1. NOTE: To prevent cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket. 2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead. 3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4R100 transmission 5. NOTE: To prevent shift cable assembly damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket. 6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift cable bracket. 7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable. 1. Using suitable size allen wrench, remove the shift handle retaining screw (Fig. 251). 2. Remove shift handle from shifter assy. 3. Remove console bezel from vehicle. 5. Remove retaining clip from shift cable conduit bracket (Fig. 253). 6. Disconnect shifter cable from cable attach stud (pin) (Fig. 253). 7. Remove cable from center console routing. Leave flat on floor for ease of removal. 8. Raise hood. Remove gearshift cable from throttle/gearshift cable bracket (Fig. 254) 9. Unseat cable grommet at firewall and remove cable from interior of vehicle (Fig. 255). 10. Raise vehicle on hoist and disconnect fill tube bracket from transaxle. Rotate fill tube to gain access to shift cable clamp. 11. Remove cable from routing bracket (Fig. 256) 12. Remove cable-to-transaxle nut and slide cable off of stud (Fig. 255). 13. Disconnect shifter cable from shift lever assembly at transaxle (Fig. 255). 14. Remove cable from underneath vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Make sure transaxle shift lever is in “Park.” This is the most rearward position. Verify park sprag is fully engaged by rotating either a tire or an axle shaft. 2. Position cable in vehicle and connect cable end to the transaxle shift lever (Fig. 255). 3. Verify that the washer (Fig. 255) is still in place on the cable mounting stud. Install cable to transaxle and tighten nut to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). 4. Rotate fill tube to original location. Install and tighten fill tube bracket bolt. 5. Install cable “push pin” into bracket as shown in (Fig. 254).

1. NOTE: Make sure the parking brake control is fully released. Relieve the tension on the parking brake system. 1. Pull the front parking brake cable and conduit. 2. Insert a suitable retainer. 2. CAUTION: Do not use heat to loosen a seized lug nut (1012). Heat can damage the wheel and the wheel bearings. Remove the rear wheels and tires; loosen the lug nuts. 1. Remove the center cap. 2. With the weight of the vehicle on the wheels, loosen, but do not remove, the lug nuts. 3. WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING, JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN REAR JACK STORAGE AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE OPERATIONS. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02 . 4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 1. Remove the lug nuts. 2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. 5. Disconnect the (A) parking brake intermediate cable from the (B) parking brake rear cable and conduit, LH. 6. Separate the (A) RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the (B) LH parking brake rear cable and conduit at the (C) parking brake cable equalizer. 7. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake cable bracket (2530). 1. Compress the parking brake cable clip. 2. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the parking brake cable bracket. 8. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to LH parking brake rear cable and conduit clip. 9. Remove the (A) RH parking brake rear cable and conduit from the (B) rear parking brake cable retainer (2A709). 10. Remove the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to the RH hydraulic brake line clip. 11. Remove the parking brake cable retainer clip (2A826). 1. Remove the parking brake cable retainer clip bolt. 2. Remove the parking brake cable retainer clip. 12. Unclip the parking brake rear cable and conduit from the brake line clip on top of the rear axle housing.

1994-1997 Ford Probe, Mazda MX3 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1994-2000 Mazda 626 with 4 cyl. & A/T 1998-2000 Mazda 626 with 6 cyl. & A/T 1995-2000 Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique with 6 cyl. & A/T 1999-2001 Mercury Cougar with A/T SUBJECT Vehicles with the Ford CD4E automatic transmission. CONDITION The driver’s side front CV axle has a 6-½ inch male inboard stub that fits into the transmission’s side gear. On the stub next to the housing seal surface is a carrier support surface that fits into the final drive sun gear inside the transmission (see figure 1). This sprocket assembly is chain driven with the reverse/overdrive sprocket by the planetary gear sets (see figure 2). The final drive sprocket assembly rides on the axle stub carrier support surface using a pressed, center bored bushing. This bushing wears the carrier support surface causing damage to the axle and eventually the transmission. SOLUTION If the carrier support surface of the axle being replaced appears rough and worn, then several possible failures need to be checked before replacing the axle or premature failure of the axle or possible damage to the transmission could occur. If the transmission’s internal oiling solenoid that lubricates this bushing fails, then the 2nd and 3rd gearshifts will not function. Although the Aftermarket lists this bushing, no tool exists to replace it. Ford only offer the bushing in a complete sprocket assembly making its replacement a very costly repair. The most common contributor to premature wear of this bushing is the vehicle not being within proper alignment specs. Without a four-wheel alignment, even though the front wheels may be centered to the rack, the rear thrust is pushing the front wheels causing stress on the front CV joints. The thrust forces acting on the front wheels while driving changes ALL the alignment specs resulting in the front wheels being in a constant turning action. This will wear the side gears and transmission seals as well as stressing this bushing. Another possible sign that alignment is affecting these items is a worn or torn inboard boot. Do not forget that worn motor mounts will also affect alignment thrust forces.

NOTE: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove ignition coil. Drain the engine coolant. Remove water inlet pipe (1). See Fig. 29 . On A/T models, disconnect oil cooler. On all models, remove thermostat housing (2). Remove thermostat (3). 2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Verify that the jiggle pin is aligned with the projection on the thermostat gasket as shown. See Fig. 30 . Install the thermostat into the thermostat case, aligning the projection on the gasket to the thermostat case as shown. See Fig. 31 . 3. Tighten thermostat housing bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill and bleed cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING . Numbers in parenthesis refer to numbers in illustration.
