SUBJECT: MODELS: Loss of Power Steering Assist – Replace Electric Power Steering Motor 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt 2005 Pontiac Pursuit 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 2006 Pontiac G5 Pursuit 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 Equipped with Electric Power Steering 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles; 2005 model year Pontiac Pursuit; 2005-2006 model year Pontiac G4; 2006 model year Pontiac G5 Pursuit; and 2007-2010 model year Pontiac G5 vehicles equipped with electric power steering. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will sound and a “Power Steering” message will be displayed in the Driver Information Center to inform the driver of the condition. Steering control will be maintained, as the vehicle defaults to a manual steering mode. If power steering assist is lost, it may require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, for example, below 15 mph (25 km/h). Unless a driver compensates for this additional effort, it may increase the risk of a crash. Typically, the next time the vehicle is started, the power steering assist will return and the “Power Steering” message will no longer be displayed. EPS Motor Replacement Procedure Note: The use of Loctite is no longer required. Loctite should not be used for any further applications. 1. Connect the Tech 2® to the vehicle and check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). 2. Record any present DTCs on the repair order and during claim submission. 3. Clear any DTCs that are present. 4. Remove the power steering assist motor. Refer to Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement in SI. Note: For 2005 model year vehicles only: Do NOT install the o-ring between the motor assembly and the steering column assembly. The new service motor kit will include an o- ring, but DO NOT install the o-ring for 2005 model year vehicles only. 5. Install the new power steering assist motor. Refer to Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement in SI. 6. Perform Test Drive.

FORD: 2005 Mustang 2004-2005 F-150 2005 Expedition, F-250, F-350 This article supersedes TSB 05-15-8 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature. The noise may be described as “ticks”, “taps”, “knocks”, or “thumps”. In some cases the noise may be a normal characteristic of these engines. In other cases the noise may require further investigation. Sorting out and defining the noise as reported by the customer is important to successfully diagnose and/or repair the condition. ACTION Before starting diagnosis, it is critical to determine the specific engine noise the customer is concerned with. The customer should be interviewed to get their detailed perception and description of the noise, and to determine if the noise occurs at idle or above idle speed, and if the engine is cold, hot, or both. Attempt to duplicate the noise, and determine the source of the symptom. Refer to the following Service Procedure to help determine the source of the noise and if a repair is needed. Removal 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Disconnect power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. 3. Remove power steering pressure (PSP) switch from power steering pressure hose. 4. On 2.0L engine, remove one nut, two bolts and disconnect power steering pressure hose from power steering pump bracket and engine lifting bracket. 5. On 2.5L engine, remove one bolt and disconnect power steering pressure hose from front engine support insulator. 6. Remove power steering pump auxiliary reservoir as outlined. 7. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. 8. Remove front sub-frame. Refer to Section 02-01. 9. Remove six bolts and steering gear cover plate from front sub-frame. 10. Disconnect power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose unions from steering gear. 11. Remove two bolts retaining power steering pressure and return hoses to front sub-frame and remove power steering pressure and return hoses. CAUTION: Whenever the power steering pressure and return hoses and/or steering gear are disconnected, the power steering pressure and return hoses and/or steering gear should be plugged to prevent system contamination. If the power steering system becomes contaminated with dirt or other foreign matter, power steering pump and/or steering gear failure may result. Installation 1. Position power steering pressure and return hoses to front sub-frame and secure with two bolts. Tighten bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). 2. Connect power steering pressure hose and power steering return hose unions to steering gear. Tighten unions to 31 Nm (23 lb-ft). 3. Install steering gear cover plate and secure with six bolts. Tighten bolts to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft). 4. Install front sub-frame. Refer to Section 02-01. 5. Lower vehicle. 6. Install power steering pump auxiliary reservoir as outlined. 7. On 2.5L engine, connect power steering pressure hose to front engine suppor t insulator and secure with one bolt. Tighten bolt to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). 8. On 2.0L engine, connect power steering pressure hose to power steering pump bracket and engine lifting bracket. Secure with one nut and two bolts. Tighten nut and bolts to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). 9. Install power steering pressure (PSP) switch into power steering pressure hose. 10. Connect power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. 11. Connect battery ground cable. 12. Fault Idle would intermittently rev up to 4000 rpm. Car would also accelerate on its own up to around 3000 rpm when driven off. If clutch depressed during this time while driving, the engine would rev up to 4000 rpm.
The Ford EECV engine management system ECM requires reprogramming. Vehicles Rectification
At present the vehicle needs to be returned to a Ford dealer for the engine management ECM to be reprogrammed using dedicated equipment. It has been noted that affected Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97FB-12A650-ASA. Later Ford EECV engine management ECMs have a part no. 97 -12A650-AFC. After the original Ford EECV engine management ECM has been reprogrammed, the Ford dealer should tag the Ford EECV ECM with the new part number

1. Place a drain pan under the vehicle. 2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine. 3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting. 4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation. 5. Remove the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Hose Replacement. 6. Remove the power steering return hose from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Return Hose Replacement . 7. Remove the power steering mounting bolts from the power steering pump. 8. Remove the power steering pump. 9. Remove the power steering pump reservoir from the power steering pump. 10. Transfer the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pulley Replacement Installation Procedure 1. Install the power steering pump reservoir to the power steering pump. 2. Position the power steering pump to the engine. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. Install the power steering pump mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.) .
