Removal Turn crankshaft to No. 1 TDC. Drain coolant. Remove fan belt and timing belt upper cover. Remove wheel well splash shield, crankshaft pulley and timing belt lower cover. Remove tensioner and timing belt. Remove water pump inlet pipe. Remove water pump and gasket. Installation To install, reverse removal procedure. During assembly, apply a coating of vegetable oil to “O” ring. See TIMING BELT R & I for alignment and adjustment procedures. Fill cooling system.

WATER PUMP DRIVE BELT 1. Verify that the water pump drive belt auto tensioner indicator mark does not exceeds the limit. ? If it exceeds the limit, replace the water pump drive belt. (See WATER PUMP DRIVE BELT .) Fig. 21: Water Pump Drive Belt Auto Tensioner Limit Indicator Mark – Malfunction/Worn Belt WATER PUMP DRIVE BELT 1. Remove the plug hole plate. 2. Rotate the water pump drive belt auto tensioner counterclockwise to release the drive belt tension and remove the water pump drive belt. Fig. 23: Locating Water Pump Drive Belt Auto Tensioner 3. Reinstall the water pump drive belt or install a new water pump drive belt. WATER PUMP DRIVE BELT PULLEY REMOVAL NOTE 1. Coolant loss through the water pump bearing seal is commonly caused by a faulty cooling system pressure cap. With certain designs of the plastic pressure cap, if the cooling system overheats distortion of the pressure relief valve in the cap can cause the valve to stick and result in excessive pressure in the cooling system. It is recommended that the coolant pressure cap is always checked for correct operation, prior to the fitment of a new water pump. Thermostat Testing In order to confirm if the thermostat is operating as required, the correct testing procedure should be adopted. Equipment required : 1) A container of undiluted anti-freeze mixture, to allow the temperature of the liquid to be raised above boiling point. (DO NOT use plain water). 2) A suitable heating element to raise the temperature of the liquid. 3) An accurately calibrated thermometer, with a range suitable for the thermostat to be tested. Testing Lower the thermostat into the container of anti-freeze, along with the thermometer, and heat the liquid slowly to the temperature marked on the thermostat, e.g 88 degrees, whilst agitating the thermostat. Let the temperature remain stable for one minute, then check for initial opening of the thermostat valve, Note: The valve will only just crack open at this temperature. Increase the temperature of the liquid to at least 14 degrees above the initial opening temperature, e.g.102 degrees, again allow one minute, then check the valve is fully opened. Allow the liquid to cool to below the initial opening temperature, then check that the valve is fully closed. Opening and fully open temperatures should be within plus or minus 2 degrees of those stated A build up of sediment coating on the thermostat can adversely effect the performance of the thermostat.

Water Pump Removal 1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301) . 3. Remove the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. 5. Use Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley (8509) while removing the four water pump pulley bolts. 6. Remove the water pump pulley from the water pump (8501) . 7. Remove the crankshaft pulley (6312) . Refer to the procedure in this section 8. Remove the five lower engine front cover bolts and the lower engine front cover (6019) . NOTE: Make a note of the location of the one water pump bolt with the threads in the bolt head for ease of installation. 9. Remove the six water pump bolts. 10. Remove the water pump . Installation NOTE: Ensure the mating surfaces between the water pump and the cylinder block (6010) are cleaned of any sealant material. 1. Install a continuous 2.0-3.0mm (0.079-0.118 inch) wide bead of Gasket Maker E2AZ-19562-B or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G348-A5, on the water pump and position the water pump on the cylinder block . NOTE: Refer to the note made during removal for the location of the bolt with the threads in the bolt head. 2. Install the six water pump bolts. Tighten the water pump bolts to 16-21 Nm (12-15 lb-ft). 3. Install the crankshaft pulley . Refer to the procedure in this section. 4. Position the water pump pulley on the water pump and install the four water pump pulley bolts. 5. Use Strap Wrench D85L-6000-A or equivalent to hold the water pump pulley , and tighten the four water pump pulley bolts to 16-21 Nm (12-15 lb-ft). 6. Install the lower engine front cover and the five lower engine front cover bolts. Tighten the five lower engine front cover bolts to 3-5 Nm (27-44 lb-in). 7. Lower the vehicle. 8. Install and adjust the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05. 9. Connect the battery ground cable . 10. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03. 11. Start the engine (6007) and check for leaks.

Install and adjust the generator drive belt, water pump and power steering pump drive belt, and the A/C compressor drive belt (if equipped). Refer to Section 03-05 for the installation and adjustment procedures. 9. Connect the battery ground cable . 10. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Section 03-03 for the procedure. 11.
