Park/neutral position switch detects the shift lever position and sends signals to the ECM. The ECM receives signals (P, R, N, D, 4, 3, 2 and L) from the park/neutral position switch. When the signal is not sent to the ECM from the park/neutral position switch, the ECM judges that the shift lever is in “D” position. When the shift lever is in the “M” position (with E-shift main switch for “D” and “M” pressed), “M” in the shift position indicator light will come on and when the shift lever is in the “D” position (with E-shift main switch for “D” and “M” released), “D” in the shift position indicator light will come on. When the shift lever is in the “L” position (with E-shift main switch for 2 and “L” pressed), “L” in the shift position indicator light will come on. When the shift lever is in the “2″ position (with E-shift main switch for “2″ and “L” released), “2″ in the shift position indicator light will come on. When the shift lever is in 4 or “M” position, the ECM prohibits shifting to 5th. See Fig. 87 . Possible causes are: Open or short in Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch circuit. Faulty PNP switch. Faulty ECM.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring (9D930) from distributor stator (12A112) (camshaft position sensor). 3. Remove stator camshaft position sensor retaining screws and distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) from camshaft position sensor housing. 4. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the engine front cover (6019) , proceed with Removal Step 5. If camshaft position sensor housing is not being removed, proceed to Installation Step 6. 5. CAUTION: Before proceeding with this procedure, set cylinder No. 1 to 26 degrees After Top Dead Center (ATDC) of the compression stroke. Then note the position of the stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position. Remove retaining bolt and hold-down clamp (12270) . 6. NOTE: The oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) should be removed with the camshaft position sensor housing. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from engine front cover . Installation 1. CAUTION: If the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor). Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper stator (camshaft position sensor) alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. If the plastic locator cover tool is not attached to the replacement distributor stator (camshaft position sensor), attach Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A as follows: a. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing. The cover tool should be square and in contact with entire top surface of camshaft position sensor housing. 2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old camshaft position sensor housing to replacement camshaft position sensor housing. 3. CAUTION: If stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector is not positioned properly (for example, contacting the A/C compressor bracket), DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install camshaft position sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on locator tool is pointed approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from the front face of the cylinder block (6010) . This step will locate stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Install hold-down clamp and retaining bolt and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). 5. Remove Syncro Positioning Tool T89P-12200-A. 6. CAUTION: If stator (camshaft position sensor) electrical connector is not positioned properly (for example, contacting the A/C compressor bracket), DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install distributor stator (camshaft position sensor) and retaining screws. Tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (22-31 lb-in). 7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to distributor stator (camshaft position sensor). 8. Connect battery ground cable .

CAUTION: Prior to removal of the camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126) , set cylinder No.1 to zero degrees top dead center (TDC) of compression stroke. Then note the position of the camshaft position sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires the connector be located in the same position. Removal 1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301). Refer to Section 14-01. 2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring connector from camshaft position sensor. 3. Remove camshaft position sensor retaining screws and camshaft position sensor from camshaft position sensor housing. 4. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the cylinder block (6010), proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing camshaft position sensor housing, proceed to Step 6 of the installation procedures. 5. Remove hold-down clamp (12270) (bolt and washer assembly). 6. NOTE: Remove the oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) with the camshaft position sensor housing. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from cylinder block. Installation 1. CAUTION: If the replacement camshaft position sensor housing does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement camshaft position sensor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper camshaft position sensor alignment. This will result in the ignition fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. NOTE: For 3.0L engines, use Syncro Positioning Tool 303-589. For 3.8L engines, use Syncro Positioning Tool 303-562 (T96T-12200-A). If the plastic locator cover tool is not attached to the replacement camshaft position sensor housing, attach syncro positioning tool as follows: a. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool. b. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing. 2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old camshaft position sensor housing to replacement camshaft position sensor housing. 3. Install camshaft position sensor housing so drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on syncro positioning tool is pointed approximately as shown in the illustrations. This step will locate camshaft position sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position. 4. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt assembly) and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 lb-ft). 5. Remove syncro positioning tool. 6. CAUTION: If camshaft position sensor electrical connector is not positioned properly, DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1. Install camshaft position sensor and retaining screws. On 3.0L engine, tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (23-30 lb-in). On 3.8L engine, tighten screws to 4.5-7 Nm (40-61 lb-in). 7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to camshaft position sensor. 8. Connect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01. Camshaft Position Sensor—3.0L Engine

FORD: 2005 Mustang 2004-2005 F-150 2005 Expedition, F-250, F-350 This article supersedes TSB 05-15-8 to update the Service Procedure. ISSUE Some vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature. The noise may be described as “ticks”, “taps”, “knocks”, or “thumps”. In some cases the noise may be a normal characteristic of these engines. In other cases the noise may require further investigation. Sorting out and defining the noise as reported by the customer is important to successfully diagnose and/or repair the condition. ACTION Before starting diagnosis, it is critical to determine the specific engine noise the customer is concerned with. The customer should be interviewed to get their detailed perception and description of the noise, and to determine if the noise occurs at idle or above idle speed, and if the engine is cold, hot, or both. Attempt to duplicate the noise, and determine the source of the symptom. Refer to the following Service Procedure to help determine the source of the noise and if a repair is needed. Automatic Transmission/Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Shudder, Water in Transmission (Repair Transmission and Replace Transmission Filler Tube, Level Indicator and Seal) Condition Some customers may comment on a shudder condition at approximately 64-80 km/h (40-50 mph) when the TCC engages. Cause This condition may be caused by water in the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Water may enter the transmission by dripping from the cowl area onto the handle of the transmission fluid level indicator. Indications of water in the ATF may include: • Visible rust on the transmission fluid level indicator. • Visible water in the oil pan. • A milky white substance inside the pan area. • Spacer plate gaskets that appear to be glued to the spacer plate, valve body or case. • Rust on internal transmission iron/steel components. Correction First, repair the transmission and second, replace the transmission fill tube, seal and level indicator to prevent repeat water contamination of the ATF. Transmission Repair 1. Remove the transmission. Refer to the appropriate SI procedure. 2. Disassemble and inspect the transmission. Refer to Unit Repair Automatic Transmission – 4L60-E/4L65-E. Important: If water or coolant is found in the transmission, the following components MUST be replaced. • Replace all of the rubber type seals. • Replace all of the composition-faced clutch plate assemblies including the band. • Replace all of the nylon parts (Thrust Washers). • Replace the torque converter. • Thoroughly clean and rebuild the transmission, using new gaskets and oil filter. • Flush and flow check the transmission oil cooler using J 45096. Refer to Corporate Bulletin Number 02-07-30- 052C or newer – Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flush and Flow Test Essential Tool J 45096 TransFlow . Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator WITH the transmission REMOVED from vehicle. 1. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube from the transmission. 2. Replace the transmission fill tube seal, P/N 1259475. 3. Replace the transmission fill tube, P/N 15000220, following the appropriate SI Document for Transmission Installation. 4. Replace the transmission fluid level indicator, P/N 15069769 when appropriate during the transmission installation. Replace the Transmission Fluid Filler Tube, Seal and Fluid Level Indicator with the transmission in the vehicle. 1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Element Replacement (SI Document ID# 1364496). 2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator from the filler tube.
