1992 Suzuki Swift VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

NOTE: Samurai & Sidekick 1) Remove rocker cover. Rotate crankshaft until zero degree (TDC) timing mark of timing belt cover is in line with timing mark on crankshaft pulley. 2) Cylinder No. 1 should be at TDC on compression stroke. Remove distributor cap, and ensure rotor is pointed upward at distributor hold-down bolt and to No. 1 terminal of distributor cap. If not as described, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees. 3) Measure valve clearance between adjustment screw and valve stem using thickness gauge. Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 2 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 3. 4) Turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 3 and 4 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 2 and 4. Ensure clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. 5) If clearance adjustment is necessary, loosen lock nut and turn adjusting screw. After adjusting clearance, tighten adjusting Swift DOHC uses hydraulic lifters. Adjustment is not required. screw lock nut to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 N.m) on Samurai or 90-108 INCH lbs. (10-13 N.m) on Sidekick. On all models, recheck clearance. Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 3 and 4 and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 2 and 4. 4) Ensure clearance is within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used; no valve adjustment is required. When valve and/or valve seat is machined, valve clearance is reduced and may cause improper valve operation. Different length push rods are available for correcting clearance. Valve lifter must be collapsed to check valve clearance. 1. With valve cover removed, position piston No. 1 at TDC of compression stroke. Completely collapse cylinder No. 1 intake valve lifter and hold valve lifter collapsed. Using feeler gauge, measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem. 2. Clearance should be within specification. Refer to COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE table. Replace push rod, if necessary, to obtain correct clearance. 3. Position crankshaft as specified. See, in this article, VALVE CLEARANCE CHECKING SEQUENCE table, and check appropriate valves. Replace push rods if clearance is not within specification. 4. If push rod(s) is replaced, ensure corresponding cylinder piston is below TDC. It will be necessary to loosen or remove rocker arm to replace push rod. Function The original intercooler for the L200 is quite small. Because of this the cooling capacity is low and the pressure drop is considerable. When increasing the power output of the L200 engine the boost air temperature must be kept as low as possible, while it has a great influence in performance as well as engine durability. Charge air cooling also has a positive effect on exhaust emissions from diesel engines. The pressure drop through the charge air cooler lowers the air mass flow trough the engine. To maximize air mass flow is essential to increase performance. Valve timing procedures Valve timing procedures Ensure crankshaft at TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure crankshaft pulley timing mark aligned with 0° timing mark on chain cover [1]. Ensure notch on camshaft points upwards [2]. If notch not visible, turn crankshaft one more turn. Install timing gears as follows: Ensure crankshaft gear and intermediate shaft gear timing marks aligned [3]. Install LH balancer shaft [4]. Ensure timing marks on intermediate shaft gears and LH balancer shaft gear aligned [5] & [6]. Ensure RH balancer shaft gear and oil pump gear timing marks aligned [7]. Cylinder Head Special Tool(s) Compressor, Valve Spring 303-567 (T97P-6565-AH) Spacer, Valve Spring Compressor 303-382 (T91P-6565-AH) Installer, Valve Stem Oil Seal 303-383 (T91P-6571-A) Material Metal Surface Cleaner F4AZ-19A536-RA Super Premium SAE 5W-20 Motor Oil XO-5W20-QSP Disassembly All engines 1. On Windsor engines, remove the Camshaft Position Aligner from the camshaft (6250). Item Specification WSE-M5B392-A WSS-M2C153-H 2. CAUTION: Do not remove the camshaft before removing the roller followers. CAUTION: Place the cylinder head (6049) on a cardboard or wood surface to prevent damage to the joint face. Install the Valve Spring Compressor Spacer between the valve spring coils to prevent valve stem seal damage. 3. NOTE: The roller followers must be reinstalled in their original locations. Record roller follower locations. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs (6513), and remove the roller followers. 4. NOTE: The hydraulic lash adjusters must be installed in their original locations. Record hydraulic lash adjuster locations. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters. 5. NOTE: Windsor engine shown; Romeo engine is similar. Use the Valve Spring Compressor to compress the valve springs. 6. CAUTION: Keep the valves and valve spring retainer keys (6518) in order so they can be installed in the same positions. NOTE: Shown without camshaft for clarity. Remove the (A) valve spring retainer keys, the (B) valve spring retainers (6514), the (C) valve springs, and the valves. 7. Remove the valve stem seals (6571). Romeo engine (4.6L) 8. NOTE: The camshaft bearing caps must be installed in their original location. Record camshaft bearing cap location. Remove the bolts, the bearing caps and the camshaft. Windsor engine (5.4L) Assembly All engines 1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers or other tools to clean the cylinder head or damage to the head can occur. Use a plastic scraper and metal surface cleaner to clean the cylinder head. 2. Lubricate the camshaft journals with clean engine oil.
