Disassembly (Ram-50) 1) Remove both 4WD indicator switches and steel balls. Remove speedometer gear assembly. Remove output shaft cover, gasket, wave spring and spacer. See Fig. 3. Remove rear cover, rear cover gasket and spacer from chain cover. Drive roll pin out of high-low shift fork. 2) Remove 2 seal plugs. Remove 2 poppet springs and steel balls. Shift transfer case to “4WD” and pull high-low shift rail out, in rear cover direction. Remove interlock plunger. Remove pulse generator (if equipped), front output shaft cover and pulse rotor (if equipped). Remove snap ring from rear bearing on output shaft. Remove chain cover, oil guide and side cover. Remove countershaft locking plate. Remove countershaft. 3) Remove countergear, 2 thrust washers, 2 needle bearings and spacer through side cover opening. Remove snap ring, spring retainers and spring from 2WD-4WD shift rail. Remove front output shaft, rear output shaft and chain as assembly. 4) Remove 2WD-4WD shift fork and distance piece. Drive out 2WD-4WD shift rail spring pin. Remove 2WD-4WD shift rail and lug. Remove high-low shift fork and high-low synchronizer sleeve. Remove needle bearing and snap ring from input gear. Remove input gear assembly. 5) If either control shaft or input gear oil seals are to be replaced, drive out roll pin from transmission control change shifter. Separate transfer case from adapter. See Fig. 3. Disassembly (Montero) 1) Remove dynamic damper, 5 detection switches and 3 steel balls. Remove poppet plug, spring and steel ball. Remove speedometer gear assembly. Remove output shaft rear cover, spacers, dust seal guard and oil seals. Front output shaft cover, wave spring and spacer (if equipped). 2) Remove high-low shift rail plug and high-low shift fork spring pin. Shift transfer case to “4WD”. Remove rear cover and high- low shift rail. Remove interlock plunger. Remove rear output shaft (viscous coupling) assembly and center differential assembly. Remove 2WD-4WD synchronizer assembly, chain and front output shaft from transmission as a unit. With White paint make match marks in grooves of 2WD-4WD synchronizer in 3 places. With White paint make match marks on spline projections of 2WD-4WD synchronizer sleeve in 3 places. Refer to match marks during reassembly. 3) Remove snap ring, spring seat, spring, 2WD-4WD shift fork and 2WD-4WD synchronizer sleeve. Remove differential lock hub, oil dam cover and bearing retainer. Remove side cover and gasket. Remove transfer counter gear shaft, transfer counter gear, thrust washer, needle bearings and spacer. Remove transfer drive shaft assembly. Remove high-low shift fork assembly and clutch sleeve. Remove transfer input gear assembly. 4) Remove 2WD-4WD shift lug spring pin, spring, spring retainer 2WD-4WD shift lug and shift rail. Remove input gear oil seal, baffle plate, dust seal guard and front output shaft oil seal. See Fig. 4.

1. Using a trim stick C-4755 or equivalent, pry the shift boot from the bezel. 2. Using a small flat blade, pry the shift pattern insert from the shift knob. 3. Remove the nut attaching the shift knob to the shift lever (Fig. 7). 4. Remove the knob and slide the shift boot from the shift lever. INSTALLATION 1. Slide the shift boot over the shift lever. 2. Snap the shift boot into place in the center console. 3. Position the shift knob on the lever, install the nut and tighten to 34 N.m (25 ft.lbs.) . 4. Position the shift pattern insert on the knob and press into place.

1. Vehicle Preparation. (FJ Cruiser shown) (a) Vehicle must be on level ground and not on an incline/decline. (b) Fully engage the parking brake. (c) Remove the shift lock release cover. Save for re-use. (Fig. 1-1) (d) Push in the shift lock release button. (Fig. 1-2) (e) Place the shifter in lowest gear. (Fig. 1-3) 2. Remove OE Shift Knob. (a) Remove the OE shift knob by turning counter-clock-wise. (b) Discard the OE shift knob 3. Install the Shift Knob. (a) Install the shift knob by turning clock-wise. (1) When fully installed there should be a 1/2” +/- 3/32” (12mm +/- 2mm) gap between the bottom of the shift knob shaft and the shift gate top surface. (2) The “barrel” of the shift knob should be oriented across the vehicle. (3) Place the shift lever in “Park”. (4) Replace the shift lock release cover. (5) Clean the shift knob with a non-scratch cloth.

1. NOTE: To prevent cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket. 2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead. 3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4R100 transmission 5. NOTE: To prevent shift cable assembly damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket. 6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift cable bracket. 7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. 1. To assemble bearing housing, proceed as follows: a. Using a suitable socket, press bearings into bearing housing. b. Install lock shoe springs, lock shoes and shoe pin into bearing housing. c. Install shoe release lever, spring and pin. d. Install sector drive shaft and snap ring into housing. e. Install lock bolt and engage bolt with sector cam. f. Install rack and spring. Block tooth on rack should engage block tooth on sector. g. Install tilt release lever. h. Install lock bolt spring and retaining bolt. Torque bolt to 35 inch lbs. On C, G and K models, install shift lever spring into housing. On Caballero and El Camino models, install shift lever spring into shift bowl. Install bearing support lock plate and wave washer. On C, G and K models, carefully install shift tube into lower end of steering column jacket. Install wobble plate end of tool J-23073 into upper end of shift tube. Install adapter over end of tube, seating it against the lock plate. Place nut onto threaded portion of tool and pull shift tube into housing. Remove tool. On Caballero and El Camino models, install bearing support thrust washer and retaining ring. Carefully install shift tube into lower portion of steering column jacket. Align shift tube key with shift bowl keyway. Using tool J-23073, pull shift tube into the shift bowl. Install thrust washer and retaining ring. Install actuator rod through support hole between shift bowl and steering column jacket. Install bearing support. Align bearing support “V” with “V” on steering column jacket. Install attaching bolts through support and into lock plate. Torque attaching bolts to 60 inch lbs. Align lower bearing adapter or bushing with notches in steering column jacket. Install lower bearing, bearing reinforcement and retaining clips. Ensure clips align with reinforcement slots on steering column jacket and adapter assembly. Install centering spheres and anti-lash spring onto upper shaft. Install lower steering shaft assembly. On C, G and K models, install steering shaft assembly into shift tube. Install ignition switch actuator rod through shift lever housing. On Caballero and El Camino models, position shift bowl into Park (counterclockwise to stop). Install ignition switch actuator rod between shift bowl and steering column jacket. Assemble bearing housing over steering shaft and engage rack over actuator rod end. On Caballero and El Camino models, position access hole of bearing housing over dimmer switch actuator rod end. While holding the locking shoes in the disengaged position, install bearing housing over steering shaft until pivot pin holes align with holes in support assembly. Install pivot pins. Place bearing housing in the full up (tilt) position. Install tilt lever spring guide, spring and spring retainer.
