1. NOTE: To prevent cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket. 2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead. 3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4R100 transmission 5. NOTE: To prevent shift cable assembly damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket. 6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift cable bracket. 7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. 1. Using suitable size allen wrench, remove the shift handle retaining screw (Fig. 251). 2. Remove shift handle from shifter assy. 3. Remove console bezel from vehicle. 5. Remove retaining clip from shift cable conduit bracket (Fig. 253). 6. Disconnect shifter cable from cable attach stud (pin) (Fig. 253). 7. Remove cable from center console routing. Leave flat on floor for ease of removal. 8. Raise hood. Remove gearshift cable from throttle/gearshift cable bracket (Fig. 254) 9. Unseat cable grommet at firewall and remove cable from interior of vehicle (Fig. 255). 10. Raise vehicle on hoist and disconnect fill tube bracket from transaxle. Rotate fill tube to gain access to shift cable clamp. 11. Remove cable from routing bracket (Fig. 256) 12. Remove cable-to-transaxle nut and slide cable off of stud (Fig. 255). 13. Disconnect shifter cable from shift lever assembly at transaxle (Fig. 255). 14. Remove cable from underneath vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Make sure transaxle shift lever is in “Park.” This is the most rearward position. Verify park sprag is fully engaged by rotating either a tire or an axle shaft. 2. Position cable in vehicle and connect cable end to the transaxle shift lever (Fig. 255). 3. Verify that the washer (Fig. 255) is still in place on the cable mounting stud. Install cable to transaxle and tighten nut to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). 4. Rotate fill tube to original location. Install and tighten fill tube bracket bolt. 5. Install cable “push pin” into bracket as shown in (Fig. 254).

1. NOTE: Make sure the parking brake control is fully released. Relieve the tension on the parking brake system. 1. Pull the front parking brake cable and conduit. 2. Insert a suitable retainer. 2. CAUTION: Do not use heat to loosen a seized lug nut (1012). Heat can damage the wheel and the wheel bearings. Remove the rear wheels and tires; loosen the lug nuts. 1. Remove the center cap. 2. With the weight of the vehicle on the wheels, loosen, but do not remove, the lug nuts. 3. WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING, JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN REAR JACK STORAGE AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE OPERATIONS. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02 . 4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 1. Remove the lug nuts. 2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 5. Disconnect the (A) parking brake intermediate cable from the (B) parking brake rear cable and conduit, LH. 6. Separate the (A) RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the (B) LH parking brake rear cable and conduit at the (C) parking brake cable equalizer. 7. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake cable bracket (2530). 1. Compress the parking brake cable clip. 2. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake cable bracket. 8. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to LH parking brake rear cable and conduit clip. 9. Remove the (A) RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the (B) rear parking brake cable retainer (2A709). 10. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to the RH hydraulic brake line clip. 11. Remove the parking brake cable retainer clip (2A826). 1. Remove the parking brake cable retainer clip bolt. 2. Remove the parking brake cable retainer clip. 12. Unclip the parking brake rear cable and conduit from the brake line clip on top of the rear axle housing.

Selector Lever Cable Vehicles Equipped with a 6R60 Transmission Removal All vehicles 1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 3. With the selector lever in PARK, disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever. Vehicle equipped with a 6R60 transmission 6. Remove the cable shield by prying on the shield closest to the boot, then sliding the shield away from the boot. 4. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever housing. 7. Unlock the lock tab and disconnect the selector lever cable end from the transmission manual lever. 5. Pull the cable and grommet through the floorpan. 8. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the bracket and remove the cable. Vehicles equipped with a 5R55S transmission 9. Remove the cable shield by prying on the side of the shield closest to the boot, then sliding the shield away from the boot. 10. Unlock the lock tab and disconnect the selector lever cable end from the transmission manual lever. 11. Disconnect the selector lever cable from the bracket and remove the cable. Installation Vehicles equipped with a 6R60 transmission 1. Install the selector lever cable into the bracket. 2. Connect the selector lever cable end onto the transmission manual lever and lock the lock tab. 3. NOTE: If the shield is loose, install a new shield. Install the cable shield. Vehicles equipped with a 5R55S transmission 4. Install the selector lever cable into the bracket. 5. Connect the selector lever cable end onto the transmission manual lever.

1. To assemble bearing housing, proceed as follows: a. Using a suitable socket, press bearings into bearing housing. b. Install lock shoe springs, lock shoes and shoe pin into bearing housing. c. Install shoe release lever, spring and pin. d. Install sector drive shaft and snap ring into housing. e. Install lock bolt and engage bolt with sector cam. f. Install rack and spring. Block tooth on rack should engage block tooth on sector. g. Install tilt release lever. h. Install lock bolt spring and retaining bolt. Torque bolt to 35 inch lbs. On C, G and K models, install shift lever spring into housing. On Caballero and El Camino models, install shift lever spring into shift bowl. Install bearing support lock plate and wave washer. On C, G and K models, carefully install shift tube into lower end of steering column jacket. Install wobble plate end of tool J-23073 into upper end of shift tube. Install adapter over end of tube, seating it against the lock plate. Place nut onto threaded portion of tool and pull shift tube into housing. Remove tool. On Caballero and El Camino models, install bearing support thrust washer and retaining ring. Carefully install shift tube into lower portion of steering column jacket. Align shift tube key with shift bowl keyway. Using tool J-23073, pull shift tube into the shift bowl. Install thrust washer and retaining ring. Install actuator rod through support hole between shift bowl and steering column jacket. Install bearing support. Align bearing support “V” with “V” on steering column jacket. Install attaching bolts through support and into lock plate. Torque attaching bolts to 60 inch lbs. Align lower bearing adapter or bushing with notches in steering column jacket. Install lower bearing, bearing reinforcement and retaining clips. Ensure clips align with reinforcement slots on steering column jacket and adapter assembly. Install centering spheres and anti-lash spring onto upper shaft. Install lower steering shaft assembly. On C, G and K models, install steering shaft assembly into shift tube. Install ignition switch actuator rod through shift lever housing. On Caballero and El Camino models, position shift bowl into Park (counterclockwise to stop). Install ignition switch actuator rod between shift bowl and steering column jacket. Assemble bearing housing over steering shaft and engage rack over actuator rod end. On Caballero and El Camino models, position access hole of bearing housing over dimmer switch actuator rod end. While holding the locking shoes in the disengaged position, install bearing housing over steering shaft until pivot pin holes align with holes in support assembly. Install pivot pins. Place bearing housing in the full up (tilt) position. Install tilt lever spring guide, spring and spring retainer.
