Testing with the impulse counter should be carried out for rapid fault diagnosis. The impulse counter output shows only existing faults, since the ACC system does not have memory capabilities. If one or more faults are indicated, repair as necessary and repeat the test. Be sure that fuse #7 is good, the battery voltage is between 11-14 volts and the temperature selector wheel is set to 22°C. 1. Connect the impulse counter to the on-board diagnostic connector. 2. Turn the ignition to the “ON” position. Black lead of the impulse counter to socket 1 Yellow lead of the impulse counter to socket 7 Red lead of the impulse counter to battery positive terminal. The LED “U Batt” will be illuminated. If the LED “U BATT” does not illuminate, check for voltage between socket 1 of the on-board diagnostic connector and the positive terminal of the battery. If the voltage is not between 11-14 volts, check for an open circuit or loose ground connection. Test for voltage between socket 7 and socket 1 of the diagnostic connector. The voltage should be 6 – 12 volts. 3. Depress the start button for 2 – 4 seconds. Fault codes will be indicated by the number in the impulse counter display window. Take note of the impulse display number. Faults are displayed in ascending order. The number 1 indicates that no faults are stored in memory. During the impulse readout, The LED indicator in the fresh air/recirculation switch will blink. 4. Repeat step 3 until all faults are indicated. After all fault codes have been displayed, pushing the start button again for 2 – 4 seconds will repeat the fault code readout sequence.

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures to retrieve or clear trouble codes without the Super Star II tester. The anti-lock brake/traction assist system has on-board diagnostic capabilities. However, the module as received from manufacturing is equipped with a stored error code (61). This will affect the service procedure. The error codes can be retrieved from the ABS module in the following manner. 1. 2. 3. 4. Connect Super STAR II tester to connector located in engine compartment on the power distribution box. Turn on Super STAR II tester and latch button down in TEST position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Read first code output. After approximately 15 seconds, the next code will be output. Leave button latched until all codes are output. NOTE: Make sure that all codes are written down. 5. The diagnostic procedure should be as follows provided that the CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator stays on all the time or flashes intermittently. NOTE: If the BRAKE warning indicator is on or intermittently comes on, refer to the Warning Indicator Symptom Chart. NOTE: If there are more codes stored in the anti-lock brake control module memory, no codes will erase until all codes have been output by the Super STAR II tester, all malfunctions have been serviced and the vehicle is driven about 40 km/h (25 mph). This means that if a 20s code originally existed and was serviced, it can be ignored when running the on-board diagnostic the second time. If the first code received is 18, 19 or in the 20s and no other code is received, service the indicated component. No other codes can be output if a 20s code exists. After servicing the indicated 18, 19, or 20s code, repeat the procedure for retrieving error codes. 6. If a code 61 is received with any other code, ignore the code 61 and service the other indicated components. If, after correcting all other indicated malfunctions, the CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator is still on, service the Fluid Level Switch (FLS) circuit. 7. If a code 61 is received and no other codes are received, service the FLS circuit. 8. If no code, or only a code 10 is received, use the Anti-Lock Quick Check Sheet since some possibilities are not recognized and retained in the anti-lock brake control module memory. See: Trouble Code Descriptions/Quick Check Sheet 9. When dealing with intermittent ABS warning light ON concern, make certain to visually inspect all wiring related to the component associated with the code received.

FORD: 2005 Mustang 2004-2005 F-150 2005 Expedition, F-250, F-350 This article supersedes TSB 05-15-8 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature. The noise may be described as “ticks”, “taps”, “knocks”, or “thumps”. In some cases the noise may be a normal characteristic of these engines. In other cases the noise may require further investigation. Sorting out and defining the noise as reported by the customer is important to successfully diagnose and/or repair the condition. ACTION Before starting diagnosis, it is critical to determine the specific engine noise the customer is concerned with. The customer should be interviewed to get their detailed perception and description of the noise, and to determine if the noise occurs at idle or above idle speed, and if the engine is cold, hot, or both. Attempt to duplicate the noise, and determine the source of the symptom. Refer to the following Service Procedure to help determine the source of the noise and if a repair is needed.
