For 2003 and 2004 Applied Vehicles: When you perform Procedure C (ECM Reprogramming), go to NTB06-051a for reprogramming information. You will still need to perform all other parts of this bulletin on 2003 and 2004 Applied Vehicles. INTRODUCTION Nissan has determined that some 2002-2003 model year Altima and 2002-2004 model year Sentra vehicles equipped with the 2.5 liter engine have defects that relate to motor vehicle safety. For 2002-2003 model year Altimas, there is a possibility that the exhaust pipe hanger pin may catch debris from the road that could be ignited by contact with the catalytic converter and cause a fire. In addition, for 2002-2003 model year Altimas and 2002-2004 model year Sentras, there is a possibility that certain engine operating conditions may cause damage to the pre-catalyst. Material from inside a damaged pre-catalyst could enter the engine and result in increased oil consumption. If the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level, and the driver continues to operate the vehicle ignoring noticeable engine noise, engine damage may occur which could result in a fire.

SERVICE INFORMATION If a 2002 Altima, with manual (non-automatic) A/C, exhibits the following symptoms: • • • • No heat from vents Always discharges cold air A/C does not cool Temperature cannot be adjusted, Check to see if the air mix gear door drive gear fell off. (See Figure 1). If the gear is missing, find it (hopefully it’s still on the floor). Then re-install it using the Service Procedure on Page 2. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Remove the following components; • • • cluster lid “C” (HVAC control surround trim) fuse box cover driver’s side instrument panel lower cover (attached with 2 screws). 2. Remove the screw from the center of the cable operated gear (see Figure 2). 3. Locate the small (about 1” dia.) white air mix door gear. Hopefully it is still on the floor. NOTE: If you cannot find the old air mix door gear, order a new gear. Refer to the Parts Information section of this bulletin. 4. To see how it is supposed to fit, temporarily install the gear into the air mix door shaft (see Figure 3). 5. Remove the gear, thoroughly clean the gear shaft of any grease, and apply the glue. See Figure 4.

If an applied vehicle exhibits one or more of the following symptoms: • • • MIL “ON” with DTC P0340 (Camshaft Position Sensor) stored in Self Diagnosis results, Engine stumbles momentarily during cruise condition, Engine stops running at idle, The cause of this incident may be the ignition coils. A new resistor assembly (located inside the ignition coil tube) is available to repair the described symptoms, if they should occur. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Verify that the vehicle has one or more of the symptoms listed above in the Service Information. 2. Remove all four ignition coils. Refer to the appropriate 2002 Service Manual for removal procedure of the ignition coils (page EM-26 for Altima, page EM-106 for Sentra). 3. Install the new resistor assembly in all four ignition coil tubes as follows: A. Pull the rubber boot away from the ignition coil. Then, twist and pull the ignition coil tube from the ignition coil to separate them (see Figure 1). Rubber boot Tube Ignition coil Figure 1 TP010651 B. Remove the spring from the ignition coil tube and discard. Insert the new resistor assembly into the ignition coil tube exactly as shown in Figure 2 below. C. Assemble the ignition coil tube to the ignition coil. • Rotate the tube while pressing onto the coil. • A “pop” sound will be heard when the rubber boot is seated correctly to the ignition coil. • Ensure there are no gaps and bulges between the coil body and the rubber boot (see Figure 3).

IF YOU CONFIRM • After a ‘cold soak’,* the engine cranks (turns with starter), but does not start. *Cold soak: Engine has cooled down to ambient (outside) temperature, regardless of summer or winter seasonal variations. • The engine may start if it is cranked for an extended period (more than 5 seconds) or if the throttle is opened during cranking. • After starting and operating for a few minutes the engine runs normally. ACTIONS • Replace the starter motor. • Add 1 can of Nissan Fuel System Cleaner into the fuel tank. • Perform ECM Part Number Check to see if the vehicle you are working on needs ECM Reprogramming. • Perform ECM Reprogramming, if needed. SERVICE PROCEDURE Replace Starter, Add Cleaner 1. Replace the starter motor. • Use the part number from the Parts Information section of this bulletin. • Refer to section SC, “STARTING SYSTEM, Removal and Installation” in the applicable Nissan Electronic Service Manual (ESM). 2. Add one full can of Nissan In-Tank Fuel System Cleaner to the fuel. NOTE: If the fuel tank is less than ¾ full, instruct the customer to fill the tank as soon as it is convenient after the repair. Driving with the Cleaner installed and low fuel level will not harm the fuel system or engine, but will reduce the effectiveness of the cleaning process. 3. Continue to ECM Part Number Check (next page).
