NOTE: Always remove lower ball joint before removing upper ball joint. Install lower ball joint before installing upper ball joint. DO NOT heat ball joint or axle to aid in installation. Removal 1. Remove steering knuckle. See STEERING KNUCKLE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove snap ring from bottom ball joint socket. 2. Assemble “C” Frame (T74P-4635-C) and Receiver Cup (T83T-3050-A for Explorer and Ranger; D80T- 3010-A2 for Bronco and F150) on the lower ball joint. See Fig. 10 -13. 3. Turn forcing screw clockwise until lower ball joint is removed from spindle. Repeat procedure to remove upper ball joint. See Fig. 10 -13. Installation 1. Lower ball joint must be installed first. Assemble “C” Frame, Receiver Cup (T80T-3010-A for Explorer and Ranger, or T80T-3010-A3 for Bronco and F150), and Installation Cup (T83T-3050-A for Explorer and Ranger; D81T-3010-A for Bronco and F150). See Fig. 10 -13. 2. Turn forcing screw to install ball joint. Ensure ball joint is fully seated. To install upper ball joint, assemble “C” Frame, Receiver Cup (T80T-3050-A for Explorer and Ranger; T80T-3010-A3 for Bronco and F150), and Installation Cup (T83T-3050-A for Explorer and Ranger; D80T-3010-A for Bronco and F150). See Fig. 10 -13. 3. Turn forcing screw to install ball joint. Ensure ball joint is fully seated. Install snap ring on ball joints, and install steering knuckle.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 2. Remove and discard the nut. 3. NOTE: The wheel speed sensor connectors are located in the engine compartment and are secured to the fender aprons. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor connector. 4. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-04. 5. Detach the harness from the retainers. 6. CAUTION: Do not allow the disc brake caliper to hang suspended from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support. Remove the bolts and position the brake caliper and support bracket aside. 7. Remove the brake disc. 8. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components can result. Using the special tool, press the outboard CV joint until it is loose in the hub. 9. Remove and discard the cotter pin and the castellated nut. 10. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. CAUTION: Do not damage the tie-rod boot when installing the special tool. Using the special tool, separate the tie-rod from the wheel knuckle. 11. Remove and discard the cotter pin and the castellated nut. 12. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the ball joint from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. Using the special tool, separate the lower ball joint from the wheel knuckle. Reinstall and hand-tighten the lower ball joint castellated nut. 13. Remove and discard the upper ball joint nut. 14. CAUTION: Secure the front axle shaft to prevent the CV joint and boots from overextending. Failure to do so can cause damage to the CV joint and boots. CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the ball joint from the wheel knuckle or damage to the wheel knuckle will result. CAUTION: Do not damage the ball joint when installing the special tool. Using the special tool, separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle. 15. Remove the hand-tightened lower ball joint castellated nut and remove the wheel knuckle. 16. Remove the snap ring from the ball joint. Discard the snap ring.

Subject: Ford Ranger upper ball joint replacement Vehicle involved: 1998-2002 Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive Condition: O.E.M. supplier sells the upper ball joint as an arm assembly; we sell the ball joint only which can be pressed out of the arm assembly.
Repair Procedure: 1. Raise vehicle on hoist, and support lower control arm. 2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Mark position of upper eccentric camber bolts. 4. Remove upper ball joint spindle nut and pinch bolt, 5. Separate upper ball joint from spindle. 6. Remove nuts and camber bolts attaching upper control arm-to-frame, 7. Remove upper control arm. 8. Place control arm in vise, press ball joint out with ball joint press. See Fig. 1. 9. After ball joint has been pressed out install new ball joint (500-1109) with the words “install inboard” facing toward the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 2. Incorrect installation may cause damage to the ball joint 10. Install ball joint boot with words “install inboard” towards the inboard side of control arm. See Fig. 3.11. Install upper control arm.12. Align upper eccentric camber bolts with marks made during removal.13. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts and nuts to
specification. Then check wheel alignment

Removal 1. Remove the front wheel spindle (3105) and the right and left shaft and joint assembly. Refer to Spindle, RH and LH Shaft and Joint Assembly in the Removal and Installation portion of this section. 2. Disconnect the steering linkage, if necessary, from the knuckle. Refer to Section 11-03 in the Body, Chassis Manual. Steering Knuckle Installation 3. Remove the cotter pin from the stud of the front suspension upper ball joint (3049). Loosen the nut on the top stud and the bottom nut inside the steering knuckle. Remove the top nut. 4. Sharply hit the top stud with a plastic or rawhide hammer to free the knuckle from the axle arm. Remove and discard bottom nut. 5. NOTE: Note the orientation of the camber adjuster to make sure of the same camber setting. Remove camber adjuster by hand or, if difficulty is encountered, use Pitman Arm Puller T64P-3590-F. 6. Place steering knuckle in vise and remove snap ring from bottom ball joint socket if so equipped. 7. Remove plug from U-Joint Tool T74P-4635-C and replace with Plug T80T-3010-A4 (part of 4WD Ball Joint Tool Set T80T-3010-A). 8. Assemble U-Joint Tool T74P-4635-C and Receiving Cup T80T-3010-A2 (part of 4WD Ball Joint Tool Set T80T-3010-A). 9. NOTE: Always remove front suspension lower ball joint first. Turn forcing screw clockwise until front suspension lower ball joint is removed from steering knuckle. 10. Repeat procedure and remove front suspension upper ball joint. Installation 1. Clean steering knuckle bore and insert front suspension lower ball joint as straight as possible. 2. NOTE: If ball joint cannot be installed to the proper depth, realign Receiving Cup T80T-3010-A3. To replace the front suspension lower ball joint, assemble U-Joint Tool, Receiving Cup T80T-3010-A3 (part of 4WD Ball Joint Tool Set T80T-3010-A) and Installing Cup from Ball Joint Adapter Set D81T-3010-A or equivalent.
