Front Pad Removal Before replacing the pads, inspect the master cylinder to ensure that it has not been topped off before retracting the pistons into the caliper bores. The front brakes are a floating dual-piston caliper type, the pistons are phenolic. The caliper bridge bolts have a guide pin and bolt that attach the caliper to the bracket. Removing the bottom bolt allows the caliper to be pivoted out of the bracket. Using a special piston retractor designed to push evenly on the dual pistons is highly recommended. The pads are retained in the bracket with anti-rattle clips. To release the pad from the clip, there are tabs at the ends of pad that are depressed to release the pad. The pads have noise dampening material attached to the back of the pads. Front Pad Install Inspect the dust boots for damage and replace if necessary. Inspect the guide pins and replace and lubricate if necessary. The boot is to be seated in the grooves of the caliper bracket and guide pin. Install new anti-rattle clips and pads, rotate the caliper and align the flats on the guide pin to the mounting ear of the caliper. Torque the guide pin bolts to 64 Nm (30 ft/lbs). The caliper bracket bolts on this vehicle use high strength thread locker to hold it in place (it is the “red stuff”). Make sure to clean the old thread locker material off the threads with denatured alcohol before putting new thread locker on. The bolts should be tightened to a whopping 129 ft/lbs! Rear Pads Inspect the dust boots for damage and replace the caliper if necessary. Inspect the guide pins and replace and lubricate if necessary. The boot is to be seated in the grooves of the caliper bracket and guide pin. Install new anti-rattle clips and pads rotate the caliper and align the flats on the guide pin to the mounting ear of the caliper. Torque the guide pin bolts to 64 Nm (30 ft/lbs). Like in the front, the rear caliper brackets use thread locker. Make sure to clean threads. Then torque the bolts to 148 ft/lbs. Rotor and Hub Inspection Specifications: Front Brakes

Brake caliper housing with integral parking brake on the rear axle. To ensure that the parking brake works perfectly, when a new brake caliper is fitted, and every time the brake pads are replaced the piston must be adjusted as described below: Removal: Release / unclip the handbrake cable Remove screw plug (a) – see Fig. 1 Slacken the hexagon socket screw (Fig. 2). Withdraw the piston until it stops moving. Installation: Screw in the hexagon socket screw in a clockwise direction (Figure 3) until the brake shoes touch the brake disc and the brake disc becomes difficult to turn. Then slacken the adjuster screw by one third to half of a turn (Brake disc will turn easily – see Fig. 4). Screw in and tighten screw plug (1) – Fig. 5. Attach brake cable and adjust it in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Some 2009 – 2010 model year Corolla vehicles may exhibit premature pad wear. Use the following replacement pads to address this condition. Repair Procedure 1. Remove the front wheel. 2. Inspect the front pads for any irregular wear by loosening the two bolts on the brake caliper assembly. 3. Remove the brake caliper assembly and support it to prevent damage to the ?exible line. 4. Inspect the front pads for wear. If the pads are worn excessively, then replace the pads with the new part number. 5. Add disc brake caliper grease to both sides of the pad support clips and the anti-squeal shims. Figure 3. Figure 4. 2 1 1 No. 1 Disc Brake Pad Support Plate 2 No. 2 Disc Brake Pad Support Plate : 1 1 Add Grease Here (Pad Support Clips) NOTE Install the new anti-squeal shims and the pad wear indicators to the brake pads in the correct position to ensure quiet operation. Figure 5. : 1 1 Add Grease to These Surfaces 6. Install the pads into the brake caliper support assembly. 7. Install the brake caliper and tighten the caliper bolts. Torque: 34 N*m (347 kgf*cm, 25 ft*lbf) 8. Install the wheel and tighten the wheel nuts. Torque: 103 N*m (1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft*lbf) 9. Road test the vehicle to con?rm that there are no further issues with the brake system.

Introduction Some 2010 Prius vehicles may experience rear brake squeak when backing up or moving forward during the ?rst few brake applications when the brakes are cold. An updated rear brake shim kit is available to reduce the likelihood of this condition occurring. Repair Procedure 1. Test drive the vehicle to con?rm the squeak is coming from the rear brakes. The condition occurs more frequently when backing up during light brake pedal application after cold soak. 2. Remove rear brake shims. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) 2010 Prius Repair Manual: Brake – Brake (Rear) Brake: Rear Brake: Removal 3. Clean the rear brake pad backing plates with a clean shop towel and apply a small amount of black disc brake grease to the backing plate of each rear brake pad. NOTE Make sure disc brake grease is not applied to the lining of the rear brake pads. 4. Install the No. 1 Anti-squeal shims. Install the No. 2 Anti-squeal shims. Figure 3. 5. Using the Variable Pin Wrench (SST 09960-10010), slowly rotate the caliper piston until the piston groove is positioned as shown in the illustration below. 6. Install new rear brake anti-squeal shims with brake pads into the rear caliper assemblies brackets. Refer to (TIS), 2010 Prius Repair Manual: Brake – Brake (Rear) Brake: Rear Brake: Installation NOTE • When installing the rear disc brake caliper assembly on the rear disc brake caliper mounting bracket, ensure the protrusion on the brake pad is centered in the caliper piston groove. • It is important to ensure the protrusion is not contacting the outer edges of the caliper piston groove. (both sides) 7. Road test the vehicle to con?rm the condition has been reduced.
