PROCEDURE 1. Test drive the vehicle. Use Chassis Ears® to determine if the noise is coming from the upper or lower control arm (or both). a. If the noise is NOT coming from a rear control arm, diagnose and repair/replace the appropriate component(s), as necessary. Do not continue with this bulletin procedure. b. If the noise is coming from a rear control arm, continue with this bulletin procedure. 2. On the side of the vehicle where the noise occurs, determine whether the noise occurs at the upper or the lower control arm. Use the new parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin. Refer to Group 34 in the appropriate service manual. U.S. Vehicles: If the noise occurs at the lower control arm, replace the lower control arm outer (pillow ball) bushing. If the noise occurs at the upper control arm, replace the upper control arm assembly. a. Lower Arm Bushing (Outer Pillow Ball Bushing) Replacement Procedure: Use special tools MB990969?01, MB990971?01, and MB990996?01 to drive out and press?fit the bushing. After press?fitting, the space between the edges of the bushing outer sleeve and the lower arm should be 3 mm (0.12 inch). MB990957?01: Lower Arm Bushing Remover and Installer (includes MB990969?01 and MB990971?01) MB990996?01: Lower Arm Bushing Arbor NOTE: These special tools will be available from SPX/OTC in early August. (They will not be Essential Tools.) Canada Vehicles: ? If the noise occurs at the lower control arm, replace the lower control arm assembly. ? If the noise occurs at the upper control arm, replace the upper control arm assembly. 3. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the squeaking noise is eliminated.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. 2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels. 3. Remove the shock module yoke. Refer to Shock Module Yoke Replacement. 4. Remove the stabilizer shaft link lower retaining nut. 5. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm. 6. Remove the ABS wire harness from the lower control arm. 7. Remove the lower control arm to steering knuckle nut. 8. Using the J 43631 , separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle. See Special Tools. IMPORTANT: Will need to raise the power steering gear to have clearance when removing the rear lower control arm to frame retaining bolt. 9. Loosen the power steering gear retaining bolts and raise the power steering gear. 10. Remove the lower control arm to cradle nuts. 11. Remove the lower control arm to cradle bolts. 12. Remove the lower control arm by lowering the lower control arm at the frame and moving the ball stud upwards. Installation Procedure

Replacing Both Control Arm Brackets Caution! If a bracket is replaced, a new bracket must also be installed on the other side. After installation, check freedom of movement of other components to control arm bracket. If necessary, bend back heat shield and cut panel. Remove engine underguard and if necessary heat shield on right. Remove reinforcement (cross). Remove reinforcement (plate). Punch-mark center of control arm. Composite parts of special tool 00 7 500. If necessary, remachine special tool 31 2 151 as per drawing. Detach bracket with special tool 00 7 500/31 2 151 from control arm. Caution! Never re-use a rubber mount pulled off from control arm. Rubber-coated inner sleeve is destroyed if pulled off dry. Caution! A control arm with pin shape (A) must be replaced! Only control arms with pin shape (B) may be fitted! Mark out measurement (A) at bottom at control arm pin. A=290.9 ± 1 mm Installation: Outer edge (B) of rubber mount must be flush with marked measurement (A). Caution! If the position of the rubber mount is not strictly adhered to, this will result in impaired vehicle handling and early rubber mount wear!

Inspection and Verification 1. Verify the customer’s concern by operating the climate control system to duplicate the condition. 2. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply: Visual Inspection Chart Loose, missing or damaged A/C compressor drive belt. Loose or disconnected A/C clutch. Loose, misrouted or damaged vacuum lines. Broken or leaking vacuum control motora Discharged A/C system. Broken or leaking refrigerant lines. a a A leak in the vacuum control circuit may occur during acceleration (slow leak), may exist at all times (large leak), and may exist only when specific functions are selected (indicating a leak in that portion of the circuit). The vacuum hoses used in the passenger compartment control circuit are constructed from PVC plastic material. The vacuum hoses used in the engine compartment are constructed of Hytrel®. Because of the materials used, never pinch the vacuum hoses off during diagnosis to locate a leak. A wood golf tee can be used as a plug when it is necessary to plug one end of the vacuum hose for leak test purposes. 3. If the inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, service as required. 4. If equipped with the electronic automatic temperature control system, go to Step 6. 5. If equipped with a manual A/C system, determine the symptom and go to the Symptom Chart. 6. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the Rotunda New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel to carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the NGS responds with NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIPPED for the electronic automatic temperature control module, GO to Pinpoint Test A. If the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test is passed for the electronic automatic temperature control module, retrieve the continuous DTCs and execute the Self-Test Diagnostics for the electronic automatic temperature control module to retrieve the current DTCs. Mechanical Electrical Open fuses. Blower motor inoperative. A/C compressor inoperative. Circuitry open/shorted. Disconnected electrical connectors. 7. If the self-test is passed and no DTCs are retrieved, go to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics. 8. If DTCs are retrieved, go to the Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. 9. If the electronic automatic temperature control module cannot be accessed by the NGS, GO to Pinpoint Test A. Electronic Automatic Temperature Control Module Self-Test The EATC module self-test will not detect concerns associated with data link messages like engine coolant temperature or vehicle speed signals. A NGS tester must be used to retrieve these concerns. The EATC module self-test will detect concerns in the system control functions and will display hard diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in addition to intermittent diagnostic trouble codes for concerns that occur during system operation. The vehicle interior temperature should be between 4-32° (40-90°F) when performing the self-test. If the temperatures are C not within the specified ranges, false in-car temperature sensor DTCs will be displayed. The self-test can be initiated at any time. Normal operation of the system stops when the self-test is activated. To enter the self-test, press the OFF and FLOOR buttons simultaneously and then press the AUTOMATIC button within two seconds. The display will show a pulse tracer going around the center of the display window. The test may run as long as 30 seconds. Record all DTCs displayed. If any DTCs appear during the self-test, follow the diagnostics procedure given under ACTION for each DTC given. If a condition exists but no DTCs appear during the self-test, refer to the Symptom Chart Condition: The EATC System Is Inoperative, Intermittent or Improper Operation. To exit self-test and retain all intermittent DTCs, push the blue (cooler temperature) button. The control will exit self-test, retain all intermittent DTCs and then turn OFF (display blank). To exit self-test and clear all DTCs, press the DEFROST button. The vacuum fluorescent display window will show 888 and all function symbols for one second. Then, the EATC control assembly will turn OFF (display blank) and all DTCs will be cleared. Always exit the self-test before powering the system down (system turned OFF). Intermittent DTCs will be deleted after 80 ignition switch ON cycles after the intermittent condition occurs.

Subject: Ford Ranger upper ball joint replacement Vehicle involved: 1998-2002 Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive Condition: O.E.M. supplier sells the upper ball joint as an arm assembly; we sell the ball joint only which can be pressed out of the arm assembly.
Repair Procedure: 1. Raise vehicle on hoist, and support lower control arm. 2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Mark position of upper eccentric camber bolts. 4. Remove upper ball joint spindle nut and pinch bolt, 5. Separate upper ball joint from spindle. 6. Remove nuts and camber bolts attaching upper control arm-to-frame, 7. Remove upper control arm. 8. Place control arm in vise, press ball joint out with ball joint press. See Fig. 1. 9. After ball joint has been pressed out install new ball joint (500-1109) with the words “install inboard” facing toward the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 2. Incorrect installation may cause damage to the ball joint 10. Install ball joint boot with words “install inboard” towards the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 3.11. Install upper control arm.12. Align upper eccentric camber bolts with marks made during removal.13. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to
specification. Then check wheel alignment
