TSB SB05-05-5004 Shift Lock Solenoid ISSUE DATE: MAY 2005 Affected Vehicles 2002-2004 Isuzu Axiom (UP) 1998-2004 Isuzu Rodeo (UE) and Rodeo Sport (UA) Service Information Use the following steps to remove and replace the Shift Lock Solenoid. Service Procedure 1. Access the Shift Lock Solenoid by removing the Center, Front, Rear Console Assemblies, Selector Lever Knob, and Cover Assembly. Refer to the Selector Lever section in the Service Manual. 2. Set parking brake, move Selector Lever to lowest gear, and remove the Shift Lock Cable. 3. Remove the two screws securing the Shift Lock Solenoid to the Selector Lever subassembly. Disconnect the Shift Lock Solenoid 2-pin connector. 4. Disconnect the 1-40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) six-pin connector and slide the female connector off bracket. Remove the Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) Lock from the connector. Locate the two blue wires in position 1 and 3 on the female connector. With appropriate tool (shown above), apply light pressure upward on the connector locking tab while gently pulling on the blue wire to release. Note :Never use force to remove a terminal from a connector. 5. Insert the two blues wires from the replacement Shift Lock Solenoid into the 1- 40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) female connector. It does not matter which blue wire is inserted into the 1 and 3 position. Gently tug the blue wires to make sure they are secure. NOTE iscard the extra 2-pin connector sub harness included with replacement Shift Lock Solenoid P/N 8-97181-068-2. 6. Reconnect the Shift Lock Solenoid 2-pin connector and reattach the two screws securing the Shift Lock Solenoid to the selector lever subassembly. 7. Reconnect the 1-40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) six-pin connector and slide the female connector onto the bracket. 8. Reinstall the Selector Lever Knob, Cover Assembly, Center, Front, and Rear Console Assemblies. Refer to the Selector Lever section in the Service Manual. 9. Check Shift Lock operation: a. With ignition key in “Lock” position, Selector lever should not move from “P” position. b. With ignition key in “ON” position and brake pedal depressed. Selector lever can be moved out of “P” position. c. Key can be removed only when turned to “LOCK” position and selector lever is in “P” position.

1994-1997 Ford Probe, Mazda MX3 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1994-2000 Mazda 626 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1998-2000 Mazda 626 with 6 cyl. & A/T 1995-2000 Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique with 6 cyl. & A/T 1999-2001 Mercury Cougar with A/T SUBJECT Vehicles with the Ford CD4E automatic transmission. CONDITION The driver’s side front CV axle has a 6-½ inch male inboard stub that fits into the transmission’s side gear. On the stub next to the housing seal surface is a carrier support surface that fits into the final drive sun gear inside the transmission (see figure 1). This sprocket assembly is chain driven with the reverse/overdrive sprocket by the planetary gear sets (see figure 2). The final drive sprocket assembly rides on the axle stub carrier support surface using a pressed, center bored bushing. This bushing wears the carrier support surface causing damage to the axle and eventually the transmission. SOLUTION If the carrier support surface of the axle being replaced appears rough and worn, then several possible failures need to be checked before replacing the axle or premature failure of the axle or possible damage to the transmission could occur. If the transmission’s internal oiling solenoid that lubricates this bushing fails, then the 2nd and 3rd gearshifts will not function. Although the Aftermarket lists this bushing, no tool exists to replace it. Ford only offer the bushing in a complete sprocket assembly making its replacement a very costly repair. The most common contributor to premature wear of this bushing is the vehicle not being within proper alignment specs. Without a four-wheel alignment, even though the front wheels may be centered to the rack, the rear thrust is pushing the front wheels causing stress on the front CV joints. The thrust forces acting on the front wheels while driving changes ALL the alignment specs resulting in the front wheels being in a constant turning action. This will wear the side gears and transmission seals as well as stressing this bushing. Another possible sign that alignment is affecting these items is a worn or torn inboard boot. Do not forget that worn motor mounts will also affect alignment thrust forces.

Diagnostic Fault Information Circuit Switch Side Supply Voltage Relay Door Lock/Unlock Signal Door Latch Control Driver Door Lock Switch Ground Passenger Front Door Lock Switch Ground BCM Ground 1. Door Lock Malfunction 2. Door Lock Switch Malfunction Circuit/System Description The DR LCK fuse supplies battery positive voltage to the body control module BCM for the door lock system. The BCM supplies and monitors a reference voltage to the door lock switch through the door lock switch lock/unlock signal circuit. The door lock switch also receives a constant ground source. If a door lock switch is placed in the lock position, the reference voltage is taken directly to ground and the BCM senses 0.0 volts on the signal circuit. If a door lock switch is placed in the unlock position, the reference voltage is taken to ground through a 1.5k ohm resistor that is internal to the door lock switches and senses approximately 2.9 volts on the signal circuit. This is how the BCM determines what portion of the door lock switch was activated. The BCM, upon receipt of a door lock switch lock or unlock signal, will switch the appropriate door lock actuator control circuits to battery positive voltage. The opposing side of the door lock actuators are connected to ground internally within the BCM through the other door lock actuator control circuit and the doors will lock or unlock appropriately. Vehicles without keyless entry have two internal drivers in the BCM to control the door lock actuators. All door lock and all door unlock. Vehicles equipped with keyless entry have three internal drivers in the BCM. Driver door unlock, passenger door unlock and all door lock. This is done to isolate the driver door lock actuator so it can be unlocked by itself using the keyless entry transmitter.
