NOTE: NOTE: Whenever a torque strut bolt(s) is loosened, this procedure must be performed. Upper and lower torque struts need to be adjusted together to assure proper engine positioning and engine mount loading. To prevent minimal upward lifting of engine, floor jack must be positioned as shown. See Fig. 1 . 1. Remove pencil strut. See Fig. 2 . Loosen upper and lower torque strut attaching bolt at suspension crossmember and shock tower bracket. Engine position may now be adjusted by positioning a suitable floor jack on the forward edge of transmission bellhousing. See Fig. 1 . 2. With engine supported, remove upper and lower torque struts attachment bolt(s) at shock tower bracket and suspension crossmember. See Fig. 3 . Verify that torque struts are free to move within shock tower bracket and crossmember. Reinstall torque strut bolt(s), but DO NOT tighten. 3. Carefully apply upward force, allowing upper engine to rotate rearward until distance between center of rearmost attaching stud on engine mount bracket (point “A”) and center of hole for washer hose clip on shock tower bracket (point “B”) is 4.7″ (119 mm). See Fig. 4 . CAUTION: Engine must be held in position with jack until both upper and lower torque strut bolts are tightened. 4. With engine held at proper position, tighten both upper and lower torque strut bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install pencil strut, and tighten nuts to specification. Remove floor jack.

ENGINE – 5.0L – NEW TORQUE-TO-YIELD CYLINDER HEAD BOLT KIT AND NEW PROCEDURES – SERVICE TIP FORD: 1988 THUNDERBIRD 1988-91 CROWN VICTORIA 1988-95 MUSTANG 1991-93 THUNDERBIRD LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 COUGAR 1988-90 TOWN CAR 1988-91 GRAND MARQUIS 1988-92 MARK VII 1991-93 COUGAR LIGHT TRUCK: 1988-95 BRONCO, ECONOLINE, F-150-350 SERIES ISSUE: In 1992, the type of cylinder head bolts used on the 5.0L engines was changed to the torque-to-yield bolts. Depending on the build date of the engine, the 1992 model year engines came with either torque-to-yield bolts or standard torque, not a combination of the two (2). In 1993, torque-to-yield bolts were used on all 5.OL engines. ACTION: Refer to the following for proper bolt identification, usage and torque specifications. ^ The two (2) types of bolts being used are physically different. Refer to Figure 1. ^ The standard torque bolt is a non-flanged hex head bolt. ^ The torque-to-yield bolt is a flanged head bolt. ^ The two (2) types of bolts may be used on any of the 5.0L engines. ^ The bolts must be all the same style on each cylinder head. CAUTION: DO NOT USE BOTH TYPES OF CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS ON ONE (1) CYLINDER HEAD. EACH CYLINDER HEAD MUST HAVE ALL OF ONE (1) TYPE OF RETAINING BOLT: STANDARD TORQUE OR TORQUE-TO-YIELD. The torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts will be available only in a packaged kit (F3ZZ-6065-E). The kit will contain the following: Five (5) 7/16-14×3.94 Bolts Five (5) 7/16-14×2.49 Bolts One (1) 3/8-16×7/16-3.93 Stud One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. # 6605) Some applications use a various quantity of studs for fastening of items to the cylinder head. TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE NON-FLANGED STANDARD HEX HEAD BOLTS, TIGHTEN IN TWO (2) STEPS AS FOLLOWS:

1. Install pressure feed tube. a. Torque the union bolt with a new gasket to 52 Nm (38 ft. lbs.). NOTE: Make sure the stopper of the tube is touching the front bracket, as shown, then torque the union bolt. b. Install the oil pressure switch to the union bolt, torque to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). 2. Install PS vane pump assembly with pressure feed tube. Temporarily tighten the 2 (A and B) bolts. 3. Install drive belt. a. Adjust drive belt tension. b. Using Special Service Tool (SST) 09249-63010, torque the A bolt to 29 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). NOTE: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.81 inch). c. Torque the B bolt to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). e. Connect the connector to the oil pressure switch.4. Connect pressure feed tube. a. Using SST 09631 – 22020, connect the tube, torque to 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.). NOTE: – Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 300 mm (11.81 inch). – This torque value is effective in case that SST is parallel to a torque wrench. b. Install the clamp to the tube. c. Install the 2 clamp plates and 2 holders to the tube. d. Install the clamp plate set bolt. e. Install the clamp plate set nut, torque to 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.). 5. Connect return hose. 6. 1. As of model year 2000, Volkswagen has changed the immobilizer system and the 7 digit PIN numbers are no longer available to the aftermarket. These vehicles all now use the Volkswagen GeKo (GeKo is a German acronym from the term Geheimnis und Komponentenschutz. In English this means Security and Component Protection. GeKo is the name Volkswagen used for the Security and Component Protection process.). Retrieval of immobilizer codes can still be performed with any Volkswagen compatible scan tool, but adapting new keys or any procedure that requires the 7 digit PIN number (replacing Engine Control Module (ECM) or Instrument Panel (IP)) requires the vehicle to be serviced by a Volkswagen dealer using the GeKo system. 2. Acquire any extra keys from the vehicle owner and try to start with different keys. Should the vehicle start with an alternative key this would indicate a bad key. A new key should be purchased and programmed at a VW authorized repair shop. 3. There have been good results by performing a vehicle cold re-boot for restoring immobilizer functionality without the need for programming due to logic locked modules. Disconnect both battery cables and momentarily touch them together. Leave disconnected for 15 minutes then reconnect. Attempt to start the vehicle.

CAUTION: The torque converter must be replaced if a transmission failure resulted in large amounts of metal or fiber contamination in the fluid. The torque converter is a hydraulic device that couples the engine crankshaft to the transmission. The torque converter consists of an outer shell with an internal turbine (1), a stator (3), an overrunning clutch, an impeller (2), and an electronically applied converter clutch. The converter clutch provides reduced engine speed and greater fuel economy when engaged. Clutch engagement also provides reduced transmission fluid temperatures. The converter clutch engages in third through fifth gears. The torque converter hub drives the transmission oil (fluid) pump. See Fig. 267. A turbine damper (6) has been added for some applications to help improve vehicle noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics.
