ISSUE Some 2001-2005 Escape vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine may exhibit idle speeds outside the specified range. Some 2001-2003 Escape vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine and CD4E automatic transaxle may exhibit a transmission shudder. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. If the concern is a 2001-2005 Escape with idle speeds outside the specified range: a. Install a new idle air control (IAC) valve with jumper harness included in the kit. The new Denso brand IAC will be installed with the electrical connector facing the opposite direction of the original (Hitachi) valve which is why the jumper harness is required. The original (Hitachi) IAC connector faces the front of the vehicle while the new Denso IAC connector faces toward the rear of the vehicle. b. Referring to the calibration charts (Figures 1 and 2), select the applicable file and reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) using the TSB Service Procedure and WDS/IDS release B40.5 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. 2. If the concern is a 2001 – 2003 Escape with transaxle shudder, drain, flush and refill the transmission fluid with MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid. Then, referring to the calibration charts (Figures 1 and 2), select the applicable file and reprogram the PCM using the TSB Service Procedure and WDS/IDS release B40.5 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. 3. When reprogramming the PCM use blank path programming. Select the proper file from the chart and manually enter the PCM part number or tear tag number to obtain the updated calibration file. If a vehicle has body vibration or steering wheel shimmy while driving, and the root cause is determined to be tire balance, re-balance the tires using a Hunter GSP 9700/9712 balance machine. When using the Hunter GSP 9700/9712, be sure to use the following centering cones and cone/wheel set up listed below. Using the appropriate centering cone ensures that the wheel will be properly centered to the centering cone. Select the appropriate centering cone and use the following setup: ^ 4-stud wheels – use Hunter Cone # )51 ^ 5-stud wheels – use Mazda Required Tool SST # )192-148-2 NOTE : Wheel balance cones have an ID (inside diameter) of 40 mm which will fit most tire balancers.

ISSUE Some 2006 Explorer, Mountaineer and 2007 Explorer Sport Trac vehicles built on or before 8/8/2006 and equipped with a 4.0L engine may experience coolant leaking from the radiator. ACTION Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE 1. Replace the radiator with the updated radiator following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-03. NOTE NOTE: A REVISED FAN STRATEGY IS ALSO AVAILABLE FOR THESE APPLICATIONS 2. Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 58.2 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.11 Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.

Some 2006-2008 Explorer, Mountaineer and 2007-2008 Explorer Sport Trac vehicles equipped with a 6R60 transmission may exhibit a bump feeling while braking to a stop less than 10 MPH (16 Km/h). The following procedure will improve the bump felt while braking to a stop. SERVICE PROCEDURE NOTE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPLACE THE MECHATRONIC UNIT. MECHATRONIC REPAIR / REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED FOR THIS ISSUE. Install Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) / Portable Diagnostic Software (PDS) or equivalent and ID the vehicle. Update the powertrain control module (PCM) and transmission control module (TCM) calibration using IDS release 57.11 and higher or 58.2 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.11 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. Since the TCM cannot be independently reprogrammed, reprogram the Programmable Module Installation (PMI) function to ensure that engine and transmission calibrations are updated to the latest level simultaneously. NOTE a. Verify that the TCM Calibration shows 8L2P-7J104-AC, (8L2P-7J104-CC for builds after 12/3/2007) part number after reprogramming is complete. Select the following from the IDS tool, Toolbox, Powertrain, OBD Test Modes, Mode Level 9 Vehicle Info, TCM Cal Part Number. Clear TCM keep alive memory (KAM) and adaptive tables. a. Using IDS: (1) (2) (3) (4) b. Using PDS: (1) (2) Open Toolbox. Choose Powertrain. Choose Reset KAM. Then Choose TCM. Choose all Tests and Calibrations. Scroll down the menu and Choose Reset TCM KAM.
