Remove components Caution! Remove the ignition key from the ignition switch before beginning Note! work. Crankshaft or camshaft must not be rotated under any circumstances more than is listed below. Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to the valves. upper timing belt cover. servo reservoir and expansion tank. Lift up and place on top of engine. Note! Take care not to spill servo oil from the bleed hole in the cap. Place paper wipe around the reservoir and then cover with a plastic bag as protection. Spilled servo oil is highly inflammable. auxiliaries belt. front camshaft belt cover. Position engine according to marking Raise the car. Remove right front wheel. Remove the nut for the cover in the fender liner. Install the upper camshaft belt cover. Turn crankshaft clockwise until the markings on the crankshaft and camshaft pulley correspond. Turn the crankshaft a further 1/4 turn clockwise and then back again until the markings correspond. The markings are illustrated. Remove upper camshaft belt cover.

1. Remove the wheel. Remove the ABS sensor. Detach the ABS sensor cable from the spring strut. 2. Remove both mounting bolts from the brake caliper. Hang up the brake caliper on the spring strut to prevent strain on brake hose.Do not disconnect brake hose. CAUTION: Manufacturer recommends replacing axle shaft bolt if original is removed. 3. Remove the bolt from end of axle shaft. See Fig. 7 . Remove the locating pin for the brake disc. Remove the brake disc. NOTE: Manufacturer recommends using NEW anti-roll bar link nut if original is removed. 4. Tap the end of the axle shaft into the hub approximately 0.4-0.6″ (10-15 mm) using a brass drift. Remove the upper link for the anti-roll bar from the spring strut. 5. Remove the steering arm (tie rod end) from the wheel spindle using Puller (999 5259), or equivalent.

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS All 1999 Protege (1.6L) with VINs lower than JM1 BJ222* X0 140057. All 1999 – 2000 Miata with (1.8L) VINs lower than JM1 NB353* Y0 155947. DESCRIPTION A rattling noise may be heard from the engine when depressing the clutch or when revving the engine in neutral. In extreme cases, customers may experience noise at all times. This concern can be caused by improperly machined number 4 main cap of cylinder blocks which may result in premature wear of the thrust bearing. Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure
1. Verify customer concern. 2. Using a dial indicator, measure and record the crankshaft end play as shown (Protege). Rotate the crankshaft 180o, and again measure and record the crankshaft end play. – If end play is 0.3mm or more, proceed to STEP 3. – If end play is still less then 0.3mm, refer to the Work- shop Manual for further diagnostics. 3. Replace the applicable part per the Workshop Manual: • Protege – Short Engine • Miata – Partial Engine Note • Completely clean any parts that will be reused. 4. Verify the repair.

A MacPherson strut-type suspension is used. Suspension consists of a vertically mounted strut and coil spring assembly. Top of strut assembly is mounted to chassis frame; bottom is mounted to a ball joint, bolted to lower control arm. The steering knuckle/spindle assembly is an integral part of strut.
