Condition General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2001-03 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model vehicles, equipped with a 4.3L V6 (RPO L35 – VIN W or RPO LU3 – VIN X) engine. The ignition distributor cap and rotor in these vehicles may corrode and cause ignition system failure. This condition may result in rough engine idle, misfire, stalls, engine cranks but does not run and/or illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). Correction Dealers are to inspect the distributor ignition ventilation holes and, if necessary, replace the distributor cap and rotor, remove the External Ignition Protection (EIP) vent screens and install a foam sleeve around the A/C accumulator line. Vehicles Involved Involved are certain 2001-03 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra model vehicles, equipped with a 4.3L V6 (RPO L35 – VIN W or RPO LU3 – VIN X) engine and built within these VIN breakpoints: Service Procedure 1. Raise the engine hood and inspect the ignition distributor ventilation holes, located in the base of the distributor, to see if the External Ignition Protection (EIP) screens are present. 2. If the EIP vent screens are present: • Remove the vent EIP screens using the procedure listed in Step 3. • Refer to the appropriate procedure in the Engine Controls sub-section of the applicable Service Manual and replace the distributor cap and rotor. 3. Remove the vent screens (1), located in the base of the distributor, by inserting a plastic- handled, long blade awl or pick (2) into each of the two airflow vent holes and popping out the screen. If there are no EIP vent screens in the airflow vent holes, check the vent holes for debris and clear as necessary before reassembling the distributor. 4. If the EIP vent screens are not present, the distributor cap and rotor do not require replacement. 5. Install the foam sleeve, P/N 15190971, around the section of the A/C accumulator line that is routed directly above the distributor. Cut a slit in the sleeve and secure it to the line using tie- straps. Do not install a new foam sleeve if a sleeve is already in place on the A/C accumulator line. 6. 2001-03 CALIFORNIA, 2003 MASSACHUSETTS & MAINE VEHICLES ONLY : Install a Recall Identification Label. Also, for California vehicles, complete a “Proof Of Correction” certificate upon recall completion.

REMOVAL 1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. 2. Disconnect the distributor electrical connector. 3. Remove the two distributor cap screws and the distributor cap, then remove the distributor rotor. Position the distributor cap and spark plug wire set out of the way. 4. Rotate the engine until the number 1 piston is at the Top Dead Center (TDC) position on the compression stroke. 5. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt. 6. Remove the distributor. INSTALLATION NOTE: Before installation check that the number 1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. 1. Match up the alignment marks on the distributor shaft and distributor housing. 2. Apply engine oil to the O-ring on the distributor. 3. Install the distributor while making sure to engage the drive gear into the camshaft distributor drive gear. 4. Make sure the distributor rotor points to the number 1 wire tower. If the distributor rotor is misaligned, pull the distributor out and rotate the distributor shaft to the next tooth. Repeat this step until the distributor rotor is aligned with the number 1 wire tower. 5. Install the distributor rotor, distributor cap and the distributor cap screws. 6. Connect the distributor electrical connector. 7. Temporarily tighten the distributor hold-down bolt. 8. Connect the battery ground cable. 9. Adjust the ignition timing. 10. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 19-25 Nm (14-18 lb ft).

NOTE: There are two procedures available to install the distributor. Use Installation Procedure 1 when the crankshaft has NOT been rotated from the original position. Use Installation Procedure 2 when any of the following components are removed: ^ The intake manifold ^ The cylinder head ^ The camshaft ^ The timing chain or sprockets ^ The complete engine If the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) turns on and DTC P1345 sets after installing the distributor, this indicates an incorrectly installed distributor. Engine damage or distributor damage may occur. Use Procedure 2 in order to install the distributor. 1. Turn OFF the ignition. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove the spark plug wires from the distributor cap ^ Twist each spark plug boot 1/2 turn. ^ Pull only on the wire boot in order to remove the wire from the distributor cap. 2. Remove the electrical connector from the base of the distributor. 3. Remove the two screws that hold the distributor cap to the housing. 4. Discard the screws. 5. Remove the distributor cap from the housing. Use a grease pencil in order to note the position of the rotor in relation to the distributor housing (1). 7. Mark the distributor housing and the intake manifold with a grease pencil. 8. Remove the mounting clamp hold down bolt. 9. Remove the distributor. 10. As the distributor is being removed from the engine, watch the rotor move in a counter-clockwise direction about 42 degrees. This will appear as slightly more than 1 clock position. 11. Note the position of the rotor segment. 12. Place a second mark on the base of the distributor (2). This will aid in achieving proper rotor alignment during the distributor installation. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1

REMOVAL Ignition Rotor Removal And Installation 1. 2. 3. Disconnect negative battery terminal, disconnect distributor lead wire at the wiring harness connector. Release distributor cap retainers and lift the distributor cap off. Scribe a mark on the edge of the distributor housing to indicate the position of the rotor. Use the mark as a reference when reinstalling the distributor. Remove the distributor hold down bolt and clamp, and carefully lift the distributor out of the engine. 4. INSTALLATION 1. Clean the top of the cylinder block to insure a good seal between the distributor base and block. If the engine has not been cranked with distributor removed, proceed with step 2. If the engine has been cranked with the distributor removed proceed to step 3. Position the distributor into the engine. Make sure the O-ring seal is in place on the distributor housing. Align the rotor with the mark previously scribed on the distributor housing. Engage the tongue of the distributor shaft with the slot in the distributor oil pump drive gear. Proceed to step 4. If engine has been cranked with distributor removed perform the following: a. Rotate the crankshaft until number one piston is at the top of its compression stroke. The mark on the crankshaft vibration damper should be in line with the “0″ TDC mark on the timing chain case cover. b. Rotate the distributor rotor until it is positioned pointing at the number one distributor cap terminal. c. Lower the distributor into the engine, making sure the O-ring seal is in place. Engage tongue of distributor shaft with slot in the distributor oil pump drive gear. Install the distributor hold down clamp and screw and tighten finger tight. Install distributor cap and wires, making sure all high tension wires are firmly secured in cap towers. Connect pick-up leads and negative battery cable lead. Set ignition timing, refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for timing adjustment. 2. 3. 4. 5.
