AXLE SHAFTS – FRONT 1991-92 DRIVE AXLES FWD Axle Shafts Axle shafts transfer power from transaxle to drive wheels. Axle shafts consist of a shaft and flexible Constant Velocity (CV) joint at each end. See Fig. 1 . Inner CV joint is splined to transaxle. Outer CV joint is splined to hub assembly and secured by wheel bearing lock nut. Inner CV joint is a plunging tripod joint. The plunging action allows for axle shaft length change as suspension Inner and outer CV joints are enclosed by a CV joint boot. The boot maintains lubrication in the joint and prevents contamination of CV lubricant. Boots must be replaced when leakage or cracks are present. The inner CV joint can be repaired without replacing assembly. The outer CV joint must be replaced as an assembly.

Removal Procedure 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Raise the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Remove the brake drums Remove the axle shafts. Remove the differential. Remove the drive pinion from the axle. 7. Press the bearing off of the pinion using theJ 22912-B . 8. Remove the shim. 9. Remove the drive pinion bearing cups from the axle housing using a hammer and a brass drift in the slots provided. Move the drift back and forth between one side of the cup and the other in order to work the cups out of the housing evenly. Installation Procedure 1. Install the outer pinion bearing cup using the J 8611-01 (8.6 inch axle) (2), or the J 7818 (9.5 inch axle) (2) and the J 8092 (1). 2. Install the inner pinion bearing cup using the J 8608 (8.6 inch axle) (2), or the J 22306 (9.5 inch axle) (2) and the J 8092 (1). 3. Determine the selective shim thickness for the pinion. 4. Install the selective shim between the inner pinion bearing and the shoulder on the gear. 5. Install the inner pinion bearing using the J 24433 (8.6 inch axle) or the J 36614 (9.5 inch axle). Press the bearing on until the cone seats on the pinion shim. 6. Install a new collapsible spacer. 7. Install the pinion into the axle housing. 8. Install the outer pinion bearing onto the pinion. 9. Install a new pinion oil seal and the pinion yoke. 10. Install the differential. 11. Install the brake drums. 12. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. 13. Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid. 14. Lower the vehicle.

ON-VEHICLE SERVICE If noise or vibration is present in the vehicle driveline, the driveshaft may be out of round due to damage. This inspection will help determine if the driveshaft and its attaching driveline components are “true” or turning with an absolute minimum amount of lateral movement. SPLINE BACKLASH Check for spline backlash by shaking driveshaft back and forth. LOOSE UNIVERSALS Check for loose universal yoke bolts and nuts. Tighten if necessary. DRIVESHAFT DEFLECTION 1. Place transmission in neutral. 2. Raise and support vehicle. 3. Install a dial indicator to the vehicle undercarriage and place the indicator plunger on the driveshaft. 4. Measure both shafts in three separate locations: At the center and 3 in (76.2 mm) from each yoke weld. Slowly turn one of the wheels to turn the driveshaft and record the highest indicator reading in all three locations. REMOVAL 1. Raise and support vehicle. 2. Place index marks (reference marks) on the driveshafts and their matching transfer case and differential input/output shafts.

Manual locking hubs engage and disengage front wheels from axle shafts on 4WD vehicles. These hubs are are optional. When hubs are engaged in LOCK position, wheels and axle shafts rotate together. When hubs are disengaged or unlocked in FREE position, front wheels free-wheel on hub bearings. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION MANUAL LOCKING HUB Removal 1) Position locking hub in FREE position. Remove cover-to- body retaining bolts. Remove cover assembly and gasket. 2) Remove snap ring from drive axle. Remove body-to-hub retaining bolts. Remove body and gasket. See Fig. 1. DESCRIPTION Front axle on all four-wheel drive vehicles is a live axle unit with hypoid driving gears and steering knuckles. Drive is full floating through axle shafts which revolve in steering knuckles. Open knuckle is distinguished by use of ball joints instead of tapered bearings, and exposed axle shaft universal joints. LUBRICATION Repack wheel bearings every 24,000 miles. Refill universal joint cups at overhaul only OVERHAUL DISASSEMBLY 1) Remove wheel, brake drum (disc brake assembly) and wheel hub. See Locking Hubs in this Section. Remove spindle, then slide axle shaft out through steering knuckle
