1994 Ford Mustang A/C Evaporator Housing Removal and Installation

1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) . 2. Remove two console armrest mounting access covers (047A62) at rear of console panel (045A36) (snaps out) to gain access to armrest retaining bolts. 3. Remove four armrest-to-floor bracket retaining bolts and remove armrest assembly (snaps out of console). 4. Remove console panel gear shift plate (044G24) (snaps out). On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, shift boot is attached to bottom of finish panel. Remove shift knob and slide boot and console panel gear shift plate up shift lever to remove. 5. To remove top finish panel position emergency brake lever in the UP position. Remove four retaining screws and lift top finish panel up. Disconnect necessary wire connectors. 6. Remove two console-to-rear floor bracket retaining screws. 7. Insert a small screwdriver into two notches at bottom of front upper finish panel and snap out. 8. If the vehicle has a radio chassis (18806) , the radio chassis must be removed. Refer to Section 15-01. If the vehicle doesn’t have a radio chassis , use a small screwdriver and pry radio cover finish panel out of console. 9. Flex glove compartment bin tabs inward. Drop down glove compartment (06010) assembly. Remove two console-to-instrument panel retaining screws. 10. Remove four console bracket retaining screws. Remove console panel from vehicle. 11. Remove three bolts retaining steering column opening cover (3A673) and reinforcement panel. Remove cover. 12. Remove steering column opening reinforcement by removing two bolts. 13. Remove two bolts retaining steering column opening reinforcement and remove reinforcement. 14. Remove six steering column retaining nuts (two retaining the hood release mechanism and four retaining column to lower brake pedal support). Lower steering column to floor. 15. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds (3530) and disconnect wiring from turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) . 16. Remove steering column through bolt and nut on engine compartment side of cowl panel. Remove steering column from vehicle. 17. Remove brake pedal support nut. 18. Snap out instrument panel defroster opening grille (044E82) . 19. Remove screws from speaker covers. Snap out speaker covers. 20. Remove front screws retaining RH and LH scuff plates at cowl side trim panels. 21. Remove RH and LH cowl side trim panels. 22. Disconnect wiring at RH cowl side. 23. Remove cowl side retaining bolts (one each side). 24. Remove five cowl top screws attachments. 25. Gently pull instrument panel (04320) away from RH side of cowl panel. Disconnect speedometer cable, air conditioning controls and wire connectors. 26. Place a drain pan or suitable container under the heater water hose connections at the cowl panel. 27. Disconnect heater water hoses (18472) from heater core tubes and plug heater water hoses with suitable 5/8-inch and 3/4-inch plugs. Cap heater core tubes to prevent coolant loss from heater core (18476) during removal of heater case. 28. Remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case support bracket (19A639) to cowl top panel. 29. Disconnect vacuum supply supply hose (black) from A/C vacuum supply in engine compartment. 30. Working under the hood (16612) , remove nut retaining heater case to cowl panel. 31. Inside passenger compartment, remove screw retaining A/C evaporator case mounting bracket (19A865) to cowl top panel. 32. Remove one screw retaining A/C evaporator case mounting bracket below heater case to cowl panel. 33. Carefully pull heater case from cowl panel and remove heater case assembly from vehicle. 34. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Check operation of all components. 35. After repairs have been completed, check the coolant level in the radiator (8005) and in the radiator coolant recovery reservoir (8A080) . Fill as required with the recommended coolant mixture.

FRONT DOOR TRIM PANEL NOTE: Driver side shown in illustration, passenger side similar. Fig. 6: Identifying Front Door Trim Panel Components 1. Remove the mirror access panel. 2. Remove the door trim panel screw located behind the mirror access panel. 3. Remove the 2 door trim panel screws located in the door pull. 4. Remove the window regulator control switch panel. Disconnect the electrical connectors. 5. Remove the door trim panel screw located beneath the window regulator control switch panel. 6. Remove the door trim panel screw located behind the mirror access panel. Remove the door trim panel screw located at the rear-most of the front door trim panel. 8. Remove the 2 hex-head screws located at the bottom of the front door trim panel. 9. Carefully raise and remove the front door trim panel. 10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

1. Remove rear seats. Refer to Section 01-10. 2. Remove coat hook screw and coat hook cover (29024). Coat Hook 3. Remove front door scuff plate (13209) as outlined. 4. Remove front safety belt bezel. Remove front safety belt guide bolt from the B-pillar. 5. Remove front safety belt retaining bolt from front floor pan (11135). 6. Remove upper quarter trim panel (31012) by carefully prying off front edge of lower quarter trim panel and then rear edge. 7. Remove rear safety belt from slot in quarter trim panel. 8. To remove lower quarter trim panel, remove three push pins at rear, one at bottom and one at top of quarter trim panel and pull rear of quarter trim panel out and forward. 9. Route front safety belt retractor and tongue (611B08) through opening in front safety belt retractor and tongue. 10. Remove quarter trim panel from vehicle. 11. Remove quarter trim panel shield if necessary. 12. To install, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten safety belt mounting bolts to 30-40 Nm (23-29 lb-ft). Upper Quarter Trim Panel Trim Panel, Quarter—Convertible Removal and Installation 1. Remove rear seats. Refer to Section 01-10. 2. Remove front door scuff plate (13208). 3. Remove upper radio speaker grille (18978) by pulling outward. 4. Remove pushpins at rear and bottom of quarter trim panel. 5. Remove pushpin from top of quarter trim panel at top well area. 6. Remove front safety belt retaining bolt at floor pan. 7. Pull out and forward on quarter trim panel. 8. Remove clip on safety belt opening. Remove front safety belt retractor and tongue. Feed front safety belt retractor and tongue through radio speaker opening. Remove quarter trim panel. 9. Remove quarter trim panel shield if necessary. 10. To install, reverse Removal procedure. NOTE: Before starting this procedure, be certain to turn the steering wheel until the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. Remove the trim from the right and left front door sills. Remove the trim from the left and right cowl side inner panels. Remove the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel. See: Steering Column Opening Cover and Knee Blocker Replacement Remove the two screws that secure the inside hood latch release handle to the instrument panel lower reinforcement and lower the release handle to the floor. Disconnect the driver side airbag module wire harness connector from the instrument panel wire harness at the instrument panel lower reinforcement. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the overdrive lockout switch wire harness connector from the instrument panel wire harness near the instrument panel lower reinforcement. Remove the steering column from the vehicle, but do not remove the driver side airbag module, the steering wheel, or the switches from the steering column. Be certain that the steering wheel is locked and secured from rotation to prevent the loss of clockspring centering. Refer to Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Column/Service and Repair. See: Steering and Suspension/Steering/Steering Column/Service and Repair From under the driver side of the instrument panel, perform the following: a. Remove the screw from the center of the headlamp and dash to instrument panel bulkhead wire harness connector and disconnect the connector. b. Disconnect the two body wire harness connectors from the two instrument panel wire harness connectors that are secured to the outboard side of the instrument panel bulkhead connector. c. Disconnect the three wire harness connectors (one from the body wire harness, and two from the headlamp and dash wire harness) from the three junction block connector receptacles located closest to the dash panel. d. Unsnap the plastic retainer clip that secures the park brake release linkage rod to the lever on the back side of the park brake release handle and disengage the linkage rod end from the lever on the handle. e. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the stop lamp switch connector receptacle. f. Disconnect the vacuum harness connector located near the left end of the heater-A/C housing. Remove the center support bracket from the instrument panel. See: Instrument Panel Center Support Bracket Replacement Remove the screw that secures the instrument panel wire harness ground eyelets to the left side of the Airbag Control Module (ACM) mount on the floor panel transmission tunnel. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness connector from the ACM connector receptacle. Remove the glove box from the instrument panel. Refer to Body and Frame/Interior Trim/Glove Compartment/Service and Repair. See: Glove Compartment/Service and Repair Reaching through the instrument panel glove box opening, perform the following: a. Disconnect the two halves of the radio antenna coaxial cable connector near the center of the lower instrument panel glove box opening. b. Disengage the antenna half of the radio antenna coaxial cable from the retainer clip near the outboard side of the lower instrument panel glove box opening. c. Disconnect the blower motor wire harness connector located near the heater-A/C housing support brace on the inboard side of the instrument panel glove box opening. From under the passenger side of the instrument panel, perform the following: a. If the vehicle is so equipped, disconnect the two instrument panel wire harness connectors from the Infinity speaker amplifier connector receptacles on the right cowl side inner panel. b. Remove the nut that secures the instrument panel wire harness radio ground eyelet to the stud on the right cowl side inner panel. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE 1. Remove the I/P trim panel. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions. Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions . 2. Remove the center console, if equipped. 3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 4. Remove the driver side knee bolster. 5. Remove the lower I/P trim panel. 6. Remove the passenger side air bag module. 7. Remove the radio. 8. Remove the HVAC control. 9. Remove the accessory switch housing. 10. Remove the left air louver housing. 11. Remove the steering column. 12. Remove the CIM, if equipped. 13. Remove the remote control door lock receiver module, if equipped. 14. Remove the data link connector from the I/P. 15. Remove the park brake release lever from the I/P. 16. Remove the I/P cluster. 17. Remove both front window air duct from the I/P assembly. 18. Remove the harness from the I/P. 19. Remove the I/P assembly retaining nuts (4) and bolts (3). 20. Remove all harness hold down retainers from the I/P assembly. 21. Remove the I/P assembly from the vehicle. 22. Remove the I/P upper brackets. 23. Disconnect all the electrical connectors from the wiring harness junction block. 24. Remove the transfer case control module from the bracket, if equipped. 25. Remove the antenna cable from the cross car duct. 26. Remove the cross car duct. 27. Remove the amplifier, if equipped.
