Starting in 1995, the family style radios, as well as the 12-disc LLAI and 6-disc LLAI (Low Level Audio Interface) changers and the 10-disc FMI (FM Interface) changers, have error codes to help diagnose playback mediums. Some systems will only have an ERR message and no other indicator. If an ERR message is encountered without any other identifier, you may review the following error codes to try to determine the cause of the error and correct it before sending the unit to the authorized service center. If ERR or E (and a number) appears on a customer’s radio display, the number may give you a clue to the problem and corrective action. Below is a list of code numbers that may appear on the unit. Important: Not all family radios have these codes. They are dependent on the model year. Cassette Errors • E10 or TIGHT TAPE: Tight tape error Cause(s): A restricted cassette tape transport or broken cassette drive belt Correction: Substitute a different cassette tape. If there still is an error code, service the unit at an ACDelco® Service Center. • E11 or BROKEN TAPE: Broken Tape Error Cause(s): A broken cassette tape Correction(s): Substitute a different cassette tape • E12 : Communication Error

Principles of Operation Differential Electronic Module (DEM) and Active On-Demand Coupling The main role of the active on-demand coupling and the differential electronic module (DEM) is to regulate the all wheel drive (AWD) function by distributing torque between the front and rear axles. The system consists of a coupling that combines mechanical, hydraulic and electronic sections. The coupling unit is attached to the rear axle, between the differential gear and the driveshaft. The mechanical and hydraulic sections are driven by the driveshaft. Active on-demand coupling (AOC) has the following characteristics: Permanent AWD with electronic control of torque transfer front to rear 4X4 control module integrated into the DEM Similar to four wheel drive (4WD) operation No driveline wind-up during slow speed maneuvers or parking The system is not sensitive to size differences between the 4 road tires (when driving with a spare wheel, for example). The system is not sensitive to being towed with one axle raised. Inspection and Verification — Electronic Shift 1. Visually inspect for the following obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Axle shafts and universal joints Driveshaft and universal joints Rear differential Differential electronic module (DEM) Fluid leaks Matching tire size 2. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: check that the program card is correctly installed. check the connections to the vehicle. check the ignition switch position. 3. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool manual. 4. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the scan tool responds with: CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Section 418-00. NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for DEM, GO to Pinpoint Test A. SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module self-test. Carry out one key cycle after clearing codes. 5. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the 4X4 Control Module (DEM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. 6. NOTE: Not all DTCs cause the traction control indicator to illuminate. Refer to the table for specific DTCs. When the 4X4 control module (DEM) detects certain types of faults in the AWD system, a DTC is set and the traction control indicator will stay illuminated until the condition has been repaired and the DTCs are cleared using the scan tool. Carry out one key cycle after clearing codes. Condition The anti-theft alarm (ATA) may sound for no apparent reason after being armed DTC P1716, indicating an interior protection/tow sensor fault may be stored in the All Activity Module (AAM) as a result. The possible cause of this condition may be a software error in the security/trip computer tow sensor. Procedure 1. Verify that this service campaign has not already been performed (see step 5) 2. Replace the security/trip computer depending on the vehicle options (see WIS: AR54.21-P-9832GH Removing and installing trip computer control module and AR82.20-P-1100GH, Removing and installing front overhead control panel). 3. Version code the AMM using StarDiagnosis (DAS) or the Hand-Held Tester (HHT) as follows: ^ 09 Trip computer ^ Set to “present” (if equipped) ^ 12 ATA Interior/anti-tow protection ^ Set to present 4. Read out and erase any relevant DTC’s using StarDiagnosis or the HHT. 5. Affix the orange sticker supplied with the replacement computer to the inside of the garage door opener access panel or Home-link(R) universal access panel. Note: The orange sticker is used to identify the vehicle as having been retrofitted with a new security/trip or security computer. Do not confuse the aforementioned orange sticker with the orange or green sticker that may already be present on the replacement security/trip computers.

The climate control unit has a self-diagnostic function. To run the self-diagnostic function, do the following. NOTE: Before troubleshooting the climate control system, refer to B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A Troubleshooting , and the communication circuit self- diagnostic function test. 1. Turn the ignition switch OFF, and then ON (II). 2. Press and hold the OFF button. While holding the OFF button, press the recirculation button five times within 10 seconds . Release the OFF button, then the self-diagnostic begins. Wait for about one minute for the self- diagnostic to complete. NOTE: The blower motor will run various speeds regardless of what the panel is displaying. If there is any problem in the system, the temperature indicator will light up the segment (A through Ohm) corresponding to the error. The temperature indicator will then alternate every second between displaying “88″ (all segments lit) and the error code segment (A through Q). To determine the meaning of the DTC, refer to checking for DTCs.

When the ignition key is first turned to the RUN position, the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) compares the restraints ID that is stored in the SDM to the restraints ID that is stored in the BCM. The restraints ID that is being compared contains the last four digits of the SDM part number. Next, the SDM compares the VIN that is stored in the SDM to the VIN that is stored in the BCM. For more detailed information concerning the Class 2 data lines, refer to Data Link Connector Circuit Description in Data Link Communications. Conditions for Setting the DTC Ignition 1 voltage is within the normal operating voltage range. The restraints ID that is stored in the SDM does not match the restraints ID that is stored in the BCM or the VIN information that is stored in the SDM does not match the VIN information that is stored in the BCM. This test is only run once during power up initialization. Action Taken When the DTC Sets The SDM sets a DTC B1001. The SDM commands ON the AIR BAG warning lamp via Class 2 serial data. The SDM disables all deployments. Conditions for Clearing the DTC The restraints ID that is stored in the SDM matches the restraints ID that is stored in the BCM and the VIN information that is stored in the SDM matches the VIN information that is stored in the BCM.
