2008 Lincoln MKZ INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) Removal

Removal All vehicles 1. If installing a new instrument cluster (IC), upload the module configuration to the scan tool. 2. Tilt the steering column to the lowest position. MKZ 3. Remove the 2 instrument cluster (IC) finish panel screws and the instrument cluster (IC) finish panel. 4. Remove the 2 screws and the instrument cluster (IC). Disconnect the electrical connector. Fusion, Milan 5. NOTE: The instrument cluster (IC) finish panel is held in place by spring clips located on the finish panel. Remove the instrument cluster (IC) finish panel. 6. NOTE: The top of the instrument cluster (IC) is a snap fit to the instrument panel. To ease removal of the instrument cluster (IC) insert a suitable tool between the instrument panel and the top of the instrument cluster (IC) and use a slight outward movement until the top of the instrument cluster (IC) is released. The instrument cluster (IC) can now be rotated outwards. Remove the 2 screws and the instrument cluster (IC). Disconnect the electrical connector. Installation MKZ 1. Position the instrument cluster (IC) in the instrument panel. Connect the electrical connector. Install the 2 screws. 2. Position the instrument cluster (IC) finish panel and install the 2 screws. Fusion, Milan 3. NOTE: Position the bottom portion of the instrument cluster (IC) on the instrument panel locator pins first then rotate the top of the instrument cluster (IC) into position. Position the instrument cluster (IC) in the instrument panel. Connect the electrical connector. Install the 2 screws. 4. Install the instrument cluster (IC) finish panel. All vehicles 5. If a new instrument cluster (IC) was installed, download the instrument cluster (IC) configuration information from the scan tool into the new instrument cluster (IC). 6. NOTE: If a new instrument cluster (IC) is installed, updated, or re-configured, the instrument cluster and the powertrain control module (PCM) require a parameter reset to allow the instrument cluster (IC) and the PCM to recognize each other. Failure to carry out the parameter reset to the instrument cluster (IC) and the PCM may result in a no start condition. If a new instrument cluster (IC) was installed, updated or reconfigured, carry out the parameter reset procedure. 7. NOTE: The vehicles integrated keys (or standard passive anti-theft system [PATS] keys) must be programmed to the new instrument cluster. If a new instrument cluster (IC) was installed, program the integrated keys.

NOTE: Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the trim from the right and left front door sills. Remove the trim from the left and right cowl side inner panels. Remove the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel. See: Steering Column Opening Cover and Knee Blocker Replacement Remove the two screws that secure the inside hood latch release handle to the instrument panel lower reinforcement and lower the release handle to the floor. Disconnect the driver side airbag module wire harness connector from the instrument panel wire harness at the instrument panel lower reinforcement. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the overdrive lockout switch wire harness connector from the instrument panel wire harness near the instrument panel lower reinforcement. Remove the steering column from the vehicle, but do not remove the driver side airbag module, the steering wheel, or the switches from the steering column. Be certain that the steering wheel is locked and secured from rotation to prevent the loss of clockspring centering. Refer to Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Column/Service and Repair. See: Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Column/Service and Repair From under the driver side of the instrument panel, perform the following: a. Remove the screw from the center of the headlamp and dash to instrument panel bulkhead wire harness connector and disconnect the connector. b. Disconnect the two body wire harness connectors from the two instrument panel wire harness connectors that are secured to the outboard side of the instrument panel bulkhead connector. c. Disconnect the three wire harness connectors (one from the body wire harness, and two from the headlamp and dash wire harness) from the three junction block connector receptacles located closest to the dash panel. d. Unsnap the plastic retainer clip that secures the park brake release linkage rod to the lever on the back side of the park brake release handle and disengage the linkage rod end from the lever on the handle. e. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the stop lamp switch connector receptacle. f. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector located near the left end of the heater-A/C housing. Remove the center support bracket from the instrument panel. See: Instrument Panel Center Support Bracket Replacement Remove the screw that secures the instrument panel wire harness ground eyelets to the left side of the Airbag Control Module (ACM) mount on the floor panel transmission tunnel. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the ACM connector receptacle. Remove the glove box from the instrument panel. Refer to Body and Frame/Interior Trim/Glove Compartment/Service and Repair. See: Glove Compartment/Service and Repair Reaching through the instrument panel glove box opening, perform the following: a. Disconnect the two halves of the radio antenna coaxial cable connector near the center of the lower instrument panel glove box opening. b. Disengage the antenna half of the radio antenna coaxial cable from the retainer clip near the outboard side of the lower instrument panel glove box opening. c. Disconnect the blower motor wire harness connector located near the heater-A/C housing support brace on the inboard side of the instrument panel glove box opening. From under the passenger side of the instrument panel, perform the following: a. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the two instrument panel wire harness connectors from the Infinity speaker amplifier connector receptacles on the right cowl side inner panel. b. If the actual vehicle mileage cannot be verified, the service center will supply a speedometer/odometer module with the odometer display preset to zero (“0″) miles and the service odometer segment (“s”) illuminated in the vicinity of the odometer display. In addition, an odometer mileage sticker is supplied with the replacement odometer. This sticker must display the estimated vehicle mileage and is to be affixed to the driver’s door. 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Position vehicle on a flat surface to prevent movement when shift control selector lever is out of position. 3. Turn ignition switch to unlock shift control selector lever and move lever down from front of EIC. 4. Tilt steering column down as far as possible. 5. Remove RH and LH instrument panel moulding (046A63) by pulling upward to unsnap two clips. Disconnect electrical connectors. Set instrument panel mouldings aside. 6. Remove five Torx® screws below instrument cluster that retain instrument panel finish panel (044D70) applique. 7. Unsnap instrument panel finish panel applique along top and pull instrument panel finish panel applique away from instrument panel (04320). 8. Disconnect switch assembly electrical connectors. Set instrument panel finish panel applique aside. 9. Remove three screws from bottom of instrument panel steering column cover (04459) (two screws on RH side, one screw on LH side). 10. Lift up top section of instrument panel steering column cover to undo a clip located on LH side near steering wheel (3600) . Separate upper section of steering wheel from side section near ignition switch . Slip upper section off shift control selector lever and housing (7210). 11. Remove four Torx® screws retaining instrument cluster to instrument panel . 12. Place clean, soft cloth on steering column shroud (3530) to prevent scratching front surface of instrument cluster as it is removed. 13. Tilt top of instrument cluster slightly toward rear of vehicle. Undo two snaps beneath instrument cluster retaining transmission control selector indicator in instrument cluster (column shift only). 14. Reach around to back of instrument cluster to unplug three connectors (two connectors in middle, and one on LH side). NOTE: The connectors have locking tabs that must be pressed in to unplug the connection. 15. Loosen two clips retaining transmission control selector indicator to instrument cluster (column shift only). 16. Pull transmission control selector indicator down and to the right to position it out of way (column shift only). 17. Push bottom of instrument cluster into instrument panel cavity. Tilt top of instrument cluster toward rear of vehicle. Pull instrument cluster up and out of cavity. 18. To install, reverse Removal procedure. NOTE: Fuel computer internal fuel economy values will be re-initialized after battery disconnect. Customer may notice a change in AVE ECON and DTE calculations from this. Accuracy will improve gradually as new fuel economy history is developed. This may take about 525 miles.

PINPOINT TEST B: INCORRECT FUEL GAUGE INDICATION — SINGLE FUEL TANK NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector. NOTE: The fuel pump module may also be called the fuel tank unit or fuel level sender. B1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS Ignition OFF. Check for recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are any instrument cluster DTCs recorded? Test Step B2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FUEL GAUGE ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Active Command. Select the instrument cluster active command. Trigger, monitor, and scroll the fuel gauge level at 0%, 50%, and 100%. Does the fuel gauge display below E with 0%, half with 50%, and full stop with 100%? B3 CHECK THE FUEL PUMP MODULE FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Fuel Pump ModuleC434 or C4033. Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the fuel pump module as follows: Connector-Pin C434-2 C4033-5 Ignition ON. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Self-Test. Wait one minute. NOTE: Once set, it is normal for DTC B1201 to be present when carrying out this test step and should be ignored. Clear the instrument cluster DTCs. Repeat the instrument cluster self-test. Is DTC B1204 retrieved? B4 CHECK CIRCUITS 29 (YE/WH) AND 396 (BK/OG) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Ignition OFF. Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220b-10, circuit 29 (YE/WH), harness side and ground; and between the instrument cluster C220b-8, circuit 396 (BK/OG), harness side and ground. Circuit Connector-Pin 29 (YE/WH) 29 (YE/WH) Circuit C434-4 396 (BK/OG) C4033-8 396 (BK/OG) Is any voltage present? B5 CHECK CIRCUITS 29 (YE/WH) AND 396 (BK/OG) FOR AN OPEN Ignition OFF. Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster, harness side and the fuel pump module, harness side as follows: Instrument Cluster Connector-Pin C220b-10 C220b-10 C220b-8 C220b-8 Circuit Fuel Pump Module Connector-Pin 29 (YE/WH) 29 (YE/WH) 396 (BK/OG) 396 (BK/OG) C434-2 C4033-5 C434-4 C4033-8 Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? B6 CHECK THE FUEL PUMP MODULE FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Fuel Pump Module C434 or C4033. Ignition ON. Wait one minute. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster Self-Test. NOTE: Once set, it is normal for DTC B1204 to be present when carrying out this test step and should be ignored. Clear the instrument cluster DTCs. Repeat the instrument cluster self-test. Is DTC B1201 retrieved? B7 CHECK CIRCUIT 29 (YE/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220b. Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b-10, circuit 29 (YE/WH), harness side and ground.
