CAUTION: The hub bearing could be damaged if it is subjected to the vehicle weight, such as when moving the vehicle with the drive shaft removed. Therefore, if it is absolutely necessary to place the vehicle weight on the hub bearing, first support it with Special Service Tool (SST) 09608 – 16042 (09608 – 02021, 09608 – 02041 PROCEDURE 1. Remove front wheel and front fender apron seal. [Torque: 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.)] 2. Remove drive shaft lock nut. a. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap. b. With applying brakes, remove the nut. [Torque: 294 Nm (217 ft. lbs.)] See TSB DL001-98, 3-6-98. 3. Drain ATF. 4. Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle. 5. Disconnect lower ball joint from lower suspension arm. 6. Disconnect drive shaft from axle hub. a. Using a plastic hammer, disconnect drive shaft from axle hub. CAUTION: Cover the drive shaft boot with cloth to protect it from damage. b. Push the front axle hub toward the outside of the vehicle, and separate the drive shaft from the axle hub. 7. Remove LH drive shaft. a. Using a brass bar and hammer, remove the drive shaft. Installation Note: – Coat gear oil to the inboard joint shaft and differential case sliding surface. – Before installing the drive shaft, set the snap ring opening side facing downward. – Whether or not the inboard joint shaft is making contact with the pinion shaft can be known by the sound or feeling when driving it in. – After installation: – check that there is 2 – 3 mm (0.08 – 0.12 inch). of play in the axial direction. – check that the drive shaft cannot be removed by hand. b. Using a screwdriver, remove the snap ring from the inboard joint shaft

FRONT AXLE LH HUB BOLT REPLACEMENT 1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL 2. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY LH 3. REMOVE FRONT DISC 4. REMOVE FRONT AXLE LH HUB BOLT a. Using SST and a screwdriver or an equivalent to hold the front axle hub, remove the front axle LH hub bolt. SST 09628-1001 5. INSTALL FRONT AXLE LH HUB BOLT a. Install a washer and nut to a new front axle LH hub bolt as shown in the illustration. b. Using a screwdriver to hold the front axle hub, install the hub bolt by torquing the nut. 6. INSTALL FRONT DISC 7. INSTALL FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSY LH 8. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

2004–2010 Toyota 4Runner Front Seat Squeak Noise

Some customers may experience a squeak noise due to contact between the seat track locating pin(s) and the ?oor pan location hole(s). The following procedure describes the repair method to correct this condition. 1. Disconnect the negative (–) battery terminal. 2. Remove the plastic front seat track covers, use a Plastic Pry Tool to disengage the claws and carefully remove the plastic seat track covers. NOTE Refer to the appropriate Toyota Repair Manual for each model for detailed instructions on how to remove the plastic seat track covers. 4. Remove the LH front seat assembly. A. Move the seatback to the full upright position. B. Remove the four (4) seat track securing bolts. C. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the complete seat assembly. 5. Remove the seat track locating pins. A. With the seat removed from the vehicle, tilt the seat assembly backward to gain access to the seat track locating pins. B. Use a power cut-off tool to cut off the two (2) locating pins leaving 2 mm (0.1 in.) or less of each pin. NOTE • Do NOT permit the power cut-off tool to contact the seat track. ONLY cut off the shaft of the pin (near the base of the seat track). • The seat track locating pins’ function is to ease installation during manufacturing and does NOT provide any other function. Figure 5.. 6. Clean and paint bare metal surfaces. A. Remove any metal shavings from the seat track/seat assembly. B. Clean the bare metal surface of the remainder of the seat track locating pin with wax, grease, and silicone remover. C. To prevent corrosion, coat any bare metal surfaces still attached to the seat track with a brush-on type paint. 7. Install LH front seat assembly. A. Place the seat on the cabin ?oor. B. Reconnect all electrical connectors under the seat. C. Install all four (4) seat track retaining bolts (?ngertight). D. Tighten the two (2) front seat track attaching bolts. NOTE The bolt torque speci?cation varies by model. Please refer to the Repair Manual for the correct bolt torque for the model you are working on. E. Tighten the two (2) rear seat track attaching bolts. NOTE The bolt torque speci?cation varies by model. Please refer to the Repair Manual for the correct bolt torque for the model you are working on. F. Reinstall all plastic seat track covers. 8. Repeat steps 1 – 6 for the RH seat assembly. 9. Reconnect the negative (–) battery terminal. 10. Test power seat operation and seat heater (if equipped) for proper operation. 11. Initialize front passenger occupant classi?cation system and re-initialize any other power systems. Refer to the applicable model and model year repair manual initialization procedures. 12. Inspect SRS warning light operation. 13. Test drive vehicle and con?rm that the seat squeak has been eliminated.

2008–2009 Toyota Highlander Intermittent No Crank/No Start

Some Highlander, Matrix, and RAV4 vehicles may intermittently exhibit a “no crank” condition. The engine can usually be started after moving the shift lever to the Neutral position or by cycling the shift lever in and out of the Park position. A revised neutral start switch assembly is available to address this condition. Repair Procedure 1. Replace the neutral start switch assembly. Removal 1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove shock absorber. See LOWER CONTROL ARM & BALL JOINT . Remove hub grease cap. Remove ABS speed sensor and wire harness clamp from steering knuckle. Remove brakeline bracket from steering knuckle. Remove the bolt and separate the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle. Using Special Tool (09023-00100), disconnect the brake tube from the front disc brake caliper assembly. Remove the bolt and separate the brake tube bracket from the steering knuckle. Remove the 2 bolts and front disc brake caliper assembly. Remove rotor. 2. On 4WD models, using a screwdriver and a hammer, remove the front axle hub grease cap. Remove the cotter pin and a lock cap. Remove the front axle hub nut. On all models, remove the nut and separate the stabilizer link assembly from the steering knuckle. Remove the cotter pin. Using Special Tool (09628- 62011), separate the tie rod end sub-assembly from the steering knuckle. 3. Remove 2 lower ball joint bolts, and disconnect lower ball joint. Remove upper ball joint, cotter pin and retaining nut. Using ball joint separator, separate upper ball joint from knuckle. On 4WD models, using a plastic hammer, separate the front axle hub from the front drive shaft. Remove the front axle hub sub- assembly. On all models, remove steering knuckle with hub. Installation To install, reverse removal procedure. Clean bolt threads. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Depress brake pedal several times. Check front wheel alignment. Ensure ABS speed sensor has a good signal.
