NOTE: Ignition timing is not adjustable. Ignition timing verification requires WDS or equivalent. 1. Verify that the ignition timing (WDS: SPARKADV PID) is within the specification using WDS or equivalent. Ignition timing Approx. BTDC 8° 2. Verify that ignition timing advances when the engine speed increases gradually. If there malfunction, refer to “ENGINE SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING”. (See ENGINE SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING [LF, L3] ). IDLE SPEED INSPECTION NOTE: Idle speed is not adjustable. Idle speed verification requires WDS or equivalent. A/C ON and refrigerant pressure switch (middle) ON: 670-770 RPM *1 : Excludes temporary idle speed drop just after the electrical loads are turned on. *2 : generator generating current value. If there malfunction, refer to “ENGINE SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING”. (See ENGINE SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING [LF, L3] ).

Remove the rubber cap from the inspection window of the cylinder block. 2. Start the engine and allow it to warm up (cooling fan comes on). 3. Connect the ORN/RED and GRN/WHT terminals of the service connector (BLU) with a jumper wire. 4. Connect a timing light to the No. 1 ignition wire; while the engine idles, point the light toward the pointer on the flywheel (for M/T), or on the drive plate (for A/T). 5. Adjust ignition timing to: 15° +/- 2° BTDC 6. Adjust as necessary by loosening the distributor adjusting bolts, and turn the distributor housing counterclockwise to advance the timing or clockwise to retard timing. 7. Tighten the adjusting bolts and recheck the timing. 8. Remove the jumper from the service connector and replace the rubber cap to the inspection window.

Setting Camshaft Timing Important: Setting the camshaft timing is necessary whenever the camshaft drive system has been disturbed such that the relationship between any chain and sprocket has been lost. Even when only one sprocket is involved, multiple crankshaft rotations will not produce conditions where correct timing can be confirmed. If necessary, follow the left bank secondary camshaft drive chain replacement procedures to reset the camshaft timing.

1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature. Data Link Connector 1, Tachometer Connection 2. Connect tachometer test probe to terminal IG of the check connector. NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system before using it. Consult the operating manual for your instrument. Data Link Connector 1, Timing Connection 3. Using a service wire, connect terminals T and E1 of the check connector. 4. Using timing light, verify that the timing mark on timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle 5. If not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate housing until the marks align. 6. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing. 7. Remove service wire.

IGNITION TIMING NOTE: Perform all adjustments with engine at normal operating temperature, cooling fan and accessories off, transmission in Park or Neutral, and front wheels in straight-ahead position. NOTE: Adjustment of ignition timing cannot be performed on vehicles equipped with Distributorless Ignition Systems (DIS). If ignition timing is not within specification, see CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR in I – SYS/COMP TESTS article in this section. 1) Locate ignition timing adjustment connector. See IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT CONNECTOR LOCATION table. Connect jumper wire between ignition timing adjustment connector and ground. Check ignition basic timing. 2) If ignition basic timing is not within specification, loosen distributor and rotate to adjust timing if necessary. See IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS table. Remove jumper wire from ignition timing adjustment connector.
