 Volkswagen Jetta L4-1781cc 1.8L SOHC (RV, PF) which is created regulates the position of the valve plunger. If the idle speed varies from the correct specification the Digifant II control unit increases or decreases current to the idle stabilizer in order to provide the necessary valve opening for idle stabilization.
