Kia Sorento/ Kia Sedona Throttle Position Sensor W/3.5L Engine

Description This bulletin provides information related to the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for Sorento & Sedona models. Some Sorento & Sedona vehicles may exhibit diagnostic trouble codes P0121 and/or P1121. This condition mainly occurs in high ambient or desert areas, and can be related to the occasional increase in contact resistance due to excessive wear of the inner elements of the TP sensor. This bulletin describes the proper service and adjustment procedure for replacing the TP Sensor. – Service Procedure Replacement Procedure: 1. Turn ignition OFF. Remove engine cover and disconnect electrical connector from TP Sensor. 2. Remove two (2) retaining screws from TP Sensor and remove from throttle body. 3. Install new TP Sensor to throttle body. Install retaining screws and hand tighten lightly. Adjustment will be required. Re-install electrical connector to TP Sensor.

Power Door Locks Inoperative Diagnostic Instructions • Perform the Diagnostic System Check – Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure. • Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach. • Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category. Diagnostic Fault Information Circuit Switch Side Supply Voltage Relay Door Lock/Unlock Signal Door Latch Control Driver Door Lock Switch Ground Passenger Front Door Lock Switch Ground BCM Ground 1. Door Lock Malfunction 2. Door Lock Switch Malfunction Circuit/System Description The DR LCK fuse supplies battery positive voltage to the body control module BCM for the door lock system. The BCM supplies and monitors a reference voltage to the door lock switch through the door lock switch lock/unlock signal circuit. The door lock switch also receives a constant ground source. If a door lock switch is placed in the lock position, the reference voltage is taken directly to ground and the BCM senses 0.0 volts on the signal circuit. If a door lock switch is placed in the unlock position, the reference voltage is taken to ground through a 1.5k ohm resistor that is internal to the door lock switches and senses approximately 2.9 volts on the signal circuit. This is how the BCM determines what portion of the door lock switch was activated. The BCM, upon receipt of a door lock switch lock or unlock signal, will switch the appropriate door lock actuator control circuits to battery positive voltage. The opposing side of the door lock actuators are connected to ground internally within the BCM through the other door lock actuator control circuit and the doors will lock or unlock appropriately. Vehicles without keyless entry have two internal drivers in the BCM to control the door lock actuators. All door lock and all door unlock. Vehicles equipped with keyless entry have three internal drivers in the BCM. Driver door unlock, passenger door unlock and all door lock. This is done to isolate the driver door lock actuator so it can be unlocked by itself using the keyless entry transmitter.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is not a part of the Engine Control Module (ECM), but will flash the “HOLD” light and send a “Mil Request Signal” to the ECM when the TCM has stored a DTC. This means the ECM will illuminate the Malfunction Indicator “CHECK ENGINE” light indicating a DTC has been stored. When retrieved, the DTC “P1624 – MIL Request Signal” will be displayed. This DTC indicates that a code has been stored in the TCM. To retrieve TCM DTC’s, exit out of the Engine DTC’s Screen, then select “Transmission” to read ECAT DTC’s.

Powertrain DTC Summaries – OBD II FAULT DESCRIPTION MONITORING CONDITIONS CHECK ENGINE MIL (CK ENG) DEFAULT ACTION POSSIBLE CAUSES DTC Diagnostic Trouble Code. SYS The powertrain system with which the DTC is associated – EMS, TRANS, ABS/TC (DSC). DTC retrieval tools: OBD II – indicates that the DTC is an OBD II code and can be accessed via a generic scan tool or WDS. JAG – indicates that the DTC is not an OBD II code and is accessed only via WDS. Fault description. “DIAGNOSTIC MONITOR DRIVE CYCLE” for the particular DTC. Operate the vehicle as described to check for a reoccurrence of the DTC. Refer to pages 4 – 7. Use WDS Datalogger or Scan Tool to monitor specified engine parameter(s). 1 2 N OTHER Driver Warnings: N None R RED MIL / Message or Powertrain Warning Indicator A AMBER MIL / Message or Powertrain Warning Indicator C Charge indicator Control Module default action: Logged – DTC stored in ECM memory buffer; Flagged – DTC stored in ECM memory / CHECK ENGINE MIL activated. CM PIN ECM (SYS – EMS) / TCM (SYS – TRANS) Connector pin number(s) Possible causes are listed in the order of diagnostic checking. HIGH VOLTAGE – High voltage can be either sensor supply voltage (5 volts) or B+ voltage. 1 TRIP – indicates that the CHECK ENGINE MIL is activated by a fault occurring during ONE “TRIP”. 2 TRIPS – indicates that the CHECK ENGINE MIL is activated by a fault occurring during TWO CONSECUTIVE “TRIPS”. NO – indicates that the CHECK ENGINE MIL is not activated. OBD SYSTEM READINESS – ENGINE MANAGEMENT If DTC P1000 is flagged after DTCs have been cleared, all engine management OBD diagnostic monitor drive cycles HAVE NOT BEEN COMPLETED. If DTC P1111 is flagged after DTCs have been cleared, all engine management OBD diagnostic monitor drive cycles HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. OBD SYSTEM READINESS – TRANSMISSION Use WDS Datalogger “TOTAL NUMBER OF DTC SET” to determine if transmission OBD monitoring has been completed. Refer to page 7. OBD DIAGNOSTIC MONITORS The Engine Management and Transmission Control systems are continuously checked during vehicle operation by the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) on-board diagnostic (OBD) facilities. Powertrain OBD incorporates six diagnostic monitors. Each monitor has an associated group of DTCs. The diagnostic monitors will complete the diagnostic test(s) if a specified service “drive cycle” is carried out. The climate control unit has a self-diagnostic function. To run the self-diagnostic function, do the following. NOTE: Before troubleshooting the climate control system, refer to B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A Troubleshooting , and the communication circuit self- diagnostic function test. 1. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and then ON (II). 2. Press and hold the OFF button. While holding the OFF button, press the recirculation button five times within 10 seconds . Release the OFF button, then the self-diagnostic begins. Wait for about one minute for the self- diagnostic to complete. NOTE: The blower motor will run various speeds regardless of what the panel is displaying. If there is any problem in the system, the temperature indicator will light up the segment (A through Ohm) corresponding to the error. The temperature indicator will then alternate every second between displaying “88″ (all segments lit) and the error code segment (A through Q). To determine the meaning of the DTC, refer to checking for DTCs.
