2002 Cadillac DeVille Blower Motor Replacement REMOVAL PROCEDURE

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Remove the right side sound insulator. Pull back the carpet near the blower motor. Remove the IP compartment. Remove the dash integration module from the bracket. Remove the two rear dash integration module bracket fasteners. Reposition the dash integration module bracket in order to remove the blower motor. 7. Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the blower motor. 8. Remove the blower motor retaining fasteners (1). 9. Rotate and remove the blower motor from the vehicle. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Rotate the blower motor in order to install the blower motor into the housing. 1. Install the blower motor into the blower motor housing. 2. Ensure that the blower motor gasket is properly aligned. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. 3. Install the blower motor retaining screws (1). Tighten Tighten the screws to 1.4 N.m (12 lb in). 4. Connect the electrical connector (2) to the blower motor.

Starter Motor Removal WARNING: WHEN PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE STARTING SYSTEM BE AWARE THAT HEAVY GAUGE LEADS ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY. MAKE SURE PROTECTIVE CAPS ARE IN PLACE WHEN MAINTENANCE IS COMPLETE. WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING, JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN THE RH KICK PANEL AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE OPERATIONS. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02 . 3. Remove the starter motor solenoid terminal cover (11N087). 4. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connections. 1. Remove the nuts. 2. Remove the battery cable. 3. Remove the starter solenoid wire. 5. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Remove the (A) starter motor ground cable nut and the (B) starter motor ground cable. 6. Remove the starter. 1. Remove the two bolts. 2. Remove the starter. Installation WARNING: WHEN PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE STARTING SYSTEM BE AWARE THAT HEAVY GAUGE LEADS ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Connect the starter motor electrical connections. 1. Position the starter solenoid wire. 2. Position the battery cable. 3. Install the two nuts. 4. Install the starter motor solenoid terminal cover. 5. NOTE: If equipped with air suspension, reactivate the system by turning on the air suspension switch. Lower the vehicle. 6. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy. Connect the battery ground cable.

1. Remove the rear wiper arm (5). 2. Remove the rear wiper motor drive shaft nut (6). 3. Remove the washer (7) and seal (8) from the wiper motor drive shaft. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Remove the liftgate trim panel. Disconnect the electrical connector (1) from the rear wiper motor. Remove the rear wiper motor screws. Remove the rear wiper motor (3) from the liftgate (5). Remove the rear wiper motor from the vehicle. Installation Procedure 1. Position the rear wiper motor (3) to the liftgate. Notice: refer to Fastener Notice. 2. Install the rear wiper motor screws. Tighten the screws to 6 N.m (53 lb in ). 3. Connect the electrical connector (1) to the wiper motor. 4. Install the washer (7) and seal (8) onto the rear wiper motor drive shaft. 5. Install the rear wiper motor drive shaft nut (6). Tighten the nut to 6 N.m (53 lb in ). 6. Install the rear wiper arm. 7. Inspect rear wiper for proper operation. 8. Install the liftgate trim panel.

Condition Some customers may comment on an inoperative or intermittent Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) blower motor. Others may comment that the blower motor speed may momentarily drop or that the blower motor continues to run after the key is turned off. Cause This condition may be caused by a voltage spike from the wiper motor. The voltage spike may cause a logic lock up in the blower motor control module that may be either momentary or permanent. Correction DO THIS DON’T DO THIS Install a Capacitor at the Blower Motor Control Module Connector Technicians are to install a capacitor, P/N 25073556, at the blower motor control module connector using the following procedure: 1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Refer to the Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect procedure in the Engine Electrical section of SI. 2. Remove the right closeout/insulator panel. Refer to the Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement-Right procedure in the Instrument Panel, Gages and Console section of SI. DO NOT replace the Blower Motor Control Module, Blower Motor or the HVAC Control Head

C1 CHECK BLOWER MOTOR SUPPLY VOLTAGE Gain access to the blower motor control connector. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Using a voltmeter, check voltage at Circuit 687 (GY/Y) at motor connector. Is voltage 10 volts or more? Yes GO to C4. No GO to C2. C2 CHECK CIRCUIT 687 (GY/Y) FOR SHORT Remove blower Fuse 30A at primary junction block. Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to Circuit 687 (GY/Y) at A/C blower motor. Measure resistance. Is resistance 5 ohms or less? Yes SERVICE Circuit 687 (GY/Y) for short. REPLACE fuse. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. No GO to C3. C3 CHECK CIRCUIT 687 (GY/Y) FOR OPEN Disconnect A/C blower motor control. Connect a jumper wire to Circuit 687 (GY/Y) at blower motor control connector. Connect other end to a known good ground. Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to Circuit 687 (GY/Y). Measure resistance. Is resistance 5 ohms or less? Yes GO to C4. No SERVICE Circuit 687 (GY/Y) for open. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. C4 CHECK BLOWER MOTOR SPEED CONTROL GROUND Gain access to A/C blower motor speed control as outlined. Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to Circuit 57 (BK) at A/C blower motor speed control connector, J1-2. Measure resistance. Is resistance 5 ohms or less? Yes
