TSB SB05-05-5004 Shift Lock Solenoid ISSUE DATE: MAY 2005 Affected Vehicles 2002-2004 Isuzu Axiom (UP) 1998-2004 Isuzu Rodeo (UE) and Rodeo Sport (UA) Service Information Use the following steps to remove and replace the Shift Lock Solenoid. Service Procedure 1. Access the Shift Lock Solenoid by removing the Center, Front, Rear Console Assemblies, Selector Lever Knob, and Cover Assembly. Refer to the Selector Lever section in the Service Manual. 2. Set parking brake, move Selector Lever to lowest gear, and remove the Shift Lock Cable. 3. Remove the two screws securing the Shift Lock Solenoid to the Selector Lever subassembly. Disconnect the Shift Lock Solenoid 2-pin connector. 4. Disconnect the 1-40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) six-pin connector and slide the female connector off bracket. Remove the Terminal Position Assurance (TPA) Lock from the connector. Locate the two blue wires in position 1 and 3 on the female connector. With appropriate tool (shown above), apply light pressure upward on the connector locking tab while gently pulling on the blue wire to release. Note :Never use force to remove a terminal from a connector. 5. Insert the two blues wires from the replacement Shift Lock Solenoid into the 1- 40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) female connector. It does not matter which blue wire is inserted into the 1 and 3 position. Gently tug the blue wires to make sure they are secure. NOTE :D iscard the extra 2-pin connector sub harness included with replacement Shift Lock Solenoid P/N 8-97181-068-2. 6. Reconnect the Shift Lock Solenoid 2-pin connector and reattach the two screws securing the Shift Lock Solenoid to the selector lever subassembly. 7. Reconnect the 1-40 (Rodeo) or 1-3 (Axiom) six-pin connector and slide the female connector onto the bracket. 8. Reinstall the Selector Lever Knob, Cover Assembly, Center, Front, and Rear Console Assemblies. Refer to the Selector Lever section in the Service Manual. 9. Check Shift Lock operation: a. With ignition key in “Lock” position, Selector lever should not move from “P” position. b. With ignition key in “ON” position and brake pedal depressed. Selector lever can be moved out of “P” position. c. Key can be removed only when turned to “LOCK” position and selector lever is in “P” position.

Diagnostic Fault Information Circuit Switch Side Supply Voltage Relay Door Lock/Unlock Signal Door Latch Control Driver Door Lock Switch Ground Passenger Front Door Lock Switch Ground BCM Ground 1. Door Lock Malfunction 2. Door Lock Switch Malfunction Circuit/System Description The DR LCK fuse supplies battery positive voltage to the body control module BCM for the door lock system. The BCM supplies and monitors a reference voltage to the door lock switch through the door lock switch lock/unlock signal circuit. The door lock switch also receives a constant ground source. If a door lock switch is placed in the lock position, the reference voltage is taken directly to ground and the BCM senses 0.0 volts on the signal circuit. If a door lock switch is placed in the unlock position, the reference voltage is taken to ground through a 1.5k ohm resistor that is internal to the door lock switches and senses approximately 2.9 volts on the signal circuit. This is how the BCM determines what portion of the door lock switch was activated. The BCM, upon receipt of a door lock switch lock or unlock signal, will switch the appropriate door lock actuator control circuits to battery positive voltage. The opposing side of the door lock actuators are connected to ground internally within the BCM through the other door lock actuator control circuit and the doors will lock or unlock appropriately. Vehicles without keyless entry have two internal drivers in the BCM to control the door lock actuators. All door lock and all door unlock. Vehicles equipped with keyless entry have three internal drivers in the BCM. Driver door unlock, passenger door unlock and all door lock. This is done to isolate the driver door lock actuator so it can be unlocked by itself using the keyless entry transmitter.

1. Vehicle Preparation. (FJ Cruiser shown) (a) Vehicle must be on level ground and not on an incline/decline. (b) Fully engage the parking brake. (c) Remove the shift lock release cover. Save for re-use. (Fig. 1-1) (d) Push in the shift lock release button. (Fig. 1-2) (e) Place the shifter in lowest gear. (Fig. 1-3) 2. Remove OE Shift Knob. (a) Remove the OE shift knob by turning counter-clock-wise. (b) Discard the OE shift knob 3. Install the Shift Knob. (a) Install the shift knob by turning clock-wise. (1) When fully installed there should be a 1/2” +/- 3/32” (12mm +/- 2mm) gap between the bottom of the shift knob shaft and the shift gate top surface. (2) The “barrel” of the shift knob should be oriented across the vehicle. (3) Place the shift lever in “Park”. (4) Replace the shift lock release cover. (5) Clean the shift knob with a non-scratch cloth.

1. To assemble bearing housing, proceed as follows: a. Using a suitable socket, press bearings into bearing housing. b. Install lock shoe springs, lock shoes and shoe pin into bearing housing. c. Install shoe release lever, spring and pin. d. Install sector drive shaft and snap ring into housing. e. Install lock bolt and engage bolt with sector cam. f. Install rack and spring. Block tooth on rack should engage block tooth on sector. g. Install tilt release lever. h. Install lock bolt spring and retaining bolt. Torque bolt to 35 inch lbs. On C, G and K models, install shift lever spring into housing. On Caballero and El Camino models, install shift lever spring into shift bowl. Install bearing support lock plate and wave washer. On C, G and K models, carefully install shift tube into lower end of steering column jacket. Install wobble plate end of tool J-23073 into upper end of shift tube. Install adapter over end of tube, seating it against the lock plate. Place nut onto threaded portion of tool and pull shift tube into housing. Remove tool. On Caballero and El Camino models, install bearing support thrust washer and retaining ring. Carefully install shift tube into lower portion of steering column jacket. Align shift tube key with shift bowl keyway. Using tool J-23073, pull shift tube into the shift bowl. Install thrust washer and retaining ring. Install actuator rod through support hole between shift bowl and steering column jacket. Install bearing support. Align bearing support “V” with “V” on steering column jacket. Install attaching bolts through support and into lock plate. Torque attaching bolts to 60 inch lbs. Align lower bearing adapter or bushing with notches in steering column jacket. Install lower bearing, bearing reinforcement and retaining clips. Ensure clips align with reinforcement slots on steering column jacket and adapter assembly. Install centering spheres and anti-lash spring onto upper shaft. Install lower steering shaft assembly. On C, G and K models, install steering shaft assembly into shift tube. Install ignition switch actuator rod through shift lever housing. On Caballero and El Camino models, position shift bowl into Park (counterclockwise to stop). Install ignition switch actuator rod between shift bowl and steering column jacket. Assemble bearing housing over steering shaft and engage rack over actuator rod end. On Caballero and El Camino models, position access hole of bearing housing over dimmer switch actuator rod end. While holding the locking shoes in the disengaged position, install bearing housing over steering shaft until pivot pin holes align with holes in support assembly. Install pivot pins. Place bearing housing in the full up (tilt) position. Install tilt lever spring guide, spring and spring retainer. 1. NOTE: To prevent cable damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable assembly between the steering column shift tube bracket and the steering column bracket. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever. 2. Carefully lift the locking tab and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column bracket. 2. Disconnect the cable push pin from the stud in the bulkhead. 3. Push the rubber grommet and transmission shift cable through the bulkhead. 4. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02. 4R100 transmission 5. NOTE: To prevent shift cable assembly damage, do not apply force to the transmission shift cable between the manual control lever and the transmission shift cable bracket. Remove the transmission shift cable from the transmission. 1. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the manual control lever. 2. Depress the lock tabs to release the transmission shift cable and disconnect the transmission shift cable from the transmission shift cable bracket. 6. Remove the shift cable bracket from the transmission. 1. Remove the bolts. 2. Remove the shift cable bracket. 7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the shift cable.
