Remove 1. Remove auxiliary drive belt. 2. Remove 2 bolts securing alternator to mounting bracket. 3. Release alternator from mounting bracket 4. Remove nuts securing alternator cables, and release cables. 2001 Land Rover Discovery II V8-4.0L 5. Remove alternator from mounting bracket. 6. Remove pulley from alternator. Refit 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Fit alternator pulley and tighten nut to 80 Nm (59 lbf.ft). Position alternator to mounting bracket. Connect alternator cables and tighten B+ nut to 18 Nm (13 lbf.ft), and D+ nut to 5 Nm (3.7 lbf.ft). Locate alternator in mounting bracket. Fit alternator mounting bolts and tighten to 45 Nm (33 lbf.ft). Fit auxiliary drive belt.

WARNING: DISCONNECT NEGATIVE CABLE FROM BATTERY BEFORE REMOVING BATTERY OUTPUT WERE (B+ WIRE) FROM GENERATOR. FAILURE TO DO S0 CAN RESULT IN INJURY OR DAMAGE TO ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. Remove generator drive belt. 3. Left Hand Drive (LHD) Vehicles Only: Remove generator pivot and mounting bolts/nut. Position generator for access to wire connectors. 2000 Jeep Truck Cherokee 2WD L6-4.0L VIN S 4. Right Hand Drive (RHD) Vehicles Only:Remove upper nut (generator adjustment nut) and both belt adjustment bolts. Remove generator lower nut/bolt. Position generator for access to wire connectors. 5. If equipped, unsnap plastic cover from B+ terminal. 6. Remove B+ terminal mounting nut at rear of generator.Disconnect terminal from generator. 7. Disconnect field wire connector at rear of generator by pushing on connector tab. 8. Remove generator from vehicle. INSTALLATION 1. Position generator to engine and snap field wire connector into rear of generator. 2. Install B+ terminal to generator mounting stud. Tighten mounting nut to 8.5 Nm (75 in. lbs.) torque. 3. If equipped, snap plastic cover to B+ terminal. 4. LHD Vehicles: Install generator fasteners and tighten as follows: – Generator upper mounting bolt-55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) torque. – Generator lower pivot bolt/nut-55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.) torque. CAUTION: – Never force a belt over a pulley rim using a screwdriver. The synthetic fiber of the belt can be damaged. – When installing a serpentine accessory drive belt, the belt MUST be routed correctly. The water pump will be rotating in the wrong direction if the belt is installed incorrectly, causing the engine to overheat. Refer to belt routing label in engine compartment.

Removing and Installing Generator Removal 1. Disconnect the battery and cover terminal or battery. Undo the fastening screw for the air cleaner housing and the hose clamp on the throttle body. 2. Disconnect the electrical plug connection on the air flow sensor and remove the complete air cleaner assembly. 3. Relieve the drive belt at the tensioning pulley and remove the belt. 4. Disconnect the electrical plug connection on the vacuum switchover valve and unclip the switchover valve from the holder. 5. Undo the holder at the intake distributor (2 screws) and remove. Pay attention to the sealing ring (vacuum line for brake booster) when removing. 6. Undo left fastening screw (in direction of travel) and unscrew. 7. Undo right fastening screw (with deflection roller) by three turns. A gentle tap on the fastening screw loosens the threaded bushing in the generator arm (use aluminium mandrel). Unscrew fastening screw and remove with deflection roller. 8. The generator must be turned clockwise so that the swivel arm is near the crankcase and the holding arm projects beyond the fastening eye. 9. Carefully pull the generator back a little and undo the electrical connections, or press the plug connection to the generator housing, release (arrow A) and pull off. Pull out generator to the rear. Installation Tightening torques: Hexagon nut a/f24 Hexagon-head bolts M10 Hexagon nut a/f13 NOTE : When carrying out installation, make sure that the sealing ring for the vacuum brake booster is replaced and carefully fitted. Undoing and tightening the belt pulley M16×1.5 65 ±5 Nm (48 ±3.5 ftlb.) M8 45 Nm (33 ftlb.) 15 Nm (11.0 ftlb.)

REMOVAL 1. Open Hood. 2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 3. Raise vehicle and support. 4. Remove the accessory drive belt splash shield. 5. Loosen the accessory drive belt refer to the cooling. 6. Remove the lower mounting bolt. 7. Lower the vehicle. Fig.5 Generator Battery Cable 8. Remove the battery cable and field connection (Fig. 5). 9. Disconnect the electrical connector to the A/C pressure switch and A/C clutch. 10. Remove the engine oil dip stick. 11. Remove the 2 upper mounting bolts. 12. Remove the generator (Fig. 6). INSTALLATION 1. Install generator (Fig. 6). 2. Install the 2 upper bolts but do not tighten. 3. Install the engine dip stick tube. 4. Connect the A/C pressure switch and A/C clutch electrical connectors. 5. Connect the battery cable and field connectors (Fig. 5). 6. Raise vehicle and support. 7. Install the lower bolt and tighten. 8. Install the accessory drive belt, refer to the cooling. 9. Install the accessory drive splash shield. 10. Lower the vehicle. 11. Tighten the 2 upper mounting bolts to 12. Connect the negative battery cable.

Switch off ignition. Follow instructions for disconnecting and connecting battery. See: Battery/Service and Repair Disconnect and cover battery negative lead. WARNING: Danger of scalding! Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down. Remove alternator drive belt. Remove fan cowl. Drain coolant. Release bolts (1) on alternator. Release nut (1). Disconnect battery positive lead (2) from alternator. Disconnect plug (3). Release screw (4) and remove roller. Release screws (5) on alternator. Recycling A residual quantity of coolant emerges when the alternator is removed from the housing. Catch and dispose of escaping coolant. Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.
