ENGINE – 5.0L – NEW TORQUE-TO-YIELD CYLINDER HEAD BOLT KIT AND NEW PROCEDURES – SERVICE TIP FORD: 1988 THUNDERBIRD 1988-91 CROWN VICTORIA 1988-95 MUSTANG 1991-93 THUNDERBIRD LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 COUGAR 1988-90 TOWN CAR 1988-91 GRAND MARQUIS 1988-92 MARK VII 1991-93 COUGAR LIGHT TRUCK: 1988-95 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES ISSUE: In 1992, the type of cylinder head bolts used on the 5.0L engines was changed to the torque-to-yield bolts. Depending on the build date of the engine, the 1992 model year engines came with either torque-to-yield bolts or standard torque, not a combination of the two (2). In 1993, torque-to-yield bolts were used on all 5.OL engines. ACTION: Refer to the following for proper bolt identification, usage and torque specifications. ^ The two (2) types of bolts being used are physically different. Refer to Figure 1. ^ The standard torque bolt is a non-flanged hex head bolt. ^ The torque-to-yield bolt is a flanged head bolt. ^ The two (2) types of bolts may be used on any of the 5.0L engines. ^ The bolts must be all the same style on each cylinder head. CAUTION: DO NOT USE BOTH TYPES OF CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ON ONE (1) CYLINDER HEAD. EACH CYLINDER HEAD MUST HAVE ALL OF ONE (1) TYPE OF RETAINING BOLT: STANDARD TORQUE OR TORQUE-TO-YIELD. The torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts will be available only in a packaged kit (F3ZZ-6065-E). The kit will contain the following: Five (5) 7/16-14×3.94 Bolts Five (5) 7/16-14×2.49 Bolts One (1) 3/8-16×7/16-3.93 Stud One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. # 6605) Some applications use a various quantity of studs for fastening of items to the cylinder head. TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE NON-FLANGED STANDARD HEX HEAD BOLTS, TIGHTEN IN TWO (2) STEPS AS FOLLOWS:

1. Install cylinder head. A. Place cylinder head on cylinder block. (a) Place a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block. CAUTION: Be careful of the installation direction. (b) Place the cylinder head on the cylinder head gasket. B. Install cylinder head bolts. NOTE: The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 2 progressive steps (steps (b) and (d)). If any cylinder head bolt is broken or deformed, replace it. (a) Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head bolts. Cylinder Head Installation Install and uniformly tighten the 10 cylinder head bolts and plate washers in several passes, in the sequence shown. Torque: 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.) If any one of the cylinder head bolts does not meet the torque specification, replace the cylinder head bolt. (c) Mark the front of the cylinder head bolt head with paint. (d) Retighten the cylinder head bolts 90° in the numerical order shown. (e) Check that the painted mark is now at a 90° angle to the front. Install the 2 bolts holding the water bypass pipe to the cylinder head. Torque to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.) (g) Connect the camshaft position sensor connector. 2. Install spark plug tubes. (a) Clean the cylinder head tube holes of any residual adhesive, oil or foreign particles. Remove any oil with kerosene or gasoline. (b) Screw the threads of the spark plug tube coated with adhesive into the cylinder head.

COMPONENT DISASSEMBLY 1. Drain the coolant and disconnect the upper radiator hose. 2. Remove the breather hose (between the air cleaner and the head cover). 3. Remove the air-intake hose. 4. Remove the vacuum hose, fuel hose and coolant hose 5. Remove the cables from the spark plugs. The cables should be removed by holding the boot portion. 6. Remove the ignition coil. 7. Remove the power steering oil pump and bracket. 8. Remove the intake manifold. 9. Remove the heat protector and exhaust manifold assembly. 10. Remove the coolant pump pulley and the crankshaft pulley. 11. Remove the timing belt cover. 12. Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley. 13. Remove the timing belt. 14. Remove the head cover and cam carrier assembly. 15. Remove the cylinder head assembly. The cylinder head bolts should be removed by using Special Tool, Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench, in the sequence as shown in the illustration in two or three steps. 16. Remove the gasket pieces from cylinder block top surface and cylinder head bottom surface. NOTE: Make sure that the gasket pieces do not fall in the engine INSPECTION 1. Clean all components. 2. Remove gasket fragments, dirt, oil, grease, carbon, moisture, residue, and other foreign materials. CYLINDER HEAD
