Spark Check for spark at secondary coil wire and each spark plug wire using a spark tester. If spark is not present, continue with following tests. Check spark plug wire resistance on suspect wires. Resistance should be less than 25,000 ohms. Ignition Coil Power Source 1. On Civic, remove distributor cap to check power source directly at coil. On all models, disconnect ignition coil primary leads. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and Black/Yellow wire terminal of ignition coil harness. 2. Battery voltage should be present. If battery voltage is not present, check for open in Black/Yellow wire between coil and ignition switch. Ignitor Power Source Turn ignition off. Disconnect harness connector at distributor. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check for battery voltage between ground and Black/Yellow wire of harness. If voltage is not present, check for open in Black/Yellow wire between ignition coil and harness connector. If wire is okay, check ignition coil resistance (for internal short to ground). Ignitor Check Check TDC/CRANK/CYL sensor resistance values. See TACH PULSE SIGNAL . Check power sources. If no problems are found and spark is not present, replace ignitor. Ignition Coil Resistance (Accord & Prelude) 1. Remove primary and secondary leads from ignition coil. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between primary terminals “A” and “C” (”A” and “B” for Prelude) of ignition coil. See Fig. 2 . Resistance should be .6-.8 ohm at room temperature. 2. On Accord, check resistance between terminals “B” and “D” of ignition coil (tachometer circuit). Resistance should be about 2090-2310 ohms at room temperature. 3. On all models, check secondary resistance between terminal “A” and secondary output terminal (coil tower). See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE table. Check for continuity between terminals “A” and “B” (”A” and “C” for Prelude). Continuity should exist. If readings are not within specification, replace coil.

SECONDARY CIRCUIT CHECK CAUTION: When checking secondary voltage, do not remove spark plug wires from spark plugs No. 3 on 4-cylinder, No. 1 or 5 on 6-cylinder and No. 3 or 4 on V8 Engines. 1. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap. Use insulated pliers to hold wire approximately 1/2″ from engine block or intake manifold. 2. Crank engine and check for spark at gap. If no spark occurs, turn off ignition switch, and check resistance of secondary coil windings. See Ignition Coil Resistance Check, Secondary Resistance. Replace ignition coil if outside specifications. 3. If spark occurred in step 2), connect coil wire to distributor cap. Remove wire from 1 spark plug. Using insulated pliers, hold wire 1/2″ from engine head while cranking engine. Check for spark. 4. If spark occurs, check for fuel problems or incorrect timing. If no sparks occur, check for defective rotor or distributor cap or for defective spark plug wires. CURRENT FLOW CHECK 1. Remove connector from ignition coil. Remove positive wire from connector, then negative wire. Connect ammeter between positive terminal of coil and disconnected positive wire. Connect jumper wire from negative terminal to good ground. 2. Turn ignition switch “ON”. Current flow should be approximately 7 amps., but should not exceed 7.6 amps. If more than 7.6 amps., replace ignition coil. 3. With ammeter still connected to coil positive terminal, remove jumper wire from negative terminal. Connect coil Green wire to negative terminal. Current flow should be approximately 4 amps. 4. If less than 3.5 amps., check for poor connections in 4-wire and 3-wire connectors or for poor ground at distributor ground screw. 5. If current flow is greater than 5 amps., the control unit is defective and must be replaced. Start engine. Normal current flow with engine running is 2.0-2.4 amps. If outside of specifications, replace control

The following procedure applies to vehicles that have functional lock cylinders, ignition keys available for the vehicle, or ignition key numbers that are known and the proper key can be made. REMOVAL 1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove steering wheel as described below. Ensure steering wheel is in full up position on models with tilt steering. a. Disconnect battery ground cable (two ground cables on diesel engines). b. From underside of steering wheel, remove screws attaching horn pad to steering wheel spokes. c. Lift up steering wheel pad, then disconnect horn wires and electrical connectors from pad. d. Remove steering wheel attaching bolt and damper, if equipped. e. Remove steering wheel using steering wheel remover T67L-3600-A or equivalent, Do not use a knock-off type wheel puller or strike end of steering shaft, as damage will result. On models with tilt steering, remove tilt lever, then the steering column collar by pressing on collar from top and bottom while removing. On all models, remove lower dash panel trim cover, then the column shroud retaining screws from bottom of column shroud. Remove bottom half of shroud by pulling shroud down and toward rear of vehicle. Move shift lever as required to ease shroud removal on models with automatic transmission. Lift top half of shroud from column. Turn lock cylinder with key to ON position. Selector lever must be placed in PARK position on vehicles with automatic transmission. Push down on lock cylinder retaining pin using a 1/8 inch diameter wire pin or small punch, then pull lock cylinder from column housing, Fig. 4. Disconnect lock cylinder electrical connector from horn brush electrical connector. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. INSTALLATION 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Lubricate lock cylinder with suitable grease, then turn lock cylinder to ON position and depress retaining pin. Insert lock cylinder into housing in flange casting, ensuring that tab at end of cylinder aligns with slot in ignition drive gear. Turn key to OFF position, allowing cylinder retaining pin to extend into cylinder casting housing hole. Rotate lock cylinder to all positions, ensuring cylinder is operating properly. Connect lock cylinder electrical connector to horn brush electrical connector. Position top half of steering column shroud onto column so that screw moldings on shroud seat in mounting bores in column. Place shift lever in lowest position to aid assembly on vehicles with automatic transmission. Install bottom half of shroud by sliding guides in bottom half of shroud into tabs in top half. Install shroud retaining screws and torque to 18.5-25.6 inch lbs. On models with tilt steering, install steering column collar by pressing on top and bottom while installing on column. Install tilt lever and torque to 2.2-3.6 ft lb On all models, install steering wheel as follows: a. Position steering wheel on end of steering shaft, aligning mark and flats on steering wheel with mark and flats on steering shaft, and ensuring that straight ahead steering wheel position corresponds with straight ahead position of front wheels. b. If equipped, install damper and align locators with hole in wheel hub. c. Install steering wheel attaching bolt and torque to 23-33 ft lb d. Connect horn wires and electrical connectors, then install horn pad. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11.

REMOVAL 1. Remove the wet cowl. 2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the ignition coil. CAUTION: When removing the spark plug wires a slight twisting motion will break the seal and ease removal. 3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector. 4. Remove the mounting screws and remove the ignition coil. INSTALLATION 1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Disconnect all the electrical connectors at the ignition control module. Note position of spark plug wires for installation and disconnect the spark plug wires from ignition coils. Remove the screws securing coil assemblies to ignition control module. Disconnect the coils from ignition control module. Remove the ignition control module from the bracket. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1. Install the ignition control module on the bracket. 2. Install the coils to ignition control module. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. Reinstall the screws. Tighten Tighten the screws to 4.5 N.m (40 lb in). 4. Connect the spark plug wires as noted during removal. 5. Connect the electrical connectors to the ignition control module.
