1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Drain the coolant and disconnect the upper radiator hose. Remove the breather hose (between the air cleaner and the rocker cover). Remove the air-intake hose. Remove the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose. Remove the cables from the spark plugs. The cables should be removed by holding the boot portion. Remove the ignition coil. Remove the surge tank. Remove the intake manifold. Remove the heat protector and exhaust manifold assembly Remove the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the timing belt cover. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Zoom Sized for Print 12. Move the timing belt tensioner pulley toward the coolant pump and temporarily secure it. 13. Remove the timing belt. 14. Remove the rocker cover. 15. Remove the cylinder head assembly. The cylinder head bolts should be removed using Special Tool, Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (09221-21000), in the sequence as shown in the illustration. 16. Remove the gasket pieces from the cylinder block top surface and cylinder head bottom surface. NOTE: 1. Make sure that the gasket pieces do not fall in to the engine. INSPECTION 1. Check the cylinder head for cracks, damage and coolant leakage. 2. Remove scale, sealing compound and carbon deposits completely. After cleaning oil passages, apply compressed air to make certain that the passages are not clogged. 3. Check the cylinder head surface for flatness using a straight edge in the direction of A, B, …as shown. If flatness exceeds service limit in any direction, replace the cylinder head, or lightly machine the cylinder head surface. Cylinder head flatness Standard value: Less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) Limit: 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) REASSEMBLY 1. Clean all gasket surfaces of the cylinder block and the cylinder head. 2. Install a new cylinder head gasket onto the cylinder head assembly. Do not apply sealant to the gasket and do not reuse the old cylinder head gasket.

1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assembly. Disconnect brakeline bracket from strut assembly. Support control arm. Remove strut-to-steering knuckle bolts. Separate strut from steering knuckle. 2. Remove dust cap from top of strut. See Fig. 5 . Remove strut-to-body nuts. Remove strut assembly from vehicle. If no mark is present, mark bottom edge of coil spring for reassembly reference. Fig. 5: Exploded View Of Strut Assembly (Elantra & Tiburon Shown; Others Are Similar) Disassembly Mount strut assembly in vise. Compress coil spring using coil spring compressor. Remove self-locking bearing nut with Spanner Wrench while holding upper spring seat. See SPECIAL TOOLS table. Remove insulator and spring seat. Remove rubber bumper and dust cover. See Fig. 5 . Slowly release coil spring compressor tension. Remove coil spring. Inspection Check parts for deterioration or damage. Check strut assembly for leaks and proper operation. Replace strut if fluid leakage exists. Replace worn or damaged parts. Reassembly 1. To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Place coil spring identification mark toward knuckle. Ensure “D” shaped upper seat hole is aligned with notch in piston rod. Align coil spring ends in spring seat grooves. 2. Pack insulator bearing with grease and install dust cap. Avoid getting grease on insulators. Compress coil spring. Install rubber bumper and dust cover, spring seat and insulator. Using spanner wrench, tighten strut piston assembly lock nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Installation To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure strut assembly and steering knuckle mating surfaces are clean. Tighten fasteners to specification. Check front end alignment. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

Typically, the throttle plate angle parameter is 12-20% at time of condition with vehicle speed of approximately 24-40 km/h (15-25 mph). The customer may describe the condition as slip or delayed shift into second. Correction Replace the complete second clutch assembly with service kit, P/N 24240561. Refer to the GM Unit Repair Service Manual for the year and model of the vehicle being serviced for the 2nd Clutch service procedure. This service kit contains: Second Clutch Housing Fluid Seal Rings (613), a Second Clutch Assembly (617), a Case Cover (Channel Plate) Upper Gasket (430), and a Case Cover (Channel Plate) Lower Gasket (429). In addition to the content of this service kit, other gaskets not included in this service kit will also be needed to complete the repair – a Case Cover Lower Gasket (429), and a Case Cover Upper Gasket (430). These gaskets can be obtained by ordering gasket kit 24206391. Be sure to use ONLY the Second Clutch Assembly and Second Clutch Housing Fluid Seal Rings provided in this service kit. DISCARD the Second Clutch Assembly and Second Clutch Housing Fluid Seal Rings removed from the transmission being serviced. Disassemble ONLY the Oil Pump Assembly from the Case Cover (Complete). DO NOT disassemble the Control Valve Body from the Case Cover. Remove ONLY the Case Cover-to-Case bolts to remove the Case Cover and Valve Body from Transmission Case AS AN ASSEMBLY . To access all Case Cover-to-Case bolts, it is necessary to remove the Pressure Control Solenoid Valve Assembly (322), and 1-2 & 3-4 Shift Solenoid Valve

1994-1997 Ford Probe, Mazda MX3 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1994-2000 Mazda 626 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1998-2000 Mazda 626 with 6 cyl. & A/T 1995-2000 Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique with 6 cyl. & A/T 1999-2001 Mercury Cougar with A/T SUBJECT Vehicles with the Ford CD4E automatic transmission. CONDITION The driver’s side front CV axle has a 6-½ inch male inboard stub that fits into the transmission’s side gear. On the stub next to the housing seal surface is a carrier support surface that fits into the final drive sun gear inside the transmission (see figure 1). This sprocket assembly is chain driven with the reverse/overdrive sprocket by the planetary gear sets (see figure 2). The final drive sprocket assembly rides on the axle stub carrier support surface using a pressed, center bored bushing. This bushing wears the carrier support surface causing damage to the axle and eventually the transmission. SOLUTION If the carrier support surface of the axle being replaced appears rough and worn, then several possible failures need to be checked before replacing the axle or premature failure of the axle or possible damage to the transmission could occur. If the transmission’s internal oiling solenoid that lubricates this bushing fails, then the 2nd and 3rd gearshifts will not function. Although the Aftermarket lists this bushing, no tool exists to replace it. Ford only offer the bushing in a complete sprocket assembly making its replacement a very costly repair. The most common contributor to premature wear of this bushing is the vehicle not being within proper alignment specs. Without a four-wheel alignment, even though the front wheels may be centered to the rack, the rear thrust is pushing the front wheels causing stress on the front CV joints. The thrust forces acting on the front wheels while driving changes ALL the alignment specs resulting in the front wheels being in a constant turning action. This will wear the side gears and transmission seals as well as stressing this bushing. Another possible sign that alignment is affecting these items is a worn or torn inboard boot. Do not forget that worn motor mounts will also affect alignment thrust forces.
