1996 Lincoln Town Car Power Window Regulator REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Window Regulator, Power Front Door—Town Car Removal 1. CAUTION: When servicing front door power window regulator minus motor (23208), regulator cable tension must not be altered. Cable tension is preset at production. Improper adjustment may result in premature front door power window regulator failure or erratic operation. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill through the window regulator behind inner door panel. Additional repairs may be necessary. If front door window glass (21410) is in the down position and is inoperable, a through f must be taken; if front door window glass is operational, proceed to Step 2. a. Remove front door trim panel (23942) and front door trim shield (237A04). Refer to Section 01-05. b. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. c. CAUTION: Be careful not to strike or scratch front door window glass. Remove three 1/4 inch rivets retaining window regulator electric drive (23394) to inner panel. d. Working through front access hole in inner panel, remove three screws from window regulator electric drive. e. Separate window regulator electric drive from front door power window regulator minus motor. Raise front door window glass by hand and secure using tape. f. Proceed to Step 2. 2. Remove front door window glass as outlined. 3. Disconnect window regulator electric drive wiring connector. 4. Remove two upper front door power window regulator retaining nuts. 5. NOTE: Use care not to enlarge sheet metal holes in the door inner panel. Remove two 1/4-inch rivets retaining front door power window regulator minus motor to inner door panel. 6. Remove front door power window regulator minus motor from front door (20124). Installation 1. Lubricate front door power window regulator minus motor with Teflon® Lubricant E7FZ-19590-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C111-A as outlined. 2. Install front door power window regulator minus motor into access hole in inner panel. 3. Position front door power window regulator minus motor using upper front door power window regulator studs and tabs on window regulator electric drive mounting bracket. 4. Install rivets retaining front door power window regulator minus motor to door inner panel (1/4-20 x 1/2 inch screw and 1/4-20 nut and washer assemblies or equivalent metric fasteners may be used as alternates). 5. Install two upper front door power window regulator retaining nuts. 6. Install Front Door Window Glass as outlined. 7. Adjust Front Door Window Glass as outlined. 8. Install front door trim shield and front door trim panel. Refer to Section 01-05. Front Door—Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis Removal 1. If front door window glass is in the down position and is inoperable, the following steps must be taken; if front door window glass is operational, go to Step 2. a. Remove front door trim panel and front door trim shield. Refer to Section 01-05. b. Disconnect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01. c. Disconnect window regulator electric drive wires. d. CAUTION: Be careful not to strike or scratch front door window glass because it could break. Remove window regulator electric drive retaining screws through holes. e. Remove window regulator electric drive from front door power window regulator minus motor.

Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Turn the steering wheel to move the front wheels to the full left position. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the forward end of the left front wheelhouse splash shield to the inner fender panel and the front fascia. 5. Pull the forward end of the left front wheelhouse splash shield away from the inner fender panel and front fascia far enough to access the washer pump/motor unit (2) on the outboard side of the washer reservoir (4) for service. 6. Disconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connector (1) for the washer pump motor from the motor connector receptacle. 1. 2. 3. 4. NOTE: To aid in reinstallation, note the installed position of the washer hoses prior to disconnecting them from the washer pump. 7. Disconnect the front and rear washer hoses (3) from the barbed outlet nipples of the washer pump and allow the washer fluid to drain into a clean container for reuse. 8. Grasp the top of the washer pump/motor housing and pull it firmly outward far enough to disengage the snap post on the top of the motor from the receptacle in the reservoir. 9. Grasp the lower part of the washer pump/motor housing and, using a back and forth twisting action, pull the unit outward from the reservoir far enough to disengage the pump inlet nipple from the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir. 10. Remove the rubber grommet seal from the washer pump mounting hole in the reservoir and discard. 1. Lubricate a new rubber grommet seal with clean washer fluid and install it into the washer pump mounting hole located in the outboard side of the washer reservoir (4). Always use a new rubber grommet seal on the reservoir. 2. Position the barbed inlet nipple of the washer pump/motor unit (2) to the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir. 3. Using hand pressure, press on the lower part of the washer pump firmly and evenly until the barbed inlet nipple is fully seated in the rubber grommet seal in the reservoir. 4. Align the snap post on the top of the motor housing with the snap post receptacle in the washer reservoir. 5. Using hand pressure, press firmly and evenly on the top of motor housing until the post snaps into the receptacle. NOTE: Be certain to reconnect the front and rear washer hoses to the proper outlet nipples of the washer pump. Failure to properly connect the hoses will cause the front and rear washer systems to operate incorrectly. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Reconnect the front and rear washer hoses (3) to the barbed outlet nipples of the washer pump. Reconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness connector (1) for the washer pump/motor unit to the connector receptacle on the top of the motor. Reinstall the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the left front wheelhouse splash shield to the inner fender panel and the front fascia. Lower the vehicle. Reconnect the battery negative cable. Refill the washer reservoir with the washer fluid drained during removal.

Removal 1. Raise vehicle on hoist. Refer to Section 00-02. 2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly. 3. Remove rear stabilizer bar link and bushing link nuts at both ends of rear stabilizer bar (5A772) . Rotate bar up and out of the way. 4. Disconnect parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) at rear disc brake caliper (2553) . 5. Install three Rotunda Spring Cages 086-00031 or equivalent to rear spring as follows: a. Install one spring cage without an adjuster link to the inboard side (the innermost “bend” of the rear spring (5560) ). b. Install two more spring cages, with adjusters, at 120 degree angles to the previously installed cage. Spring, Rear 6. Place a transmission jack or suitable stand under the rear suspension arm and bushing (5500) as far outboard as possible. 7. Support the rear wheel knuckle (5A969) assembly by wiring the rear suspension arm and bushing to the body. 8. Remove lower rear shock absorber mounting bolt, washer and nut. 9. NOTE: Rear suspension arm and bushing must not be lowered until pivot bolts are loose. Do not attempt to remove plastic cap on front pivot nut. Loosen both inboard pivot bolts on rear suspension arm and bushing . 10. Remove two bolts and nuts retaining rear suspension arm and bushing to rear wheel knuckle . 11. Lower the rear suspension arm and bushing by lowering jack. Ensure spring cages properly seat on rear spring as rear suspension arm and bushing is dropped. 12. Remove jack, lower rear suspension arm and bushing down fully by hand and remove rear spring with cages in place. 13. Remove rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) , if necessary. 14. If spring cages are to be removed for installation on rear spring , use Coil Spring Compressor D78P-5310-A or equivalent to compress rear spring and remove cages. Rear spring center mounting insulator should be installed on rear spring before installing rear spring in tool to prevent slipping of plates.

Before adjusting rear side window, door window adjustment must be checked and corrected if necessary. The rear side window is adjusted to the door window. The side window adjustment sequence is: 1. In direction of travel and in height to door window, 2. In angle. All adjustments and functions should be checked with roof closed and open. Window regulator basic setting NOTE: Window regulator motor must operate with greatest possible operating force for window regulator basic setting. Therefore, it is necessary to leave the engine running. CAUTION: Risk of injury! Window travel must be able to be blocked in advance of closing. Under no circumstances should you leave your hand on window and allow the window to close completely. Procedure for window regulator basic setting: Start engine. Completely lower side window. Close side window and block with hand. Side window lowers (reverses). Close side window again within 5 seconds and block with hand again. Side window stops. Close side window again within 5 seconds . Side window runs without pinch protection up to mechanical window regulator stop. Within 5 seconds , hold window regulator switch for 5 seconds . Now window regulator motor is adjusted to window regulator.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-00. 2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00. 3. Remove the parts in the order indicated in the following illustration and table. 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. 5. Fill the axle with the specified quantity of the specified lubricant. For additional information, refer to the Specifications in this section. Item 2: Rear Disc Brake Caliper Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose. Provide a suitable support. Position the rear disc brake caliper aside. For additional information, refer to Section 206-00. Item 7: Differential Pinion Shaft Removal Note 1. Move the differential pinion shaft out far enough to remove the U-washers. Replace the shaft and install the lock bolt finger tight when U-washers are removed. Item 8: U-washer Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves. Remove the U-washers. 1. Push the axle shafts inboard. 2. Remove the U-washers. Item 10 and 11: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal and Axle Shaft Bearing Removal Note 1. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 8.8 inch rear axle, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. 2. CAUTION: Never remove the wheel bearing oil seal by itself. Always remove the wheel bearing oil seal and the rear wheel bearing at the same time. For the 9.75 inch and the 10.25 inch rear axles, use the special tools to remove the rear wheel bearing and wheel bearing oil seal. Item 11: Axle Shaft Bearing Installation Note 1. For the 8.8 inch and the 9.75 inch rear axles, use the special tools to install the rear axle wheel bearing. 2. For the 10.25 inch rear axle, use the special tools shown to install the rear axle wheel bearing. Item 10: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal Installation Note 1. Use the special tools shown to install the rear wheel bearing oil seal. Item 8: U-washer Installation Note 1. CAUTION: Do not damage the rubber O-rings in the U-washer grooves. Install the U-washers. 1. Position the two U-washers on the button end of the axle shafts. 2. Pull the axle shafts outward.
