Starter Motor Removal WARNING: WHEN PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE STARTING SYSTEM BE AWARE THAT HEAVY GAUGE LEADS ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY. MAKE SURE PROTECTIVE CAPS ARE IN PLACE WHEN MAINTENANCE IS COMPLETE. WARNING: THE ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM MUST BE SHUT OFF PRIOR TO HOISTING, JACKING OR TOWING AN AIR SUSPENSION VEHICLE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED BY TURNING OFF THE AIR SUSPENSION SWITCH LOCATED IN THE RH KICK PANEL AREA. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN UNEXPECTED INFLATION OR DEFLATION OF THE AIR SPRINGS WHICH MAY RESULT IN SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE DURING THESE OPERATIONS. 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to Section 100-02 . 3. Remove the starter motor solenoid terminal cover (11N087). 4. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connections. 1. Remove the nuts. 2. Remove the battery cable. 3. Remove the starter solenoid wire. 5. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Remove the (A) starter motor ground cable nut and the (B) starter motor ground cable. 6. Remove the starter. 1. Remove the two bolts. 2. Remove the starter. Installation WARNING: WHEN PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE STARTING SYSTEM BE AWARE THAT HEAVY GAUGE LEADS ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY. MAKE SURE PROTECTIVE CAPS ARE IN PLACE WHEN MAINTENANCE IS COMPLETE. 1. Install the starter motor. 1. Position the starter motor. 2. Install the two bolts. 2. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Connect the (A) starter motor ground cable and install the (B) starter motor ground cable nut. 3. NOTE: The 4.6L engine is shown; the 5.4L engine is similar. Connect the starter motor electrical connections. 1. Position the starter solenoid wire. 2. Position the battery cable. 3. Install the two nuts. 4. Install the starter motor solenoid terminal cover. 5. NOTE: If equipped with air suspension, reactivate the system by turning on the air suspension switch. Lower the vehicle. 6. NOTE: When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 mi) or more to relearn the strategy. Connect the battery ground cable.

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSE CORRECTION Very High Frequency Excessive distance between Shim starter motor toward Flywheel/Drive Whine Before Engine pinion gear and Flywheel/Drive Plate. Starts; Engine Starts OK. Plate gear. Very High Frequency Insufficient distance between Shim starter motor away from Whine After Engine Starts starter motor pinion gear and Flywheel/Drive Plate. Inspect With Ignition Key Flywheel/ Drive Plate runout Flywheel/Drive Plate for damage; bent, Released. Engine Starts can cause noise to be unusual wear, and excessive runout. OK. intermittent. Replace Flywheel/Drive Plate as necessary. A Loud “Whoop” After Probable cause is defective Replace starter motor. Engine Starts While Starter overrunning clutch. Motor is Engaged “Rumble”, “Growl”, or Probable cause is bent or Replace starter motor. “Knock” as Starter Motor unbalanced starter motor Coasts to Stop After armature. Engine Starts.

This vehicle was designed for starter mounting without shims. If single or double shims have been added to correct a noise or engagement problem, they should be reinstalled in their original positions to ensure proper pinion to flywheel assembly engagement. REMOVAL 1. 2. 3. 4. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle. Disconnect exhaust crossover pipe at manifolds. Remove starter motor mounting bolts and lower starter motor assembly, Fig. 1. Disconnect electrical connectors from starter motor assembly, then remove starter motor assembly. INSTALLATION Before connecting electrical connectors, tighten inner nuts on the solenoid terminals. If the nuts are not tight, the solenoid cap may be damaged during installation of connectors. Torque inner nut of BAT terminal to 80 inch lbs. 1. Connect electrical connectors to starter motor assembly, then torque BAT terminal nut to 85 inch lbs. and S terminal nut to 25 inch lbs. 2. Install starter motor assembly and torque mounting bolts to 40 ft. lbs. 3. Measure pinion to flywheel clearance, Fig. 2, adding shims if necessary. 4. Connect exhaust crossover pipe to manifolds, then lower vehicle and connect

Removal 1. Open the engine compartment and fit paintwork protection sheets. 2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Remove the battery cover. 3. Place the vehicle on a ramp. 4. Working from below the vehicle, remove the power steering rack for access. 5. Disconnect the starter motor main terminal. Reposition the rubber boot from the main terminal. Remove the nut from the starter motor main terminal. Disconnect the main cable from the terminal. 6. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid terminal. Reposition the rubber boot from the terminal. Remove the nut from the solenoid terminal. Disconnect the cable from the terminal. 7. Remove the starter motor securing bolts. Remove the upper securing bolt. Preferably, use a short 13 mm spanner or a Snap On Half Moon spanner CMX1113 to initially loosen the bolt. (Refer to the next step). Remove the lower securing bolt. Carefully remove the starter motor. 8. The upper bolt may be removed (after loosening) using a 3/8′ square drive 13 mm socket, extensions and U.J as shown. Installation 1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter motor securing bolts to 35-48 Nm. 2. Refit the steering rack as detailed in Operation 57.10.01. Refill the reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the steering system. 3. Lower the ramp. Remove the protection sheets and close the engine compartment cover. 4. Connect the battery and fit the battery cover. Reset the radio information and the clock.

Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. 2. Remove the upper two bolts from the intake manifold bracket. 3. Raise vehicle and support. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Remove the two bolts on the clutch release cylinder and push aside (M/T). Remove the lower two intake manifold bracket bolts. Remove intake manifold bracket. Remove the two upper starter bolts. Remove the lower starter bolt. 9. 10. 11. 12. Pull the starter from the clutch (M/T) / torque converter (A/T) housing and prop in place. Lower the vehicle. From above, disconnect the S-terminal connector. Remove nut and lock washer on B-terminal. 13. 14. 15. 16. Disconnect B-terminal. Raise and support vehicle. Push transmission wire harness aside. Remove starter. Installation 1. Place starter in engine well. 2. Lower vehicle. 3. Connect B-terminal wire. 4. Install washer and nut on B-terminal and tighten. 5. Connect S-terminal. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Lower intake manifold bracket into position and insert the two upper bolts. Raise and support vehicle. Place starter in position. Insert the two upper starter bolts. Insert lower starter bolt. NOTE:: The starter may require adjustment after installation. If required, rotate the starter slightly to provide proper clearance. 11. Tighten the three starter bolts. Tighten the bolts to 27 – 40 lb-ft (37 – 54 N.m). 12. Insert lower bracket bolts and tighten. Tighten the bolts to 27 – 40 lb-ft (37 – 54 N.m). 13. Position clutch release cylinder and install bolts (M/T). Tighten the bolts to 27 – 40 lb-ft (37 – 54 N.m). 14. Lower vehicle.
